Vinyl bjd dolls were until very recently only made by Japanese companies and were licensed for a lot of anime properties. Resin are made all over and aren't in any way Japanese centric. That and the /toy/ thread like a few other places used to not consider vinyl to be bjd at all.

Is there anything interesting happening in the BJD space?
The Angel Philia Line seems to be gaining massive popularity, and I'm assuming it's male focussed as the dolls are all pretty lewd. (Though, in my experience a lot of women also like lewd dolls apparently).
Is VOLKS doing anything interesting, or just milking their DD-f3 bodies and crossovers until people stop buying?
I am also on the lookout for high quality school uniforms for DD/DDS, i have found a lot already but only at official stores like VOLKS themselves and the cursed Smart Doll store. Most Etsy shops I've come across are just focussing on casual (western) wear.

Yes, quite a bit is going on, but the last two years have slowed down an already slow paced hobby and the weeks between Christmas and the week after new years always stops everything for a bit. The Volks 50th anniversary project has been announced, and while specifics haven't been laid out, it's suggested that they'll be something for the SD/DD side of the business coming very soon, but it's just conjecture for now. There have been a lot of new 1/4 head sculpts released and for once not hidden behind doll point exclusivity. It seems Volks if finally realizing they have a global audience outside of Japan with the advent of GL memberships and exclusives. The F3 bodies are only 3 years old, they're not going anywhere anytime soon.
For the school uniforms, FreedomTeller.net has some, they're ultra high quality and as a result in high demand and low supply, follow them on social media for restocks. You can also check dollremi.store, they have a lot, but they're more cosplay orientated so they'll be mostly themed after anime school uniforms.

AP's are as beloved as they are divisive, but genuinely a lot of women seem to like them. I've heard they pose wonderfully, and I've been interested in getting one at some point.

Things have been slow in the last few years, but the global situation has a lot to do with that (especially on the resin side, I believe one of the chief resin manufacturers- or else a company involved in the production of resin- burned down not too long ago, which has further caused problems in that realm for a ton of different industries and hobbyists alike.)
Beyond that, I do know DD Kaito has been announced (which is exciting for both Vocaloid fans and anyone wanting a male body.) A lot of people have been really excited for TinyFox's anime dolls recently as well from what I've heard. Lots of little developments and a few larger ones on the horizon, it's a good time to be in the hobby.

FreedomTeller has the quality I'd like, unfortunate for the low stock but more unfortunate is the limited range (only one uniform for DD, the others are SD16 which probably don't fit too well).
Maybe I'll get some experience under my belt and start a uniform focussed tailoring or something. There's just so much actual uniforms already out there, enough material for new designs for years.
The other 2 stores mentioned have nice outfits but are lacking when it comes to detailing/material usage. picrel probably can't be achieved without asking money people won't spend on it normally.

All high schools in Japan have unique uniforms, normally these are pretty standard stuff, sailor outfits etc.
But for private schools, the uniform actually is an important identifier and status symbol, therefore a lot of money goes into having a recognizable and good design. Often these uniforms are very expensive and intricate, nearing the level of designer clothes.
Some students even choose a school based on a specific uniform.
attached pic is from a second-hand website, and trust me this isn't for dweebs to jerk off to the smell, they're washed etc.

also, yes, one of them is listed for the equivalent of 2000$, which is probably cheaper than new.
TL;DR lotta uniforms, all with various cute designs and often very high quality.

Thanks, anon- I know Japan's school culture is kind of nuts about things, randoseru also cost a small fortune (but then, they're supposed to last for a kid's entire school career.) I did some time at a school with a uniform -- I can't imagine having to pay the cost of one of these uniforms, even if they are far nicer, especially on top of tuition fees and whatnot. But then, I suppose that's what makes them such a desirable luxury.

Yeah, FreedomTeller is one of the higher in terms of quality, you can also look up Ginger Tea on Booth. Their work is high quality and detail too, but it's all small batch one of a kind stuff. There's actually older Ginger Tea uniform sets up on mandarake from time to time.

You can find them on Yahoo Japan auctions from time to time, but if you use a shopping service and search for them (I use FromJapan, they've been great) they'll come up considerably cheaper than on auction sites. There's also a licensed line of erasers that look realistic and have swappable lenses.

