Why do people hate fumos again? I feel like I'm out of the loop on some insider gatekeeping. My gripe with them is how a piece of cotton costs 300 dollars.

I'd love to gatekeep fumos, but teens are immune to bullying these days and can't integrate.
To answer why people hate them: They became a mainstream meme in the west, and therefore have attracted an undesirable crowd of teenagers laughing at "the funny anime plushies" without knowing anything about it. It really is quite grating having to deal with the influx of non-Touhou fans posting about fumos and attempting to worm their way into a community they do not belong in, but my solution is to just stay out of the Touhou corners of mainstream media or just avoid those platforms altogether.

They don't originally cost that much, they normally go for around 40 USD but scalpers resell them for much higher (which is entirely the fault of Gift's shitty business model, and everyone hates them for it).

I guess I can understand from that perspective now. It reminds me of a time when Westerners kept repeating Jojo memes without watching the show or having any reference of it outside of the memes. I'd personally love to own a Junko or Okuu fumo myself but I'm not exactly fluid atm.
