It's almost that time again! /jp/'s GTA server will be resuming it's (un)regular hosting this coming weekend - Saturday the 9th - at around 7 PM EST. Please look forward to it!

So, changes - there's actually a bit to talk about!

Big thing; the cars. I completely remade the vehicle system from scratch. You can now own and spawn multiple vehicles. Additionally, there's a preview for every car you can buy now so you can freely look through them all and find one you like and not have to do guesswork/figure out the in-game name of the car before buying it. This has been a long-requested feature and I'm super happy to have it in working order. I managed to patch up the old stock resource we'd been using thus far well enough that it was in working order, but there wasn't a whole lot more I could do with it. The old thing was written with near decade-old SQL functions which handled things in a pretty wonky way to boot. It's a lot easier to keep track of player-owned vehicles now and we can even have cool stuff like (eventually) being able to save your color and upgrades to it, or selling it to earn a portion of your money back.
Naturally the DB structures aren't compatible, but I did manage to import everyone's existing vehicles by adding the rows manually, so if you already had a vehicle prior it'll carry over.

Some other stuff:
-fixed the broken icons on Shrine Maiden's factory map
-return of themed Shrine Maiden maps (remember Reimu and co vs Makai?)
-bomb tag has an actual end and auto-restart now
-A whole bunch of vehicle models/textures optimized and reimplemented to help reduce crashes
-fixed that bug where you'd sometimes spawn in in the middle of nowhere (probably)
-A brand new gamemode I made from scratch, currently in the testing phase we can try out!

Also, I've added simple Tenhou integration so you can, in fact, play mahjong in-game now. And even more news; the 1.5.9 update for MTA dropped just a few days ago introducing a whole host of new scripting functions and general bugfixes. Notably, I believe you can allocate custom object IDs now as well. The guys working on the SCM interpreter also managed to get a fully playable SP mission working too, we'll have that co-op SA campaign any year now.

It's hard to say right now depending on what exactly they wind up breaking with it, but I can't say I'm really worried about it. Absolute worst case scenario I'd say a few functions may need to be rewritten, but even in that case it's usually a simple fix. There shouldn't be anything too problematic whenever it rolls around.

I made a custom Misumaru meshmod since that one isn't quite right, but I might need help fixing it since the dress ends looking too dark in game (the same bug that the Saki and Okuu models had) and I can't figure out how to fix it in 3DS Max. I was able to fix those dark textures and weights on Misumaru. It just has to do with the color shading that's applied to texture groups, some were not equal and slightly darker, and some reflection values were kinda all over the place. Pic related is what is usually the default values for these. I'm not sure how its done in 3DS Max but there should options to change these.

Once I touch up the weights on Momoyo I'll post a DL for them

More or less. It was actually a bit simpler than I thought it'd wind up being due to the way Tenhou handles rooms. This also wasn't possible until recently due to the function that whitelistis non-google URLs for clients being pretty bugged. If you were around for it, you might remember last year? When I was messing around with different YouTube alternatives for the cinema, it'd bug your cursor out and you had to relog.

Actually I'd originally planned on hosting closer to, or even on, Halloween, but a lot of stuff like this played a part in the decision to do it a few weeks prior. There's been a lot of changes and it's easy to not consider certain things when working on scripts. It's good to get user input on stuff before going too far down the rabbit hole, so to speak.

And while also not really related; in regards to content I've really been wanting to incorporate a game mode that makes use of spellcards like you see in SP. Still not really sure how to go about it though, maybe something akin to the Nue gamemode.

once you've done that. just install MTA:SA, point to that install directory of GTA:SA and launch MTA:SA. MTA:SA is independent but just uses the GTA:SA resources

If you've got an idea in mind for a gamemode, by all means go all out. There's not much that can't be done in theory. I can't promise anything, but I do keep some of the more novel ideas in the back of my head.