Some Azone girls actually have removeable eyes (the Iris Collect girls, I think?) I'm sure it'd be fine to get them wet as long you're careful about drying them and don't rub them strongly or whatever. Be careful to dry the frame as well as the inside of the body if you submerge them in water or anything -- that said, it can be done.

To the anon in last thread that said they used vintage clothes: I also do that, and best source is the Goodwill Outlet (aka The Bins). Pay by pound for fabric goods, chock full of mildly damaged high end clothes (at least in my local store). I’ve gotten so much silk, fine cotton and linen, good lace and buttons, and even an antique dress that isn’t worth much but is full of nice details to piece out for fancy doll gowns.

Lurking this thread is enough to qualify someone in my opinion. Even if someone doesn't have a doll (yet), appreciating them makes them part of the hobby.

I miss traveling and taking photos of my dolls. I hope that one day I can get back into the swing of it. I also do other toy photography (pic related) and nature photography, and outside of that I play video games and cook. Trying to get back into reading, I stopped for a long time due to not having the time or energy, but being trapped indoors has alleviated that problem. I spend a lot of time innawoods during the warm months as well, but right now is a bad time of year for it.

thanks! yea, i was familiar with her character, but i hadn't watched the whole series when she came out as a dds. i fell in love with the head sculpt. it's easily one of my absolute favorites, if not the favorite. i had wanted her for a long time and finally got her about a year and a half ago on a post divorce impulse buy. as with all of my other girls, she definitely helped distract me thru that tough time.

There’s VolksUSA (or their international site), Parabox, Azone, Obitsu (those three have mostly interchangeable parts as they’re made by same base company), Angelphilia (also same base company but more unique parts and skin tones), Tinyfox, and then some resin doll companies like Dollzone amd Aimerai do anime style dolls too.

Reallly depends on your own eye and how much imperfections etc you (want to) see, I'm cursed with a sharp eye which ends up costing a lot more, but if you don't see what might be imperfections it doesn't really matter. It's not like the clothes will break easier or look different compared to the pictures. I'd rather be in your situation than in mine to be honest.

Does anyone have a character doll (ala DDS Hatsune Miku) and find that you don't do much with them? I really like Miku, but she mostly just sits around in her outfit... it would feel weird to do anything else with her, but then, that gets boring.

I kinda feel like this is a trap a lot of people run into with the licensed dolls in particular. It's cool to have one of the character dolls that you love, but you get too used to the doll being the character, you don't really make her your own. Do you know what I mean? She's Hatsune Miku, but she's YOUR Hatsune Miku. Part of the fun with dolls is being silly and weird with posing them or dressing them up. Some of the more fun posters around here and other forums have changed a Miku's eyes or styled her outside of her norm to make them really fun.
If you're more concerned about feeling weird for playing with dolls, you just have to take yourself less seriously and have fun. Take some weird pictures, take some artsy ones. Go to the dollar store, buy a bag of plastic dinosaurs and take a series of photos of her dealing with them like they're pests invading her space so she's fighting them off with whatever is around and close to being a weapon for her (pencils, paint brushes, a wooden spoon). Dolls can make a great creative outlet and I've personally learned a few new skills because I let myself get into the hobby but it's very much about putting in to get things back out.
But if you're still weird about it, that's OK too. There are plenty of collectors in this hobby who get the dolls, dress them in their defaults and pose them once and put them on display and only touch them to clean them. There's nothing wrong with that. These are well crafted art/collectors pieces too on top of being fun dolls.

It's snowing again. Going to try and take some photos in the snow tomorrow now that my new gloves are here. I recommend fly-fishing gloves to everyone regardless of what they do outside in the winter, the ability to take off the fingertips is a lifesaver working in the cold.

and yeah I was going to guess AP torso as well, but the AP colors don't match Volks very well

The leg is popped out of the joint. It looks good at a glance, but the more you look at her hips/pelvis the more the proportions and arrangement look unnatural. This is a common trick to get poses that wouldn't otherwise be possible.

Ah, Obitsu heads are like that. Some heat will make it easier to get them out, and then you can arrange them how you see fit -- or even trim away the sockets with an x-acto knife if they inconvenience you. (Obviously when modding the face, heat the vinyl and go very slowly and carefully to avoid accidents.)
