I don't know how much you know Japanese, but once you get past the beginner stages the idea of learning words based on your level starts to make less and less sense - to me at least. you can be at a very high level, understanding a majority of what you watch/listen to/read, but still not know a handful of fairly common words.

what I do is a mix of learning words that seem important and words that appear often in what I immerse in. by important words I mean common words. if you have the anime & jdrama frequency dictionary with yomichan you can see which words (based on the dictionary) are the most common. obviously, the more common a word is the more likely you'll see it, so as a general rule you should probably learn them. but there may also be less common words in *general* for Japanese, but words that are common in what you immerse in - you should want to learn those too. that's my advice at least.

After a little over three months, I've finally finished the Core2.3k deck. It took a solid 20 words a day to get through the whole thing in a reasonable amount of time, and there were definitely several days where I was running on fumes and questioning why I was forcing my brain to memorize the name of a branch of the Japanese government that changed its name two decades ago. It was hard but ultimately worth the effort.
I started following the animecards.site protocol at the beginning of summer after watching a random Matt vs. Japan video where he bashed anime cards in favor of some astral projection coffee enema Anki plugin. I haven't actually tried that plugin, but I have been mining in between chipping away at the core deck. My mining deck is getting close to 400 words, and I have come to the conclusion that anime cards really do have a sort of 不思議なpower.
Thank you to everyone on here for being so helpful and kind and for always sharing all your resources freely and not hiding them behind paywalls and Patreons. It's been a really fun and rewarding experience so far, and I look forward to continuing to learn Japanese together in the future.

It's nothing about"anime cards" in particular. It's well known that the brain associates words with images, audio and memories, not other words.