Trying to think up a reasonable solution to this has had me agonizing for the better part of several months. At this point I'm floating the idea of just throwing back in all the remaining old models this coming weekend and seeing how it goes. It should only -really- be a problem when it's running alongside all the custom maps, which usually isn't done towards near the end anyways. I think I've heard more complaints about the car models over the past several runs then about crashing over the entirety of the time I've worked on this server. It's enough to wear even me out. Funnily enough, it's not a particularly difficult job either, depending on the vehicle. Just ridiculously time-consuming as you need to make sure the topology isn't reasonably affected and for the heavier vehicles this is easier said than done since not all of them have hidden geometry that are easy ways to cut back on poly-counts. To finish what's left you'd likely have to work on it daily, for a month straight. And even that's being mildly generous assuming you don't half-ass the models. If the crashes aren't too bad this coming week it might just be better to keep them in that way and I'll just keep picking away at making them more server-suitable.

To answer your question; I'd say it depends. As long as it's not something that was OC or will be particularly missed, I think it'd be fine.

Anything around 1 MB for the model, and 1 MB for textures is the ideal. If it's a necessity, I'd say you could even probably eke out 2 MB but of course less is better. The smaller the models are on average means a lower overall crash rate, so a few exceptions are fine as long as it's not the norm.

Wake up and smell the coffee. The server'll be up soon for those interested. It's improv today so nothing too huge, but all the old vehicles have been reimplemented. I expect crashes to still happen in conjuction with custom maps but there's around 50 vehicles under or around 1 MB now, so in theory they should be reduced somewhat, so this is partly a test to see how much of an impact that's made too.

If you got last week's pre-download, all you'll need is this which is the new model files since most other stuff is small script changes, otherwise make sure you get the DL from >>36897128 first.

i find races to be very fun. We do replay the same maps and theres tons of other race maps out there which would spice it up. Not just the circuit maps but the whacky maps like that dam runner one, pizza run, speed for weed, etc. Its not fun to play them all the time but trying new ones stops people becoming bored or trying hard to win because no one will know how to play the map.

Cross country racing would be fun, where you have a start point and a end point with no checkpoints and you try to find the quickest way.
Capture the flag can somehow tie into a bigger map. Game modes in gensokyo or tokyo.

Sort of like a combination of the stealth and prototype game mode, where one person goes against everyone else. The team with everyone else on it would spawn with basic weapons like a pistol, weak smg, pump shotgun, or rarely an AK or something of the sort. The lone player would get a good arsenal, maybe have a selection of his weapons like the start of stealth, but all are open. The lone player would also spawn with body armor and have some method of tracking every other player with wallhack or a minimap or such. The big team of players maybe have sprint disabled to make them weaker somehow, as the lone player is still a normal guy in body arnor. It would be played on the same maps as stealth and the lone player starts with a minute of invisibility to plan his first strike. Maybe if the big team has too many players the lone player may get a single shot rocket launcher to even the odds. I'm thinking of it in the same way of those videogames where one well armed and trained guy is supposed to take out a dozen or more basic thugs by himself, but it still tries to lend itself to realism.

The yin yang balls ended up fitting perfectly, and only a few kb. Great find again, already looks much better then the old ball. Didn't even have to resize them. This just makes me think Touhou-themed abilities or ball effects would be a lot of fun like somebody mentioned. Maybe as some kind of pickups or score reward? I'll think about it some more.

By all means, if you think of something don't be shy. Building up from dumb ideas like the soccer and trying them out to see what breaks is far and away the most enjoyment I get from what I do on the server. Even if an idea doesn't fully pan out, that doesn't mean it can't be utilized in something else. Either way, I just like reading peoples' gamemode ideas. The only real downside is time commitment. I'll try poking around for some more race maps, another anon mentioned having some classic ones earlier in the thread too that sounded interesting.

How about a similar concept but only one player gets to carry weapons, he spawns in a room with every weapon available to pick from, once he leaves the room a timer starts counting down, and the rest of the players have to hide or run away, though they're all a bit faster and can jump a bit higher, the last one standing gets to be the shooter, if multiple players are left standing then the shooter is chosen at random among them. So, a few things; the car soccer mode now has functioning teams and spawns. Also cars on the same team will no longer collide with each other. Though the collisions are admittedly a little bit jank until I can think of a better solution since it's a little convoluted working with them. Also, new accessories! You can, in fact, wear the cube now, among a few other themed items.

And another thing that may actually be of some relative pertinence - it appears my GPU is dying and will probably kick the bucket basically any time. I don't think it (should) be a problem for tomorrow at least, but just a fair forewarning in any case.

