I have not read Yureaka but Mekuiro is very similar to Aokana, both feature a fictional sport involving 1 vs 1 duels (2 vs 2 in Mekuiro sequel/fandisc). Mekuiro is also nowhere near as padded out as Aokana.

I've finished Elise's and Sakuya's routes. It was quite fun and unbearably cute but it was essentially a character-based moege in those two routes.
I think there were some minor hints of something more serious lurking behind the main heroine but I kind of got satisfied by two heroines I liked the best and never got around to continue reading. I guess I'll pick it up again one of these days as I've improved my reading speed quite considerably from back then.
It's a quite long game, if I remember correctly.

Would be nice if someone with more knowledge could look into porting crack from the original binary to the 1.02 version. Actual game binary is hatsukoi.bin. hatsukoi.exe originally is just some sort of launcher that checks CD and communicates status to the main binary somehow.

Shapeshifter. The actual plot line was surprisingly pretty well put together and had some cool action. The final boss fight was great. I didn't really like that whole setting with japanese mythological worlds as it was indeed very poorly explored and felt like a low-effort filler to make up some basis for the rest of the routes while barely being relevant to the true route. i'm still learning japanese but i've reached a pretty decent level in terms of comprehension, but there is a small issue.
even if i know all the kanji and the grammar of a sentence, it still takes a while to remember all the pronounciations, so i can't get it "flowing", and because of that i keep missing the point unless i re-read it a couple of times.
on the other hand, if i read the english-translated sentence first, then i instantly associate kanji-pronounciation-meaning of the japanese one. i'm pretty sure most of you also had the same experience

my question is, is it "better" to try-hard the japanese sentence (which makes it feel like you are studying and not reading something you enjoy) or to read the translation first and then the japanese sentence?
i'm pretty sure that the brain will make the associations regardless, i just wanted to hear your opinion

I just finished up Shapeshifter. I guess overall it was decent. The game has the structure like Owarinaki where there's a long common route that is the bulk of the game and then at the end it branches off to each heroine's chapter to end it. The common route is reasonably fun. The heroines (minus one) are all from different universes and the MC has a power that lets him turn into a weapon for each of them. That's the main gimmick, and the corresponding battle scenes are cool. The main plot is put together well enough, and I'd say it's a solid scifi/fantasy story. The writing has a bunch of personal pet peeves of mine like overuse of flashbacks and what not, but nothing that killed it for me.

The real problems start when the game branches off to each heroine's scenario. There's a pretty big disconnect between the common route and the heroine route. Basically, MC regresses to a ヘタレ for no real reason despite the events that occur at the climax of the common route. The one exception I thought this was OK was in アーエス since unlike everyone else, she was an antagonist for most of the story. It made sense why MC wouldn't immediately love her since they barely spent any time together at that point. That said, the individual heroine are mostly okay if you mentally ignore the character regression. イルダーナ's route is mostly just silly fun. アレサ's has kind of has a bullshit plot device for contrived drama. Also the way アレサ acts in her route might really test the patience of some people (didn't bother me too much but she gets really cuntish). Overall, it was OK I guess. Minus MC being a faggot at the beginning, ナーティア's route is pretty good. It didn't rely on bad drama, but actually had a proper plot to it. 耀子's route is unfortunately just shit. This was the first one I read which had me kind of worried about the other heroines, but luckily only 耀子's route was this bad. This one was all just completely contrived drama to the point where it was annoying, and everyone was acting retarded. It was just not good. On the other hand, アーエス's route was unexpectedly actually great. Like I said before, this was the one scenario where it made sense for MC to not instantly fuck her since アーエス's role in the story is way different than the other heroines. Her route had one pretty good twist in it that I didn't see coming, and it also showed off a potential negative aspect of MC's power which I appreciated. Overall, this one was easily the best heroine route.

I guess the tl;dr of this is that the common route is fun (albeit certainly not anything special or amazing; just enjoyable). The individual heroine routes are a mixed bag.

I am on the edge about it after reading it, since the first 2/3 of the game focuses a lot on the city and its people, the idealistic and realistic solutions to ghosts living amongst humans. The philosophy of life and death, regret and resolution. During this part the heroine is there merely as an emotional support and someone to ichaicha with relentlessly. I have to say honestly, I was not crazy about this part up until its resolution part, which was pretty good albeit plotholey. Especially Sakiha's character was extremely annoying to me during it.
But Shiro's "arc" was a lot more engaging, straightforward, and bold storytelling. I felt satisfied during the conclusion, yet irritated at the same time. It seems this new entry is a what if, which completely scrapes the resolution for Shiro, who has been MC's partner, lover, and lifelong companion. -Kanoseka: While I didn't drop it within an hour due to awful mood whiplash and questionable science that akikuru had, I still couldn't really get into the game. I guess I just don't like its theme, and the twintail reminds me too much of koikari. Also Harukuru is still the only game by this writer, where the comedy worked for me. Not sure if something changed, or it's just Aoba Ringo that made it work.

-Sugar Style. Only read Mao's route. The comedy works for me and it was quite a fun game, but Mao's "kobetsu" was a disappointment. Reminded me of the green haired girl in Making Lovers, where the character changes too much and it gets kinda boring. In the date before that second arc of hers starts, the protagonist even repeatedly refers to how Mao isn't behaving like herself. It never really ends.
If anyone has a route recommendation here I'm all ears. The heroines left worked for the comedy, but I don't think they are very interesting as heroines.


And currently I'm playing Monkeys. Maybe not for long though. The only ohoho ojou I ever liked, I liked because of Luna in tsuriotsu (aka she wasn't really an ohoho ojou), and I think androgynous girls that take the role of guys are disgusting as fuck. I've always loved pure romance. It is something unobtainable with 3DPD - the ideal that you yearn for. But the more pure and perfect something is, the more I get the desire to see it defiled.
