A gravure idol (グラビアアイドル gurabia aidoru), often abbreviated to gradol (グラドル guradoru), is a Japanese female model who primarily models on magazines, especially men's magazines, photobooks or DVDs. Gravure idols appear in a wide range of photography styles and genres. In their infancy, Seinen manga mags would usually feature a cover with a mascot character in it (Young Jump had the Bear, Big Comic Sprits had fruits, Young Magazine had the pig, etc). But I believe around 82 was that Young Magazine started to use gravure in their covers. This took a while to become the norm but it was established by the late 80's-early 90's. For Shonen mags, really only Shonen Magazine and Champion (and to a lesser extent, Shonen Sunday) went full on with gravure by the 90's. As for why exactly....I have no idea. But I don't think it really helps with sales, as 1: I think it just makes it more embrrassing to read in public, and 2: The biggest circulating Seinen manga mag is actually Big Comic Original, which never used Gravure covers at all. Conversly, the lowest circulating mag in the Big Comic family is the one that has Gravure covers: Big Comic Spirits. I conjecture that they are just aiming for a secondary demographic to susutain themselves.
Of course, the majority of Seinen mags that use Gravure are mostly for the specific younger subeset of Seinen, magazines aimed towards even older men or alternative stuff like Big Comic, Morning, Afternoon, Grand Jump, Comic Beam, Comic Zenon, and much more.
