What’s your favorite fan game? Touhou Puppet Dance Performance left quite an impression on me, it’s by far my favorite. Being a huge Etrian Odyssey fan I thought I’d like Labyrinth of Touhou but it just doesn’t click with me, something about it feels off. Luna Nights is amazing but quite short. Spell Bubble is quite fun in short bursts as well.

What’s your favorite fangame? Share recommendations, English translation wishlists, game news, announcements, etc.

Hollow Song of Bird is fun, mechanics are interesting, music is fantastic, and I love my girlfriend General Set.
Also any game with playable Kaguya is a good game.

Touhou PDP is a game I'm always interested in playing but I think I've been too conditioned by playing Pokemon styled games on handheld, so for now it's just sticking to romhacks.

i have played a bit of maiden was, and i know 1-2 not sure about 3 or if it had the same packed problem like 4. but when 4 was finally being worked on they announced the 1-4 pack and all(i think they were 2 left) translators agreed to wait till it arrived.
There are a blog with the entire 4 game translated and a walkthrough, should not be hard to find.
i really wanted to do a complet playthrough when it all was translated and i help where i could, but it has been years and i have completely lost touch of where the project is most likely in a limbo.
touhou puppet play gets a bit jank in the johto region, i still completed it, or at least that i knew i could do.

Blooming Chaos is pretty enjoyable and charming, and has a massive cast of character. It's not deep but it's good arcade fun. Downsides are the semi-awkward translation (which they did improve), the fact that Mystia is supposed to be playable and technically is but is delayed, and the DLC. Still though the cast of 2hus that are usually sidelined being playable makes it charming.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1727000/YuuYuu_Jiteki_no_Yuukarin/

YuuYuu Jiteki no Yuukarin also just came out on Steam, and if you played it at launch, it's gotten some updates including news levels and bosses. Very much worth playing if you like platformers like DKC, Yoshi's Island, Kirby, and Yuuka.

I'm on the exact same boat as you, dlc and all
the playable characters are definitely this game's strong point, they have a great amount with both popular and wacky picks with cool mechanics to make them feel different
I've only finished the "story" dungeons and tried boss rush and unrestrained so my opinions are likely to change, but it feels like enemies could do with just a bit more variety, whether it's enemy types or more modifiers beyond elite status (stuff like leaving a short-lived fire trail behind, mana drain, or have confuse not only exist in that one puzzle room afaik, gigantism mode seems like it'll do good to sate this particular hiccup)
the equipment system with clothing is really cool, that's another plus to the design
having played stuff like noita, diablo, and elona for many hours I guess I kind of wish some of those elements carried over, but the game really has a fantastic base
this is already way too long, I love the bosses even if they melt with a half-leveled character and I wish the devs the best of luck in any future endeavors, now to try classic rogue and eat all my words

The full version of Udongein X (Mega Man X like fan-game) got released today. I had a lot of fun with the demo, so I've been looking forward to this.
Saki was surprisingly easy (got her like 5th try), but I might have improved since playing the demo. When playing the demo, I was often stuck for hours on a single boss, so I'm not unhappy with this. Her stage was really cool, too.

This was a lot of fun. I really like the feeling of dashing through the stages.
Actual spoilers:
It was interesting to play without the dash and wall-jumps in the final stage. This was basically how I played the game when I played it the first time, but now that I've learned the game better, it's unbearable to not have the dash. It gave me a nice perspective of the journey I've made, and I loved it.
I'd guess the Normal mode difficulty has been reduced compared to the demo: I was able to beat all the bosses in a few (<10) tries, except the final boss which took a few more tries (but nothing crazy). Stage enemies seem less tanky, too, which is nice since I always just skipped the tanky ones in the demo, but now killing is a more attractive option. I like the balancing changes.
I also like how attacks from the official games have been adopted to the new format: it's like I'm fighting these characters in a 2D platformer, and not just Mega Man bosses with Touhou skins.

Favorite boss:
Reimu. I love her animation while she waits to "baseball" the orb. I was happy to see Reisen II show up, too. Her fight was great, cinematically.

Shoot Shoot Nitori, Patchcon, Concealed the Conclusion (drama bomb), Koumajou Densetsu (touhouvania, Laser Reimu, Suwapyon, Remidoki.

And I think the most noteworthy of all would be Touhou Hack & Slash. Not to be confused with Treasure Hunter G.
Hack & Slash is the actual Diablo clone and has netplay. So if you've got a buddy to kill a few hours with that can be really fun.

