I found that it had its own section in iichan, but I never clicked it since I had no idea what it was.
I kept seeing discussions about it as a shooting game in random places, but I never picked it up still.
I kept hearing all that IOSYS crap in nico melodies and stuff like that but I never picked up on that.
I was playing TF2 and heard some guy spamming Touhou music. He told me what it was, but I didnt pick it up.
Then one day I was bored and decided to look for a new shooter after I was getting tired of Cho Ren Sha. Due to all that build up, the first thing that popped into my head was Touhou, so I picked up EoSD and SA as my first games last year, at around the time when SA was brand new.

After about a month of wondering what the f*ck this was all about, I found out what the "precious thing" was and decided to look further. Heard more music, liked it, decided to go after the games... and went through 2 frustrating ways to get them to play on my Mac. Crossover still can't play EotSD at a real speed and can't play PoFV, MoF, SA, or UFO. I've gotten really good at IN though.

It was like 5 or 6 years ago where I downloaded a MUGEN pack with some IaMP characters. I just remember them being spammy, broken characters. It also came with IaMP music. I remember the file names, but I couldn't track down where the songs came from. reimu_morning, sakuya_night, alice_morning, patchouli_night. (something like that)

I finally became hooked when someone on /v/ linked Voyage 1970. Then, I listened to IaMP on youtube and my mind blew into a million pieces.

At that point in time shit-all was translated about the series because it was not popular yet, so I really had no clue what was going on, but I liked the games.

I cannot remember the first image I saw, but the first image I ever saw upon visiting Pooshlmer was an image of Aya tripping over Myon and yanking Youmu's panties off. Yeah.

Although I wasn't aware of it, I was exposed to many touhou characters over the course of my life on the internet. It wasn't until quite recently that I've bothered with touhou culture. It was only about five months ago that I downloaded SWR and its expansion. When I did that, I instantly started recognizing characters that I had seen before, so it was kind of interesting.

Ironically, that was the first time I was exposed to Patchouli. She ended up being my main for a while because, and I quote my thought process at the time, "books are cool"

Now I've downloaded some of the shootan gaems and become a full fledged weeaboo. So heart warming ::3

Yeah. The answers you'll get will tell you, more or less:
EoSD is ugly, and you can't see your hitbox, though that might help you learn.
PCB is good to start on.
IN would be good but for the fact that you won't learn to deathbomb quickly if you start with it.
MoF might be suggested, but it could teach you to use bombs too often.
SA is harder in general than most of them; you'll have difficulty starting on it.
UFO system is annoying.
Other games are less likely to be mentioned, though the randomness of PoFV can be good training.

I don't quite remember which was the first touhou I saw but the first picture I identified as touhou was this one. Touhou hijacks were pretty common on /tg/ back then.
I liked the fanart of the characters so I ended up torrenting 6-9.5, started off with EoSD because I wanted to complete them in the right order.
