Hello there, /jp/. I am sure you are already barfing with the "is rosetta stone gut" "how do i japanese lololol" threads, but bear with me, I just want to know one thing.

I started learning Japanese in a language school a month ago, so far we have covered the whole hiragana and working on katakana now. I'd like to know how do you learn all the kanji - the stroke order, their meaning etc. Hiragana and Katakana are pretty straightforward, but what is your method of learning 1945+ freaking kanjis? Is there any easy modo to go with? Or do you just have to learn all of them by heart by reading and rewriting them every day as if you were on crack? When I look at some more complex ones, I have problems picturing that.

Pic semi-related.

Disregard that, use Heisig.

If you're in school, just wait patiently and learn as they teach you. Otherwise what is the point?

Well sure, use Heisig.

But not if you want to learn Japanese.

Don't learn kanji out of context. Learn words and the characters used to write those words. And only the readings used in those words you know.

I'm using these. Kanjidicks for mindless memorization, and learning specific words from texts I'm trying to read.

I just feel a little over-ambitious, I hate when I want to read something - a site, name of a youtube video, even something on /jp/, and I can't because I don't know how to even read a kanji that is used. I just wish they used furigana above every single kanji (though now that we only have kana and kanji on our excercise sheets in the school, all the kanji has furigana, making me quite content). I'm doing quite well with learning what we are doing right now, and I wanted to take a step-up.

Use rikaichan. Try not to rely on it more than necessary though.
