Sometimes your teacher will have a reading list in class materials.
Find those books, look at who and what they reference.

I'll help out with a piece of information that you won't find in books. Use it if you want to impress your prof.

The word Shintou is written with two kanjis: Shin (真 - TRUE) and Tou (東 - EAST). This is because around the 12th century the two religions what we now call Shintou and Nisetou used to be one. By the way, nise (偽) means fake. The Nise priests used to worship demons and they were cast out of Japan. The religion was reformed and was renamed to Shintou - the "true" religion, without the demons part.

Now, what's more interesting is what became of the so-called "fake" priests. They spread out around the world and founded several organizations like the Church of Satan (Heard of Anton LaVey? Yeah? And his advisor and high priest? Japanese. Niseist priest.) or the Illuminati. Of course, these are now full of Western people, but the guys hidden behind the curtain are all part of this almost a thousand years old Japanese bloodline. They are everywhere, they have power, and they are crazy as fuck. Things might start getting interesting in the world very soon...
