>The only use the archive has ever had to people of sense is in conjunction with Greasemonkey to make you able to view a thread you've had open in a tab one last time after it's died while you were away.

Using /jp/ without the archive feels like using 4chan without the Firefox extension. It's a fucking tool, hating the archive is as dumb as hating other tools like the Thread filter or the 4chan extension.

If you don't feel the need to use it, good for you, but I've been assuming I can always check on a thread after it 404s for quite a while now and it feels weird using /jp/ without that feature.

30 to 40 minutes of googling (depending on if it's your first time).

If the archive was to experience a harddrive failure, hundreds of Anons, including myself would be mad at Eksopl for failing to archive/backup our data.

Eksopl has two options, 1) he can back up all of the data to DVDs, or 2) he could torrent the data. Either way, that data (or should I say our data) needs to be protected. Hopefully Eksopl can be considerate of this statement.

>> No.3697154

>>3697020
A webserver is just a beefy computer that is collocated in a datacenter, which is a warehouse of servers all hooked up to fast connections.

You can run a site off your computer that is running inside your closet just fine, but residential connections usually have shitty upstream. But with fiber becoming common, it's still totally feasible to do so for small sites. AoRF did this in the /a/rchive's beginnings.

Then you have several other ways of hosting a website. If you just have a regular, run of the mill website, you can pay 5 bucks/month for shared hosting to Dreamhost or someone else like that. Shared hosting is when webhosting companies, who own many webservers colocated at some (or more) datacenters shove several people onto servers and people just share the server's resources among them.

After a certain point, if you start using up too much resources (or if you want to do stuff like running persistent processes in the background, like the archive does), you will start harming the other users that are sharing the server with you and your web host will politely tell you to get out. At that point, you can move to private servers or VPSes, which is when companies who own and run servers split servers into slices (but not many) using virtualizing techniques and each slice behaves like a full blown server. Each slice is assigned their own RAM, CPU power, disk space, etc.

>> No.3697158

When you outgrow that, you'll start looking into dedicated servers. You can either rent a dedicated server to a datacenter that offers that scheme or you can buy the server yourself, rent a rack in a DC, drive to the DC, give it to them and then you just pay for the space you're renting + the connection. Last time I checked, 4chan ran on a single rack with 4 servers colocated there or so (which is ridiculously low for a site of 4chan's size, the only reason moot can get away with it is because 4chan's contents are essentially static and the data storage requirements are low.)

When you outgrow colo'd servers, that means you are running in the big leagues now. You are probably now running on several servers, with everything separated from each other (database servers, caching servers, reverse proxies, image servers, load balancing crap, etc). You're eventually going to need to look into paying Content Distribution Networks like Akamai and the likes to store content like images and videos for you, because you just handle it on your own. Or you can make your own CDN out of a cluster of servers, obviously.

moot could buy a house every year off what it costs to keep 4chan up. That is no lie.

He makes money off 4chan, everything else has to be a lie. If he's claiming he can't make more than $3000 out of advertising in 4chan, he's either a liar or he really sucks at it.

Ad's really don't make that much. Selling porn is how you make money on the internet.

You sure bro?
The guy paying for easymodo is easily making few hundred bucks with a popular site.

>> No.3699244

So why is he paying someone else for the bandwidth and hosting?

>> No.3699255

I never once used easymodo. I've always been aware of it, but I've just never been that much of a faggot.

I just commit significant events in /jp/ to memory. Threads that go over the limit more often than not aren't worth checking or posting in anyways.

The "ghost board" is something like an extension to the archive. The archive is a mirror to /jp/ (and some other boards), so it contains roughly the same stuff as /jp/ contains, except it doesn't decay, and it shows deleted posts too. It also has an option of making new posts in mirrored threads, or allows you to create new threads on the archive directly (of course "ghost" posts are marked accordingly). It has some limited use for threads which have decayed or are not wanted on /jp/.

Obviously he make money off 4chan.
Do you think the snorgtees or adult japan advertisement you see is free?

>> No.3699479

>>3699454
>allows you to create new threads on the archive directly
You can't do this, the closest you can get is to make a thread on /jp/ and then delete it right away.

thanks

>>3699470
If you think the ads do anymore than cover the costs you are living in a dream land. The kind of adverts that 4chan can host don't pay that well. we are talking fraction of fractions of a cent per page view. /b/ pays most of the bills.

>> No.3699490

>>3699485
/b/ costs most of the money as well.

>> No.3699497

>>3699479
Hopefully Eksopl can add that.

>> No.3699514

>>3699490
Yeah, if he was to axe it, the cost would drop. Some say killing /b/ would be out of the question because they would flock to the other boards. The secret to get rid of /b/ is to lure them away to another chan like 7chan.

>> No.3699519

>>3699485
He is clearly making monies from it.
If not he would have sold 4chan long ago.

>> No.3699526

>>3699514
Why would he want to kill /b/? It brings most income. The normalfagfest it is right now is the best environment for placing ads moot could ever dream to achieve. He could axe all other boards if he gets tired of supporting them, but not /b/.

>> No.3699575

According to Anonymous-san, /b/ is the final boss of the Internet. Once A-san reaches a high enough level, he'll be able to stop /b/, once and for all. I assume he levels up by banning /a/nons and /jp/ers.

I wonder which mod has the most experience points.
