Hi /jp/,
As I am attempting to learn japanese, I am interested in finding some japanese music that doesn't suck shit, so I can use it to help with vocab/immersion.
Basically:
- Singing throughout most of the song.
- Singing is relatively easy to understand, so I can pick out words. Nothing too slurred.
-No cutesy girly voices like most bad jpop (girl singers are fine if their voice is somewhat strong)
-Preferably not too electronic, but I'm lenient if its done well.

Stuff I've tolerated so far includes the song from 5 cm per second, and the OP to spice and wolf 1

Recommendations are appreciated.

Right then. Let's turn this into a real music thread.

Someone mentioned Shiina Ringo before, and I can't agree more. As a songwriter, she's amazing, and as a vocalist I have a lot of respect for her. This is some of the best music Japan has to offer, in my opinion.

Okay, for real this time.

Next up is Asobi Seksu, whose name makes me cringe every time I type it. Their musical sense is a lot better than their naming sense, though. This one sort of drifts between hard and ethereal rock, making something that'll creep you out whenever you can stop rocking along. I'm not too familiar with this one though, so I'm not sure how much is in English and how much is in Japanese - don't worry about Engrish though, I'm actually cheating with this one. They're based in New York.

This one I kind of owe to a friend of mine to post. If you're out there, you know exactly who you are.

The singer(s) in avengers in sci-fi kind of get on my nerves sometimes, but musically they're spot on. Taking the traditional four-piece as far as you can without becoming electronica, every instrument takes full advantage of the electric revolution. I'm pretty sure this guitarist has like 30 effect pedals that complement the ever-present keyboard melodies, making for a fast-paced and fun album, whichever one you pick.

BOaT is quirky, poppy, high-energy, and really really fun. I can only describe Ai Aso as "Chill." This is quite possibly the most relaxing music I've ever shared, and with slow, clear singing throughout it's good for what the OP was looking for. Musically, it does explore a lot of alternative instruments, but mostly sticks with guitar and vocals, occasionally bringing in synthesizers where appropriate.

It's getting really hard not to just post a clusterfuck of noise rock and instrumentals, you know.

Clingon was one of the first bands that I explored when I first broke out of the shell of anime songs, and I've loved them since day one (despite still not being able to find more rips than this). They're not terribly complex, but their quirky love songs earn a place in my heart and the music is groovy enough to be infectious. If you've not heard them before, give them a chance. Go!Go!7188 brings back a very 90s punk feel. All-girl band (I think) but the vocals are strong enough not to feel awkward against the twangy guitar, and varied enough not to say "just another punk band". Seriously, enka? Wow. Sadly, all I have is a best-of, which I plan to remedy later on. Any assistance in this endeavor is both welcome and greatly appreciated.

GOMES THE HITMAN continues the tradition of choosing entirely inappropriate names by being another very chill artist.

OP take notice: Clear, resonant vocals backed by pleasant, soft instruments. Violin and synthesizers kick things off before the traditional drums, bass, and guitar making this album busy yet quite relaxing. He explores a bit throughout, too.

His voice still annoys me at times though. Only one album from me.

Normally I'd post Ruins to spite you, but I'll take the classy route and post Hiromi Uehara to spite you instead.

This very accomplished jazz pianist...is a very accomplished jazz pianist. I dunno, if you like piano and/or jazz give it a listen. There's not much more you can say besides "Awesome," which is appropriate because this is 100% instrumental. If you're a vocalfag, this is not for you.

I am in love with Ikeda Ayako's voice. If you've watched Dennou Coil, she did both the OP and ED.

If you haven't, she does the sort of music you can picture someone who routinely wears sweaters listening to. Piano accompanies her absolutely beautiful vocals, occasionally giving way to the more traditional (wait, can you get more traditional than piano?) four-piece - drums, bass, guitar (both acoustic and electric at times) and keyboard. You can also find some alternative instruments thrown in at times (hey-ho bongos and crickets) but every song on this album puts her beautiful vocals as the backbone of the melody. If you appreciate vocals in any respect, this is worth listening to. I have no idea why I only have the one album.

Female vocalist, relatively heavy electronica but not quite techno. (Admittedly I don't know shit about electronica, so maybe it is. Don't get mad at me please.) This one I definitely remember getting from a /jp/ music thread, and it's definitely worth passing along.

