Same. I'll even go so far and say that Meakashi was my favorite Higurashi chapter, and Shion my favorite protagonist of all time. There's something unnerving yet at the same time oddly appealing about Meakashi's grim atmosphere.
You can pinpoint the exact moment when things turn to shit and lifes are at stake, but Shion remains calm and collected throughout all of it, creating a soothing relaxation for the reader in this hectic chapter.
While Keiichi's previous outbursts were always accompanied by crazy reasoning and an obvious lack of self reflection, Shion does what she has to in order to get to the bottom of Hinamizawa's conspiracy with an iron determination. She's relatable, yet at the same time an incredibly sad and pitiable figure as it becomes increasingly obvious that her deductions may have led her to a wrong target.
Meakashi isn't a comedy, and it is by no means a horror story either. It's a tragedy in the truest sense of the word, about a lonely misguided girl doing bad things in the name of justice.

This is exactly the reason why Shion is higurashi's best protagonist and villain at once. Comparing her to Satoko makes this distinction really noticable.
While both Shion and Satoko act with the impression of having been betrayed by their loved one(s), Shion is really the only one whose betrayal we actually get to see and "feel" alongside her. That torture scene, the absolute dread in Shion's voice at being deceived by her own sister, truly hurt. You never feel as if Shion goes too far as long as her revenge spree is directed at her family and the fellow village elders due to that moment of despair.
Satoko on the other hand neither arouses sympathy nor is she relatable at all despite being just as much of a protagonist as Shion. Her reason for revenge is weak, and her way of handling Rika is inconsequential at best. She never specifies her motivations or specific goals before the finale, but once she does she immediately gives up on her entire plan and loses all of the determination she previously seemed to encompass.
There's no love in her villainous self, unlike Shion who never conpletely managed to lose herself to her inner demons.

For my money, Tatarigoroshi is the strongest arc of Higurashi in atmosphere, writing, and general design; when the mystery was at its most compelling and all the school-age characters shone brightest.
Takano's pre-Hinamizawa arc comes close, but for the most part it's all downhill after Tatarigoroshi.

Keiichi has his thing in Tatari claiming that he will "become" the curse where Oyashiro failed, and Rena has all of her Oyashiro schizo visions. And for a while in Meakashi Shion does look down on the others and treat them as playthings.
But in her moments of clarity it feels like Shion sees herself as separate from HS(the demon) where the others kind of embrace it in their L5 minds. When she spares K1's life in the dungeon she warns him that she won't be able to control herself later on, acknowledging that something else has a hold on her.

It's a really interesting way for an HS victim to act, and I think it's because Shion tackled the village curse mysteries in a different way and because she's a Sonozaki that knows more than the others would.

I didn't find that Satoko's feelings of being betrayed compared to Shion's. Satoko was angry at one person and hurt so many other people on purpose, Shion was angry at a whole group of those she felt betrayed by and focused on them until her HS got worse and she kinda lashed out at others (mainly K1, who didn't do anything wrong himself).
Also Satoko wasn't L5 which takes away a lot of my understanding for a Higu character going on a murder spree. The loops changing a human's mind wasn't shown well in Satoko's case which could've helped.

That doesn't really sound like the Meakashi I read.
Early on, she flips out and tries to murder a ten-year old for crying, and only comes to her senses when the object of her affection manhandles her.
In the second half, she goes out of her way to desecrate Oryou's dead body, just for the hell of it, flips out at Rika, who ends up validating her delusions for all the wrong reasons, and tortures Satoko just to satisfy her personal desire for revenge, rather than anything to do with stopping the "curse".
It's only Satoko's defiance and Shion realizing that she did the exact opposite of what Satoshi wanted from her that led to Shion showing any real self-reflection, but even that only lasted a moment until she embraced the "demon" entirely and just flailed around wildly around her in the hopes that somebody would kill her.

Meakashi is filled with crazy outbursts from Shion in-between her trying to "calmly" scheme her way through a situation she created entirely by herself, which isn't that different from Rena in Tsumi, I feel, and Keiichi was also still capable of self-reflection in his descent into madness during Tatarigoroshi.

I wouldn't call Shion "calm and collected", maybe in certain portions of Meakashi like in her early searches for the curse, or giving everyone the runaround while acting as Mion and using Oryou's name to order people around.
Most of it is her struggling with a lot of conflicting feelings and eventually her HS taking more of a hold and convincing her she's doing the right thing to get to the bottom of the curse and Satoshi's disappearance.
Satoko's death snaps her out of it for a little while and she loses faith in what she's doing, basically letting the "demon" take hold. Mion telling her that she and Oryou didn't actually know anything only pushes her down this path more.

