Bankruptcy filings are available to the public in the United States. Should be able to find their documents if this is true. That said, I imagine they should be able to sell Happiness 2 and Nukitashi given that they were near completion. Not sure about their Light Novel licenses though

>The visual novel community is tough to gauge in the west because through talks I have come to realize that this industry isn’t sustainable and perhaps shouldn’t even exist based on the fact that every game is released at a loss. This is why conventions and shows are so important to get some type of return. For us, it’s light novel and manga, they take about a month to localize and profit is seen after about a month on the market. On the other hand, visual novels take about six months to localize and we need about 600 sells to say that the release did pretty good.

I'm guessing it was a combination of poorly controlling costs and none of their titles doing all that remarkable. Their Steam releases had concurrent peaks of 65, 64, 42, 30, and 6, and more importantly none of them had long tails. Then they had Onii-Kiss and Yotsunoha never making it to Steam, and the latter of those likely did very poorly.

While other publishers have had their duds, they also have found some long term evergreen sellers that work to be reliable revenue sources to this day. Titles like Clannad, Nekopara, Umineko, Aokana, and Sanoba Witch all had higher concurrent users within the last 24 hours then Sol Press's all time high of 65 for Under One Wing.

Honestly, I don't see this niche little industry being around for too much longer. After MG is done with Rance, what big titles are there left to even look forward to? The vast majority of the big name eroge we've been coveting have been translated and released now, or they've been written off as "never going to get localized" for a variety of reasons. That, in combination with the sad truth of eroge dying in general, means that in 5 years there will only be moege and nukige to release, and, hey, I like a moege or a nukige once in awhile, but I think we can all agree they're pretty much the same exact shit most of the time.

>> No.36629958

Their discord is filled with people bitching about not having updates for their LN orders, with some people claiming it's been nearly two years since they purchased their physicals. No other major western Light Novel or manga publisher is having these issues even with the Kung Flu. I believe their PR guy said they were reeling since they couldn't find a printer for their books and were "looking for a solution." Regardless, they can't blame anyone if everyone else is managing.

>>36628972
I'm pretty sure it was kickstarter money that was keeping them alive, even though it now seems more like they were on life support. Guess what that means? If you supported any of their kickstarters, you aren't getting shit. Does this remind you of another company?

Hilarious that they'd say every title is released at a loss - theirs certainly did. It's clear they were in over their heads. The new JAST lead said that not a single one of their titles had ever lost them money. Sol Press may have had a good "long tail" title in Nukitashi had they managed to get it done in time. Wonder who's going to get it because there's no way that license doesn't interest every localizer in the scene.

>No other major western Light Novel or manga publisher is having these issues
Other publishers have been quite vocal about printing headaches in the industry between the current sky high demand and consolidation of the print industry, and it has caused delays and made second print runs very difficult. I could imagine it being difficult for a small struggling independent company without established connections finding adequate printing access, although I'm sure the current state of Sol Press hasn't helped them work through their issues.

>Sol Press may have had a good "long tail" title in Nukitashi had they managed to get it done in time. Wonder who's going to get it because there's no way that license doesn't interest every localizer in the scene.
The one potential issue for Nukitashi is that publishers may not expect to get a Steam release out of it, so it maybe less appealing for Nekonyan and Sekai then it is for Jast/DMM/MG. Nevertheless, it shouldn't have an issue finding a buyer if Sol Press is selling off assets.

>> No.36635317

Some people here are talking about some of these being in a stall to see if someone buys them out....

is that for real though? How much money could you get out of someone buying out your fantl though?

And who would buy it? The cartel, but how could they be sure they could land the license too?
They«d have to be sure they owned/could own the license before buying the translation right?

>> No.36635464

>>36635317
>How much money could you get out of someone buying out your fantl though?
That is always going to depend on how it is sold. Sometimes it can be packaged up with other assets to sweeten the deal for a set price or they can let people bid on it in an auction style.

>how could they be sure they could land the license too
It depends on the original contract. If they can sell on the licence itself that they got then there is no problem. If there are clauses that allow the original company they licenced from withdrawing it for what ever reason that is valid then of course there are big risks in buying up the translation.

>> No.36635901

Quof got $1200 for each of his shitty miel translations. You're looking at $2000-$3000 for your average short nukige and an excess of $15,000 for longer titles. The translators for muv-luv got paid ~$65,000 each for the trilogy

Things got pretty heated in the Sol Press discord a few hours ago. Their main PR guy apparently went invisible for a few days for his own sanity, and someone else showed up to answer some questions. The new guy claims he's been paid and implied others have as well, and that progress is still being made on their titles, obviously dismissing any bankruptcy rumors. Someone else popped in to share some messages from another Discord; It was from an editor of Nukitashi who claims he has not been paid because the contract states he'd only be paid when the title releases, which it obviously hasn't. New PR guy replies and says that worse case, the editor should be able to be compensated regardless of contract, perhaps by sending an invoice. Another guy shares a message from the same editor where he claims that he did send an invoice, roughly three months ago. New PR guy claims he can "always remind Mike" (I assume Xev) and that this should be done privately. Following this, there were more demands for Xev to come out and explain the situation, but Steiner arrived and told everyone that pressing the smaller staff won't do anything because they don't have any answers.

The most I can think of was dovac nuking her twitter again last month and that announcement about how they are totally working on their kickstarter scams

Fun Fact. JAST is Peter Payne's main business and J-List was just a side job.

Funny how it all turned out.

Is https://vndb.org/v18279 coming out this month?

Not that strange at all. There were quite a few VN publishers around the time JAST began getting into it but there were practically no japanese merch companies located in the west at the time. Hence why J-List did so well and their VN's did mediocre at best.

Couldn't help it, I was remembering the Maitetsu mess and all the other times he bitched in twitter and thought how he whines like a woman. And then my brain played a fast one on my hands.

The girl is a 10. The animation is a bit flan-esque, as usual, but Ok. It's one of the few nukige that almost made me fall asleep, even though I have an oneesama fetish. The writing isn't up to the rest of the work in quality, it is as bland as the protagonist.
Aside from her visuals, it has one great ntr scene where the sister does a handjob, in the train, next to his prospective girlfriend. That kind of redeemed an otherwise mediocre work.

What literature is required before reading Muramasa?

I'm asking unironically btw. Like how Subahibi is predicated on knowledge of Wittgenstein.

Nothing, Muramasa's philosophy is quite simple.

Yeah, it's yet another nukige ruined by a horribly boring relationship between the protagonist and heroine. There's just nothing there. Girl has to do all the work with a brick and it gets boring very quickly.
