VR seemed entertaining at first, but you're right, it's a massive hassle. The biggest problem for me is just how dull the single camera angle makes films in general, with the second biggest problem being resolution.

If you download pot player or anything else with a 3D/VR mode, you can see how crappy the resolution actually is without even using a headset. It's unbelievably bad, "4k" resolution is actually about the same as 240p relative to a regular screen.

So no, it's not 500x250 per eye, it's closer to ~540x540 per eye - 1080x540 if you want to be pedantic, if not more. Adding them side by side isn't accurate or fair, since they're at different angles, and each image is going to each eye.
"4K" VR outresolves most older headsets, like my 2880 x 1600 Odyssey+ or a mobile phone in Google Cardboard or something.
And you get the added visual acuity from:
1. Two combined images
2. Not a shitty MPEG2
