Usually some form of patching (generally code + DSATM) is needed for anti-piracy measures. But if the old kernel is really an issue, the only choice for R4 users is to use YSMenu. I never bothered to switch to that, but you could give it a try.

Apart from what's already been mentioned, I've been playing Soma Bringer recently and it isn't bad. You can grab the translation patch over at GBAtemp. Also, Lux-Pain and Time Hollow are worth looking at.