INU puts out a high-energy (big surprise) 80's punk style for a solid album, but of course this being Japan the singer sounds more buzzed than energetic, a slight hint of paranoia in his voice at all times.

Am I trying too hard to describe all of these? Probably not the best thing for OP's purposes, but still good musics.

Midori is also among my personal favorites, though we're getting dangerously close to noise territory with them. I promise I'm just killing time till Sound Horizon finishes.

I have heard them categorized as jazz-punk fusion, a description with which I am content. The lead singer is equally likely to be pounding out the lyrics as though they could break down the walls of oppression or doing a fucking backflip off the bass drum oh god. Meanwhile, said drummer keeps up the pace with an endurance that I can only aspire to, and is met by the electric cellist and keyboardist/pianist/creepy fucking growlist, all of which is prone to drop completely in favor of a solo piano interlude or some such other nonsense.

It's intense, and if you can get into it it's fantastic.

I'm pretty sure someone was asking for Panicsmile before, so here it is.

These guys have a very quirky sound, constantly changing tempos and switching up the musical style halfway through the melody. Noisy, but not quite noise (unless you listen to the songs that are noise, but let's just ignore those for now) and very...niche, in a word. Santara's lovely, if a bit silly. Her voice sounds like she's trying a bit too hard to be country, which I can't really fault her for because it fits the style of the instruments pretty well. Very folky, but not enough to really bother people who shy away from the genre (or so I've been told. I like it, personally.) You might know them as those guys that did the Kemonozume ED, which is also on this album which was the only one by them I could find hint hint wink wink come on guys seriously I can't be the only one with a mediafire account.

I'm not sure if I'm too tired to try and come up with a more eloquent description of serial TV drama or if there's really just not much to say. Pretty decent 90's-esque rock, 128kbps if there's any audiophiles who would care. It's just an EP, so there's not really any harm in giving it a listen.

I thought Sound Horizon was done, but one of the uploads failed.

So hey, have some Trico. I'm always hesitant to use the term post-rock because what the fuck does that even mean, but it's the first thing to come to mind for these guys. There's some real skill going into the songwriting here, and even though it's just an EP it feels like a full album because of it. These guys know how to keep it interesting.

About fucking time!

Sound Horizon I have already described in >>3672463 but I will remind the OP if he's still around that to be a story you have to say your words clearly so as to be heard. The quality of the music itself ranges from "would be better without, really" to "holy shit it's like I'm really a pirate".

I am still uploading those two-parters. It takes a while to upload 1.5 gigabytes. If you don't mind dropping the vocal requirement I can keep going with a lot of cool but mumbly and/or instrumental bands, but I do intend to continue at least a little bit.

You know, whatever.

3cm Tour is mostly instrumental, but they primarily worked on live tours. Another one where post-rock comes to mind first, but the music is written in such a way that it really does feel like the instruments tell their story without the help of voices. You know, the way they're supposed to.

Sadly, these guys actually broke up before they got a chance to release anything past this. Having this album is a treat.

Well, you knew it was gonna happen eventually.

Sekken-ya has been the go-to band for Touhou rock remixes, and for a damn good reason. Even if you don't particularly care for/about Touhou, these guys make some really good music. If you do, though, you're in for even more of a treat. They take every song that they remix and really make it their own, often featuring harmonized vocals between the lead singer and the more high-pitched guitarist (who also takes the lead in a few songs!)

They've also put out an album of nothing but original tunes, if Touhou bothers you that fucking much. I know some of you people just hate it with every fiber of your being.

In order of earliest to most recent releases (Not everything they have, but pretty much everything that matters)

Okay, fellow weea/b/ro (poss in denial)

My Karaoke songs when I'm in Japan are:

Yume no Naka e (ending song to Kare Kano)
Honey Flash (Cutey Honey)
Gessekai (opening to, er, some vampire anime. By Buck Tick (bakku chikku))
Night of Summer Side (KOR opening. Hard)

The problem is that unless the song's REALLY a classic, it'll eventually fall off of the karaoke lists (Gessekai is awesome, but I haven't seen it lately.)

So just learn songs you like and sing to yourself in the shower.

In that case, the ending song to the live action "Hataraki Man" is perfect and perfectly awesome.

I debated uploading this for a long time, but fuck it, we don't live here.

