Am I the only one who feels really dejected and disappointed by most touhou extra bosses?
They used to be cool, they used to be imposing and horrifying. Now it's just "hmm I still need an extra stage boss for this game... what'll it be? oh I've got it, it's literally just drums!"
Where's the horror? Where's the suspense? Here's my objective ranking of touhou's extra bosses:

>EoSD
An immortal, blood hungry manic vampire. Now that's bone chillingly awesome.
In combination with 'U.N. Owen was her?', Flandre is the perfect example of a late victorian nightmare.
You can feel that this isn't an ordinary battle with a youkai, you're literally fighting for Reimu's life in that hellish extra stage.

Yukari. Or as I like to call her: man devouring serpant. She is imposing and powerful, maybe even on the level of the gods.
Not only is her theme song 'Necrofantasia' unrivaled in its intensity and sheer pressure, Yukari herself emits enough of an unholy aura that her battle would make even the most hardened shmup players sweat buckets without any music.

She's kinda alright, but kinda bland in comparison to the previous extra bosses too. I guess she's a phoenix, but her human design really doesn't make that clear at all.

That's kind of the point of her character. She's not meant to be loud and threatening, she's supposed to be just out of sight that you don't even know she exists. Plus the concept of literally erasing your presence is a cool concept thats' explored in fanon a little bit. Plus there's at least a demand for her considering she's appeared in AOCF and such. I think you've just been wearing rose-tinted glasses for a bit too long and consider EOSD and PCB to be these golden calves that can't be improved upon.

I just revisited that part and I may have been somewhat in the wrong, but it doesn't change the fact that Flandre is based on victorian eldritch horror and can easily decapitate a human. In pic related for example Flandre acknowledges the possibility of Marisa dying in their fight.
Regardless of that though, she is a vampire and canonically drinks blood.

Any of the lesser youkais can decapitate a human easily and a lot of the youkai originated from horror Japanese folk lores too. You think kappas are cute? They pulled humans into water, drowning them to dig into their ass and take their 'shirikodama'. Remilia also have a contract with Gensokyo's youkais where they(probably Yukari) will supply her with human as food source provided that she won't attack the humans in Gensokyo. Look up Vampire Incident for reference.

The highlights are how they're not only immortal, but are stupidly hard to kill and their strength and speed are just among the best among Gensokyo youkais. If that isnt bad enough, Remilia has the power to manipulate fate, although no one knows to what extends and if its done consciously while Flandre is single target Thanos. And then you have the other residents in her house who are also strong.

Too much Flandre in this thread, so I'll start with Mamizou, whom OP said as just a Tanuki. Remember that Nue summoned her for the sole purpose of defeating Miko and is Myouren Temple's trump card, so she is at worst stronger than Byakuren.

I never implied that Stages is what indicates a 2hu's strength though, but during the religion war in WaaH Byakuren was Buddhist's representative to fight Reimu, and Kasen put her bet on Byakuren, so she should be strong at some point.

Well the previous poster does have a point about Stages not indicating strength though. Seija is a stage 5 yet Reimu and Sakuya both called her weak after her fight. Mamizou though, have few indications where she is shown as a string youkai, like how Reimu asked her to take down a possessed Kosuzu instead of waking up the sleeping Marisa.