The winner:
- Gensou Shoujo Taisen - No contest, the best fangame series in existence, not just in Touhou. Even without Touhou bias this is an amazing game series, especially 3 and 4.

Other Contenders:
Puppet Dance Performance - A better pokemon game than newer pokemon games.
Labyrinth of Touhou 2 - Very deep and very difficult dungeon crawler RPG, but lots of grinding.
Touhou Soccer 2 - A surprisingly very addictive and indepth game. You know its good when someone has an almost 300 page pdf guide written about it.

Other good games:
Luna Nights - Polished and very short metroidvania.
Blooming Chaos 2 - Cheesy and janky, but very fun roguelite.
Patchcon - One of my go to time wasters in general, and a fun tower defense-ish game.
Strawberry Bose games - They're all good, some of them RPGs some more parody games.
Tenjou no Tempest - Good and very flashy action sidescroller.
Scarlet Curiosity - Good Ys clone, not much else to say
Koumajou Densetsu - Difficult and "high budget" metroidvania, amazing artstyle and a lot of effort put into it.
Underrated/Hidden Gems:
TouDod (Touhou Dodgeball) - Incredibly simple but really fun game, another one of my go-to time wasters.
TouhouVS - A GvG type game similar to Sky Arena, it's pretty fun
Mugen Nise Sato - A pretty good Valkyrie Profile clone
Remifura Supirittsu - A megaman clone featuring Flan and Remi, and not a bad one.

There's so much fangames I've played I don't even remember all of them. There's also some pretty good ones already mentioned here like Treasure Hunter G.

Just got my Udongein X Lunatic clear!
Lunatic is a bit broken, but Reisen's got the tools to deal with it. The only boss that gave me trouble once I had my "kit" was Mokou. I want to jump over her when she corners me, but she'd often punish that with her anti-air attack. In hindsight, I should probably wait in the corner until she does a safe attack, but I'm not sure I'd be able to react to her dash if I don't put some distance between. Her survival isn't easy, either, but it wasn't the bottleneck for me.
Is there a consensus about the easiest bosses to do early, before getting upgrades? I did Seija, Saki and Yuugi, and that was alright, I guess, but not terribly easy.

Nope, but I've played all 4. 4 actually has a translation for it almost as complete as 3's.
I swear Sanbondo should just put Complete Box on Steam and have someone do the translation officially, so that he doesn't have to be triggered from autist fans anymore.

Anyways GST is pretty insane, especially for a fangame. It has EVERY single character from Touhou 6 - 12 playable, including some manga characters and PC-98 characters. I believe it has around 77 playable characters in total, not counting transformed characters and the Complete Box characters. Not like these characters are copy-pasted or lazily done either, they all have unique animations, several attacks, and some of them have very different gameplay.
It has literally hundreds of Touhou arranges, and some characters have several arranges just for her own. Think Koishi in 4 has like 6 different arranges, and most of them come from one stage. I also love how each Prismriver sister gets their own arrange focusing on their instrument, and then when combined into one unit they have an arrange with all three instruments.
It actually has a pretty decent story for a fangame, and when it shines its really good. Some of the characters are a bit too nice for plot reasons and some are the "old-fashioned" interpretations of the characters (ex. Nitori), but none of them outside of the Aki sisters are too meme.
It's also pretty decently long, has quite a bit of customization options, and the vast majority of the stages and boss battles are done well. It's pretty absurd that it's a fangame, it's basically the fangame equivalent of Maikaze.

Does anyone like the Fushigi no Gensokyo series? There are so many games, but the only one that's gotten officially translated is Tokyo Genso Wanderer. I've personally only played that one and Miracle Party, but I wonder if the other games are worth it. I don't even mind shelling up money for them on dlsite. So far, I gotta say Miracle Party is my favorite because it focuses on the Moriya shrine and the events are just plain fun. It's way more punishing than Genso Wanderer though. First game is by the Disappearing of Gensokyo devs and seems pretty exciting for a TD. According to the Steam description: "In Touhou Monster TD, you can not only control the character to go anywhere in the TD world, but also jump everywhere, build everywhere, and carry around the combat unit."
The second game seems like a restaurant sim: it is super cute and was advertised on the Touhou World Cup, but I have no idea what the actual gameplay is like and it doesn't have English (but some early access reviews claim that it's playable anyway thanks to the intuitive interface).