If any of you NEETs have around an hour to kill, the server might be up a little bit later. I was mostly just doing it for kicks but using an older backup I had of the pedestrians didn't seem to affect anyone's FPS at all last Saturday like I briefly mentioned before, so I'm curious to try and trial it specifically for a little bit to see if I can narrow down the problem since it'll bother me all week otherwise.

The only thing that immediately comes to mind is trying to spawn the peds into alternate dimensions (e.g. Gensokyo) somehow screws something up. It's curious, because the actual client and serverside resource usage of it is negligible - at least not to the point I'd expect it to sporadically bomb people into a slideshow which makes me wonder if it's some obscure MTA-related issue, sort of like the problem the SDM had for a while.

For posterity; the issue appears to stem from the pedestrians spawning on or near custom map objects, likely relating to the models collisions. Standing around shooting stuff for 5 minutes in Grove Street yielded no FPS changes, while doing so at the SDM yielded a consistently declining FPS to as low as 20, and Akina a more modest ~40. An area of custom mapping in Genso with more well-done collisions however managed to keep a constant 60 FPS even with the maximum number of peds spawned in. I was pretty worried this was something I'd have to shelve for a long while, so I'm glad to finally know what the issue is. It's one of the funner things I've gotten to work on.

I feel like talking, so just to expand on my thoughts a little bit more this means that, all in all, it's a pretty easy immediate fix. All that (should) need to be done is clean up all the pathing on or around anywhere particularly problematic, and they can just be reimplemented later down the line. A far better alternative than me thinking they just couldn't be used at all, so I'm actually pretty happy with how today turned out since it means pedestrians can still be a thing. They're a bit more limited than SP AI, but I do think they add a bit more life to the world especially with the themed zones like Old Hell. Can always add more to it later on too.

The revelation about the peds not being entirely broken got me a bit going. I've been messing around with it and I'm under the impression pedestrian vehicles should be possible too without bombing the server. If you handle all the "walking" pedestrians clientside - which are more interactive by nature of being clientsided anyways - and just keep the traffic itself serverside, they should (theoretically) work pretty well together. The only thing I'm not sure about is how low the vehicle density needs to go to stop performance drops in a normal run. I'll try messing with it this coming weekend. Even with not a whole bunch of cars spawning in it does make it feel a lot closer to actually playing single-player SA.

I neglected to mention it from my half-asleep delirium, but thank you both for your contributions as well. The new models look great, and bringing even a few model poly's down is a huge load off since it equates to less frequent crashing. When a lot of custom elements are spawned in like with today from the peds they're more readily apparent; most of the crash logs submitted today were from memory issues. Nature of the beast though - just gotta keep picking away at it. When the stars align we'll eventually have a crash-free run.

For skins at least there is the mod wiki which I guess you could update the dead links for from their uploader. But the non-character stuff on there is pretty disorganized. And there's the usual risks of webhosting stuff like since you never know if the plug will get pulled one day.

A shame that dat:// project thing an anon from here was working on died. I remember they archived the server's old vehicle models from back then.

I found some old 2ch threads about him though, pretty interesting stuff. Apparently the reason he nuked all his mods was because he was anonymously smack-talking ISAO's Reimu MMD model that had recently been ported over to SA on 2ch. Somebody called him out as being anti-Touhou, and he shot back by saying he was a Touhou mod author and threatened to remove all his mods. The poster he was arguing with didn't back down, so he eventually revealed who he was and promptly killed off all his mods and blogs, and dropped off the planet. It seemed like he was pretty well-respected prior, but after that most Japs had a pretty low opinion of him. Wild how a fight over something so silly devolved into making his mods near-impossible to find a decade later.

It actually seems like there was a lot of drama in general back in the day regarding the mod wiki and such. Pretty funny seeing old names brought up in their heyday, especially a few I've talked to like KC.

I was actually a bit mistaken now that I actually bothered to read through the thread. He was arguing against using ISAO's model in GTA because he wasn't sure if rereleasing it as a mod counted as "redistributing" it and was telling people not to use it until there was a more concrete answer, since there was the fear of ISAO who was apparently super strict about foreigners and such using his models quitting over it, or something along those lines.
