Any day, he could wake up and simply say "I am going to make a lot of money off of Touhou."

He'd license the property to a major animation studio and he'd immediately be rolling in the dough.

He could do this *whenever he wants*. He literally has millions of dollars at his fingertips.

But he doesn't, because he's ZUN, and he values his awesome hat more than money.

There is no such thing as selling out. Whoever said that obviously doesn't know how business works in Japan. For example, some people have the assumption that if you're the mangaka or original creator of an anime, you can get millions of dollars simply by asking someone to publish your stuff. Sadly this is not the case. Even the mangakas of ungodly popular shows like Naruto and Full Metal Alchemist struggled to make it to the next day for a few years, even while their anime was airing.

ZUN is just a talentless weasel that would be lost without his fanbase. Cant draw, can't write, cant manage his own business, and in my 'opinion' he cant compose. The ONLY thing he's good at is programming.

From what I recall from reading summaries of translated interviews from the past (i.e. very secondhand sources), ZUN said he made the Touhou games primarily to be stuff that he wanted to play. I'm pretty sure he wasn't aiming for it to become popular or the monster of the doujinshi scene.

I've always thought RTG's criticisms of ZUN to be silly at best.

This is hard to explain. To understand what was meant by that post the following conditions have to be met.
-You throw away your bias for ZUN.
-You realize ZUN is a programmer first and foremost, and he probably puts as much effort into his music as he does his art (see: zero).
-You admit that out of all the categories of game creation, music is the hardest part to fail at. Think back to old retro games on the SNES and Sega Genesis. Have you ever heard bad music before?

The reason why fans feel the need to do remixes of his songs is because they see it as something they can overcome. Let me elaborate, the reason why Touhou has thousands of fanart is not, I repeat, NOT because ZUN is a good artist. ZUN's art is so bad that it leaves room for improvement. Being the bandwagon/uncreative hicks that the Japs are, it should come to you as no surprise that they would pounce on the open opportunity of using someone else work as a template. But the Japs are smart, they know who to mess with, notice how you never see them trying to improve on Nobuo Uematsu's work. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of FF remixes out there, but most are just sampled remixes.

>You admit that out of all the categories of game creation, music is the hardest part to fail at.

Here's a protip from someone that has created a few games.

-If you don't know how to program your project wont get off the ground. It doesn't matter how much you google or how much time you put into it, it's just not going to happen; no exceptions.
-If you don't know how to draw you'll manage to get by. My first game sprites looked a lot better than ZUN's, which in my opinion is quite pathetic considering the fact that he's been doing this for 2 decades.
-If you have zero composer skills your music will still come out fine, depending on what VSTs you used. It's really hard to mess up a composition. This is not to say a musicians job is easy or anything, to put it in layman's terms, it's easy to get into, but hard as hell to master.

It should come to you as no surprise that programmers are paid more than artist and musicians respectively.

Programming is not as hard as people think it is. You really can teach yourself from one of those teach yourself books, and then make a simplistic game using the programming language's online documentation as a reference. If you're any good at logic or common sense, you won't have much trouble.

Game engines are cheating in my opinion, that's the composer's equivalent of borrowing someone's sheet music. I was referring to independent development.

Also, knowing the language isn't even the first step towards game creation. By the time I was 13 I had already memorized the basics of C. Little did I know that didn't mean nothing if I didn't have a strong grasp of algebra, calculus, and physics. Even creating a basic platformer with realistic gravity took me months.

At least with music and art you get to visually see/feel your improvement. Even til today I still suck as a composer, but whenever I walk away from a long day of dicking around with cubase I always have a smile on my face. Music simply put is fun to do. Coding on the other hand, not so much. And this is coming from a guy that eats compiler for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

ZUN, unlike other designers needs his fans to create/define his plot-less characters. I'm not referring to sells, I'm referring to the fact that his characters are generic, cliche, and uninspired. Never confuse cannon Touhous with fannon Touhous. They are very different things. Cirno for example doesn't even speak two paragraphs in the game she debuted in. Yet fannon some how managed to turn her into a legendary comic relief character that would give Spongebob Squarepants a run for his money.

I can dispute this claim that "ZUN isn't doing this for the money." If he really wanted fans to play his games he wouldn't charge money for his games at the cons. Also, if you recall his comments during the day the Touhou anime got released, ZUN said he didn't like big projects like that, because it discourages the smaller projects.

>>3725848
>But still we have to give him some credit, without him being the original creator we wouldn't have so much doujins stuff to immerse ourselves with him.
Stuff created by the fans != stuff created by ZUN. Here's a philosophical conundrum that will make you realize how much ZUN has used you. Touhou was created in such a way where the characters and stories had room for improvement (i.e., templates). Games like Metal Gear on the other hand have (virtually) no room for improvement. The reason why you see hundreds of different interpretations of the characters is because they've never been officially defined. Now if ZUN was to sell out like so many Anons have suggested in this thread, the Touhous would be given canon plots and personalities (kinda like the Touhou anime). ZUN realizes the second he sells out it will mark the end of the Touhou fanbase. It's the software equivalent of GNU/Linux selling out their software rights to Micro$oft.

It's sad that obnoxious fanboys such as the op never realized this.