That sobering hit to the back of the head at the end of the chapter did work wonders, though.

What I liked a lot about Meakashi, is how successful Shion was. She kills every person she wants to kill and she ruins the emergency plan, without even knowing about it. Her only mistakes are not properly slashing K1 and not being careful, but even those add up to the mystery she leaves behind. As much as a tragedy Meakashi is, I really have to admire her overall "success".

She didn't really want to kill half of those people, though. Killing Satoko fucked her up hard, she only killed Mion to perform the final swap, and that was right after learning that her revenge plot was completely pointless, and she doesn't even succeed in killing Keiichi. And that's not even considering how post-Satoko she really just wanted Keiichi/Rena to figure her out and put a stop to her plans.
Shion just blunders her way through the story, and only got as far as she did because she had ridiculously powerful assets in how she could pretend to be Mion, who wields immense amounts of trust within the village, and had the secrecy of the Sonozaki estate and the basement to hide her crimes.
As much as she envisions herself as some sort of mastermind going up against the entire village, she wasn't actually matching wits with anyone, as there wasn't an actual curse. She gets Kimiyoshi to visit her by asking him nicely (since he has no reason to distrust Mion), Rika only comes because of looper shit, Satoko likewise just trusts Mion, and while Keiichi and Rena do actually sniff her out, they were never part of her original goals at all. She doesn't even really outwit them, since their deal was just trusting "Mion" despite admitting to all those murders. Keiichi's unending trust in Mion is even what leads Shion to change her plans again, even if only for a little while.
Nothing Shion set out to accomplish actually went the way she wanted it to. She only "succeeded" in spite of her immense incompetence, and in the end, none of it matters since she just regretted all of her actions.
Meakashi is great, but it's in large part because Shion was a fuck-up from start to finish, and while her internal logic makes perfect sense when you look at things from her perspective, it's painfully obvious that Shion accomplished nothing other than creating her own hell.

She has these assets at her disposal, mainly her ability to mimic Mion's personality and uses Mion's power fairly well to deceive people.

I think it's fair to consider Shion to be pretty incompetent when her only real accomplishments are overpowering an eleven-year old meeper and tazing a bunch of old people who weren't expecting anything. She managed to throw the village council into a frenzy, sure, but what was she even hoping to accomplish with that? She wanted to lure out the supposed mastermind behind the murders, but someone like that would obviously not fall for the Keiichi bait, and instead either skip town or go after "Mion" directly, and I doubt Shion had any good plans to deal with a trained killer and his goons.
I don't even think she was handling the Mion role all that well either, given how she screwed up as the class rep (in exactly the same way she did a year prior), and only got away with it because Keiichi reasoned it was just her time of the month, and nobody really had reasons to be suspicious of Mion.
Shion never accomplished any of her actual goals, and only managed to kill all those people because they kept putting themselves in extremely vulnerable positions due to reasons well beyond Shion's control. Her entire story was just a big cosmic joke when you really think about it.

Well, Ooishi may have figured some of this out after everything went down and people were already dead. Yes, she had a lot of resources available by pretending to be Mion, but she did use them decently enough, Mion has had that position during all the curse shit and was always too passive in comparison.

Shion was never going to find out the truth about Satoshi, because no one she could even suspect knew anything anyway. All she finds out is that Oryou and the Sonozakis bluff and take credit for shit, and that Mion didn't even know until after Satoshi was gone. Unless she blamed Irie or something and targeted him, but she had no reason to believe he was anything but an ally to Satoshi, and even then the Yamainu would protect Irie.

The issue is that there wasn't even any character growth. Highlighting Satoko's refusal to accept the world changing and her ill will towards Rika's school life in the anime from the very start is odd when in the end she just gets to walk back to a dream world where the world remained frozen and idyllic rather than Hinamizawa falling apart and her needing to face the truth she'd need to move on too.

And, for Rika's side, the anime just had no explanation for her seemingly ignoring Satoko, especially when she disappeared for days. The finale just acted like that was never a thing.