Asian Kung-Fu Generation is one of the bigger J-rock bands. If you don't already know them, then you haven't looked very hard yet, I guess. They've done a few big anime themes, all of which were probably the ones you liked. Singer sucks, lyrics are a little emo, but as far as your run-of-the-mill rock bands go, well they fuckin' rock. They also have the distinction of being one of the bands that started shitty then continued to release progressively better albums instead of forgetting what made them cool and losing steam fast.

MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS, besides breaking two rules of naming, is another high-energy post-rock band (I still don't know whether I'm using that term correctly, but this isn't /mu/ so I don't expect anyone to be reading these little blurbs anyways) with a female vocalist reminiscent of 凛として時雨 only not nearly as annoying. Meanwhile, another upload just finished so hey awesome.

Nanamusica feels like someone who really really likes Sound Horizon, and decided to make their own music. A wide variety of alternative instruments show up throughout the album, her singing is loud and clear, and the subject matter is...well. I'll leave that up to you. The music itself has a sort of half-funky classical feel - most of the music features a violin of some sort - and the melodies feel right at home in, say, a Miyazaki credit roll. Pretty good stuff, no idea where it came from.

I use Annny's music to practice vocal recognition.

His voice is really clear and while most of his back catalogue is Touhou stuff (his circle name is 'TaNaBaTa') he brought out an original EP lately which isn't too bad.

sgt is a post-rock instrumental band, that utilises a violin melody with bass/guitar/drums set up. A lot of their songs are pretty chill, well most of them, but they do have some up beat songs as well.

Good morning, everybody!

Good job keeping the thread alive. I knew y'all could do it. Now, I did upload a couple things, but I popped on here before I even got a chance to brush my teeth. I'm gonna be a little while getting started. Before that though I'd like to give you all a little treat.

My mediafire account has been and will be gradually filled with my music collection - /jp/ related and otherwise. My ultimate goal is to get up every single album I have, as well as duplicate mp3s for sampling purposes since you can't write blurbs for everything in there.

Not everything's going to appeal to anyone, but everyone's welcome to come poke around. http://www.mediafire.com/Kelvin

No Regret Life (How do they keep coming up with this shit?) is what Asian Kung-Fu Generation wants to be, I think. The singer's voice (though a bit strained) actually sounds kind of sexy, and the four-piece behind him plays simple yet hard melodies with some subtle skill. To get this album I actually had to download each song individually from some dude's blog at like 4kb/s, but it was worth it. I'm going back when I have time to get more by these guys.

Meanwhile, folk! Yoshida Takuro of Cromartie fame was requested last time we did this, but only one anon came forth with any. Apparently his stuff is crazy hard to find, but we've at least got a little bit. His stuff is very undeniably folk, but it's also a lot of fun to listen to. Sleepy.ab is another one of those would-be-excellent-but-those-vocals-god-damn bands. Very chill post-rock, for the most part. I usually put it on at some point when I write, and it makes excellent background music, but if you let yourself focus too much on that guy's voice you'll just end up aggravated. Or at least, I do. Everyone's different.

Messed up the formatting for the file names, so I'll be reuploading these at some point in the interest of making them possible to find on /rs/ with a search of the band name. In the mean time, they're here!

Holy shit Number Girl.

These guys are as influential as YMO on music in Japan. One of the first indie rock bands, their sound was heavy and fast, the sort of thing that 90's teenagers hold in their hearts and continue rocking the fuck out to to this day. The members would later go on to work in Bloodthirsty Butchers, Toddle, the previously posted Zazen Boys, and Vola and the Oriental Machine (of which I have an album that's so getting posted later). These guys get a megapost and a wiki-hunt - and they fucking deserve it.

AFRICAEMO blew my fucking mind when I first heard it, and I've been looking for more by them ever since. The vocals are pretty much indiscernible but musically it's like the lead singer of System of a Down is rapping in Japanese over a funk reggae hip-hop band. Shit is wacky.

Speaking of reggae, The Heavy Manners are a japanese band that has absolutely no place playing the kind of music they do. Their English (and their Jamaican accents) is actually not bad, and the music itself is extremely relaxing. Nothing too out of the ordinary for reggae, though. the band apart is an odd beast. Somewhere between smooth jazz and hard rock, they have a really interesting sound before they have anything else. The vocals, sadly, are 120% Engrish, but I've heard worse accents and the instruments more than make up for it as long as you can keep the singer from bothering you too much.

The Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra is sickeningly happy, as any ska band these bands will be. They're still fun to listen to if you don't take yourself too seriously, and they're another good band for the OP's purposes - despite a few English tracks, many of the others feature very clear, loud singing with an emphasis on the lyrics and grooving to said lyrics. And now, the previously mentioned Vola and the Oriental Machine. This sort of resembles The Mars Volta when they're not going off on some 20-minute jazz odyssey, mixed with a healthy dose of funk and that hard and fast Number Girl style. Very solid EP, but the bitrate is pretty weak and it's all I've got from them (I think it was from the other share thread, actually.) Contributions are welcome, as always.

Aah, I forgot what the bump limit is. It's so rarely relevant these days. How sad.

Furukawa Miki (Written in all kana for some reason) is more of a musician than a singer, sadly. While the music jumps from one genre to another wildly, featuring both acoustic and electric classical instruments, traditional four-pieces, and the occasional crazy keyboard interlude, her singing (and lyrics, but those are a lost cause nowadays) doesn't explore nearly as much and ends up looking painfully mediocre against its backing. Still, this is a solid album that I'd recommend to anyone here.

Another Touhou band - one of very few I actually approve of. Kishida Kyoudan is responsible for some of the best rock remixes around, with a mix of very distinctive guitar work and occasional touches of organ that get improved (Not shit all over) by the later inclusion of a singer and the reform into Kishida Kyoudan and the Akeboshi Rockets! This one's kind of cheating as it's already been uploaded, but I'm actually running up against the end of my collection and I still don't want to go on to instrumental bands yet.

And with this, I think I'm done. Might pop in later if I find something, but for now you can contribute your own music.

Ishibashi Eiko was the bassist I think in Panicsmile, and her solo album is just as bizarre and entrancing as their work. Pianos, keyboards, traditional rock instruments, harmonicas, is that a fucking kazoo? All come together in all the best and worst ways, making for an album that plays with its genre as much as it does its time signatures. Delightfully experimental, yet beautifully classical.

Apparently they were called "tricoror" and worked mostly with compilation albums before their first solo album, at which point they had changed their name to "trico". The problem with finding more is that not only is trico the name of another also Japanese artist (Well, it's actually trico! but that really doesn't count for much.) but it is a very very popular name for companies.

Basically I'm having the same problem as you usually do when you look for any band with a one-word name. As for similar music...I'd love to recommend some stuff, but I'm terrible with similar. Always thinking too deeply about it. What about it do you like? We can go from there.

Oops, sorry for the late reply. I suppose I just like his voice more than anything, it's really unique to me. The actual music is fine, but I find myself listening to his voice more.

Primary is a doujin band featuring doujin singer Yuiko. Think happy pop-rock, sometimes more pop than rock. Nothing amazing, but worth a listen.

The second link in this post is Ishikawa Sayuri, one of the most famous enka singers. Here's one of her compilations which includes the same song. Not bad at all, if you like enka.

Kalafina is Yuki Kajiura's band, so if you know her music then you know what this sounds like. This album is mainly vocal tracks, some of which I think are the ending songs from Kara no Kyoukai.

All right, guys. Megauploader here.

I've been scouring the interwebs to expand a few of the collections I particularly like, and plan to verify and upload every one of them up here. However, this thread looks like it's gonna die pretty soon (Unless I'm mistaking the bump limit again again) so I might not actually be able to get everything up before it's on the way out. I'll be starting a new thread if I have to.

For those who're following this one though, here's what's on the list.

Shiina Ringo - Sanmon Gossip (Relatively new album from this year, the only one I've had time to listen to so far. Awesome awesome awesome.)
Asobi Seksu - "Hush", "Citrus"
Ai Aso - "Lavender Edition", split-EP with wada "She's So Heavy"
Go!Go!7188 - "Daisoku Hoko", "Gyotaku", "Tategami", "Ryuuzetsuran", "Parade", "569", "Tora no Ana", "Antenna" (Most of these are off /rs/ actually, if you feel like going through Megaupload)
Ikeda Ayako - "Water Colors", "Otomusubi"
SUPER BUTTER DOG - grooblue
Teshima Aoi - "Gedo Senki Kashū", "Haru no Kashū"
Some more Vola and the Oriental Machine, if I can find any.

Love you.
