I think it's more they just flat out stopped making them. It's almost the same games as it was 10 years ago, WoW, Guild Wars, Mabinogi. XIV 2.0's almost 10 years old now, too. You don't see a lot of high-budget new "traditional" MMOs anymore, let alone the anime-style ones. Weird to think, since it felt like new ones were coming out basically every year back in the day. I think the mobage and phone-game markets slowly kind of overtook them, because they're more lucrative these days with less production cost.

There's still some ones floating around though. Uncharted Waters just got a big update a few days ago for the five people that still play it.

The characters are cute and enjoyable and the lore is good so it doesn't feel as much of a waste of time than it would with any singleplayer RPG. There's also little difference between this game and other MMOs I've played where most players don't give a shit about interacting anyway unless they're trying to steal your drops or kills.

Mabinogi was the best mmo for me and nothing ever came close to scratching that itch. I dropped every other mmo after a week or two because I just liked Mabinogi more. Even the rough artstyle was part of the charm for me, I hate the abuse of the word "comfy", but it was indeed comfy to me.

Sadly I don't like the current state of the game at all.

Does /jp/ play xiv? I was considering playing on jp servers away from western drama and nonsense but it feels even more lonelier than playing solo on NA or EU. Latency isn't really that bad if you use a vpn no matter where you are from. Sometimes I do bump into english speakers but they are mainly solo players or aussies playing where latency is best for them

The game can be a bit laggy when you're entering a new area or in the cities but if you're experiencing lag in other areas or a lot of lag in general, it might be an issue on your end or a technical issue since atomix is glitchy sometimes. Not to keep derailing the thread, but do you have any advice for starting out? I picked a faction, and did the few quests from the inn, but I think there's a limit on how many you can do within a certain time. Quests from the Inn and Cafe employees have a limit of 5 per day or 3 if your character was already made. If you're level 20 you can start doing the Catty quests since quests from NPCs don't count towards the limit. https://atomix-eco.fandom.com/wiki/Catty_(Momo) Also if you haven't already, you should talk to Elina in front of the Black Church and get a free marionette from her and then check out the portal behind Tonka since there's a lot of shops and crafting areas there.

You don't need to be social in a MMO. Permanently /busy and hide chat and no more drama. You miss comms but it's not too important usually. It's probably more lonelier because of timezones.

>>37748783
It's also impossible to make friends on either game now. When I started Mabi, a couple people added me and chit chatted and wanted to help me out since I was a noob, but we rarely talked and I'm pretty sure they wanted me to reward them with the newcomer heart things. For FF14 it was horndogs lusting for my character, or begging me to join their guild to become a statistic for their member count.

It's not like I HAVE to, it's just that I generally have a good time when /jp/ hosts servers for games and people gather to play and chat and since I am already invested this much in this game I was wondering if people here secretly already played it. Since everyone here avoids western servers I figured out some of you were hiding on one of the three jp datacenters. I promised myself I would never go through the main story again but knowing there are people from here playing might give me the motivation I need. Also in-game gathering around the kotatsu are just nice

i'm pretty late getting into it, the first netoge i played is Phantasy Star Online 2 JP right after episode 3 was released. I do like the game, the classes are fun to play with, there are a lot of contents to play around and their monetization system is great for players that don't want to spend a single penny. but it doesn't feel like an MMO somehow, except for the occasional emergency quests most of the time i spent on the game dungeons are spent alone. it felt like a single player game with internet integration and a hub world. i stopped when they released new genesis, my pc can't handle it.
i've never really got into other netoge, i played Ragnarok for a bit and i can't get into it, FFXIV is great but i can't afford the subscription, there seems to be a lot of old games that are still "active" to this day, i really want to play them since they looks so comfy but alas, i'm running linux now and most of these netoge are running their own launcher with their own weird anti cheat system. i think I'll setup a dual boot soon, uncharted waters and mabinogi looks interesting, cheers.

I'm still disappointed nobody ever made that /jp/ EVE corp suggestion from years ago. But maybe it was for the best, I think the only people still around are jaded old vets and the megacorps too invested in it to quit.

PSO2 is more like a dungeon-crawler with an MMO hubworld rather than an MMO in the truest sense. I think it has an official translation now doesn't it? Sorry to ask, but since you're about the only person who can probably answer it; is the Warlock quest for non-Dominion races bugged? The wiki mentions you shouldn't need anything to cross to the undead isle if you're a Novice, but there's no dialogue options or anything. It says you can use Crest Paper, but the only things that drop that are level 40 enemies which are impossible for a novice to kill. I had so much fun when more games existed. I can't stand XIV it's a walking simulator at best and not a very appealing one.
How do I say this. the games we're left with today have no soul.
I tried maplestory out a few years ago and it feels different. Megaten Imagine didn't have enough players. Quite a few games had a dwindling playerbase that led to western server shutdowns.
It's all about the graphics and money now.

Given Tree of Savior exists, I don't believe any MMO had a reason to shut down because of players. When they were invented they weren't even meant to hold a few thousand players anyway, WoW just blew up and some people chased that dream. I think ones that shut down either just stopped hitting some profit goal or the people just quit because who wants to work on a single game their whole life, especially as a GM? I doubt the western teams for MMORPGs are that large. It's probably for the best MMOs are mostly dead though. After WoW clones they started trying to be hardecore tru-oldfag PVP experiences which basically no one likes except griefers. If they were popular nowadays they'd all be open world Souls-likes with a bit of Monster Hunter.

The one thing I regret was that MMORPGs were never ballsy enough to be like mobile games and their lewd beyond belief style of outfits. All the ones that tried to be "adult" were trash looking and probably playing and still wussed out.

Good story and music (arguably) and challenging enough end-game for people who are into that. Also a lot of side content that's basically what the average mmo player does the most. It was salvaged from a fine mess from 1.0 launch so it doesn't really look like your average hd korean mmo

Last time I had fun in an MMO was Maplestory 2.

Not to keep harping on about "back in the day", but I think part of the reason for this is Discord. Everybody talks on it now, so there's little reason to chat in-game. I think it also makes people wear out of each other faster, because you're around them 24/7. Before if didn't log in, or stopped logging in entirely, that was pretty much it.

Of course it seems like people as a whole are different. I vividly remember even in games like WoW people'd just randomly come up to you and try to strike up some silly conversation or ask you questions/help you out if you seemed new. That kind of stuff is a rarity more than the norm these days, and people just kind of silently go about whatever grind or dailies they have.

I don't know talking to people on AIM/Skype/Steam never stopped me or them from chatting on MMOs. I think MMOs are just dominated by people that don't want to talk. I mean how often did you just go talking to random people outside your friend group/guild for anything more than superficial reasons? (in this sense meaning for the duration of a dungeon run or to ask a question as you mentioned). It's not weird at all that people don't like talking to random people they don't know and this is true in real life as well.