That's exactly what I'm talking about though. In the anime, the only introduction the Witch Side of Satoko gets is "goodbye nii-nii". So, yeah, nothing dealing with her feels natural since from the very start her characterization is just off. Sure, but the anime completely skipped on how she changed to the point of being fine with planning and executing the killings, which is my point. But we did see her justification, remember? It's basically Cypher's argument in the Matrix. Just like how Rika doesn't care about past fragments, only the winning one. All her friends in those failed worlds can rot for all she cares, and we know she's willing to kill to ensure her happiness if needed. Satoko is just more unhinged about it, and in the end Rika wasn't even all that mad, given how much Satoko caused her suffering she seemed pretty damn okay with her in the finale. In a way, Rika is also very loose about the concepts of death and murder.

Those "unnatural circumstances" are the very reason Rika and Satoko stop caring about any consequence and treat kakeras like a videogame. It's the age old story of someone going mad with power, it can happen to anyone. The humblest hobo can become the most severe dictator. Witch Satoko is just the personification of that common trope alongside severe emotional motivation, so it's not like it spurned out of nowhere. The problem is that Satoko herself had already realized she was wrong early on, but the witch side kept going anyways, so I have no reason to keep caring about "Satoko" anymore. Making Witch Satoko sprout even earlier would only hurt things more and make me care even less about this story.

I always hated the concept of the dual Satoko thing anyways. It should have been Satoko just learning from her mistakes and explaining exactly why she was wrong, not this witch thing appearing to justify the continuation of the murders after Satoko had already regretted everything. Not that we were given a satisfying reason for goodtoko's change of mind anyway, Teppei treated her well and now she regrets killing Rika? Not convincing at all, she doesn't even address her personal issues with Rika, she just decides she was wrong and that's it.

Also, please note that I'm not saying I agree with Satoko's justification, I'm just saying that she did have one. After all, she wasn't murderous in the slightest prior to becoming a looper and learning that consequences aren't real, and it's understandable that becoming a looper would completely warp someone's mentality and morality. Sure, but we don't see her getting there. It just comes out of nowhere like almost everything witch/looping related. There is logic behind it, but it'd all flow naturally and make the witch/human dichotomy feel less like a complete break if we could actually see her character getting there.

Witch Satoko appears as early as the "goodbye nii-nii" scene even in the anime though, we just get no elaboration at all on what she represents at that point.

Remember, it's not Witch Satoko taking over and forcing Satoko to kill Teppei. It's human Satoko briefly attempting to retake herself after witch Satoko already had a gun aimed at his head. The one who was in control all the time even before that duel was the witch side already.

The moment someone learns that consequences don't exist should shatter one's prior concept of everything immediately, it's an extremely life-changing event that creates a 180 on your brain. Plus she does give Rika one last chance remember? Then after realizing the same thing happens anyway she just says fuck it. Not to mention, Eua tells her that the only way of looping from now on is by dying, do you think Satoko would have killed Rika if there were other ways of looping? This is just corruption at work. Rika's used to dying anyway, like I said, she wasn't even that mad after their battle in the final episode despite how much Satoko made her suffer. I feel like you're still treating her actions from real human perspective rather than a looper's.

But it doesn't matter, because Satoko was still 100% on board at that point and wasn't disagreeing or anything like she did in Tatariakashi. They were still one being at the time. If Satoko didn't agree prior to that, she would have complained before, but no, she only felt she was wrong after Teppei treated her well. There's nothing suggesting Goodtoko was prevented from complaining prior to that. After all, Satoko does admit that "she was wrong" meaning she had agreed to the murders before. You were suggesting that the manga should lay more blame on Witch Satoko did you not?

Note that the first time she kills Rika in the anime it's just because she wanted "take" her metaphorically as they both left that life. She didn't even know Rika was a looper.

No, what I'm saying is that the anime didn't really present how that change happened, just said it happened, which leads to later issues regarding the characterization of human and witch Satoko.

My point is that the manga should focus more on actually showing Satoko's growth and changes due to the looping, so that when she's starting to planning how she'll break Rika and even kill people to do that, it should be clear she isn't thinking as a human anymore. That way, it makes the distinction of her human and witch sides much more clear. Like you say there, due to the lack of exposition and development in the anime, everything is blurry, leaving space to interpretations like yours - that human Satoko was already acting like Witch Satoko - which makes no sense because then what is Witch Satoko in this case? Those are just supposed to be different sides of her personality, not actually different people. So, they shouldn't align like that in the first place. By showing clearly the development and birth of Witch Satoko, something the anime completely failed to do with that single "goodbye nii-nii" line, a more linear and understandable character evolution can be drawn. One that at the same time can be used to portray human Satoko as relatively innocent, while also showing Witch Satoko in a more direct way as an evolution of Satoko.
