ASoIF is quite the opposite. It's still epic, mind you, but it's not high fantasy. It's realistic, as much as fantasy can hope to be, with real characters, who change drastically as you keep reading. And most of all, they're human. They're not perfect, they make mistakes. They're not knights in shining armour, or if they are, they will get killed for their foolish ideals. They are not immortal, there is no such thing as plot armour. Expect any of your favourite characters to die the moment you turn the page.

So yeah, it's worth giving it a shot.