I just played through the Touhou Monster TD's campaign on Normal over the course the an evening and a morning (8h total). It's alright.
I'm gonna compare it to Gensokyo Defenders (the other notable Touhou TD game that I've played):
- Unlike Gensokyo Defenders (GD), Touhou Monster TD (THMD) doesn't require you to dodge bullets with your character, so being able to jump is mostly a gimmick.
- Reimu and Youmu are the playable characters, each with 2 stronger attacks with cooldowns and a normal attack that uses a meter (that slowly refills by itself or by picking up a somewhat rare enemy drop). Unlike GD, you're not likely to be able to defend a lane or two indefinitely without towers, since the attack meter takes a long time to recharge and is quickly depleted if you attack indiscriminately.
- The towers are more complicated than in GD, and gain new abilities (all passive) when you level them up. However, you cannot maze or otherwise build on the path of the enemy.
- As in GD, you gain 1-3 stars by completing a level. Unlike GD, you don't need to defend perfectly to get 3 stars (finishing with 15/20 lives is enough). The stars are used to buy upgrades in a tree (unlike GD, where each tower is upgraded). As in GD, you can reallocate and spend your points freely.
- The game on Normal is too easy. I was able to finish the first 85% of the campaign by mostly spamming good all-around towers. The last few levels made me appreciate the game more, since it forced me to use a wider range of tools.
- Unlike GD, there is little variety in the stages. Thus, once you find a strategy you like, you'll be able to reuse it on most stages.
- Instead, each stage has a challenge difficulty (unlocked by beating the stage) that restrict you to only use certain towers. These are short (1 "elite wave" only), and grant you a star if you complete them.
- The art is cute, but I had some problems with textures flickering (most notably, faces). Some of the environments are beautiful, too, but it's sometimes hard to discern what paths the enemies are going to take. The game's solution to this is to display a glowy effect outlining the enemy paths at the start of each wave, but the maps are too big so you'll often not be able to see everything you need. It's not too bad, since the enemy spawn points for the upcoming wave are highlighted separately, but you often want to build away from the enemy spawn.
- The translation is OK but sloppy. There are plenty of typos, two untranslated mouse-over tooltips (that are not important, but show in up every level), one misleading/wrong upgrade description. Apart from these issues, it's above the average Chinese fan-games with an English translation done by the devs themselves.
- The story is presented through animated comic-style panels. It looks good, and doesn't overstay its welcome.

Overall, it's an average TD and hard to recommend over GD (which is an excellent TD). The main thing TMTD has over GD is that it looks nicer, and it's new. I'm gonna try to play through the game again on Lunatic to see how that goes.

The game is, indeed, surprisingly playable without knowing Chinese since the orders you receive are iconographic. It gets a little problematic when you get to custom orders though since you will have to use the tags. And you will also miss on the story.

You can rejoice though, as the developer has indeed announced that an English translation is on the way :

That being said, I don't think they've done anything to attract negative attention from their government, and it's not an online game, so the more concrete regulations don't apply.

It's a "Metroidvania", fairly short but still long enough to be worth a download. I'm 3 hours in and at what I think is the last boss.
The controls uses way too many buttons for my brain to handle, and when the game gets hectic, I keep pressing tab when I want to press shift, and also space when I want to press 'z', and vice versa. I dunno why I am like this.

On their website you can find an updated plugin and discord you can find something to help you align your models but you would want to use the 2.79b version of blender if you dont want to have any problems which I had a ton of. I found the models by just browsing the internet, If you want to use mmd models you are going to need a plugin for blender.
It took me a good 24 hours to sort out all the problems I was having, this was also a first for using blender at all for me lole.

There is a new "Hakurei Dennou Tekiyukai EXTRA" coming up soon. It's an online event to showcase fan games (free games or demos of non-free games are welcome).
The previous events have had everything from high-quality games like "Thunder Faith" (the first game by Yuyusansan, who made Ikusaaaaaaaaan!), to unfinished flash-tier games.
Guide on how to submit your game:
https://hakudenkai.games/en/circle-guide/

The actual event starts the 29th of November (running for two weeks), but the registration closes a week before that. See the link for details.

I bought Gensokyo Defenders and Touhou Ibunseki today.
The former was recommended earlier in this thread, but what do people think of the latter?

Uh, come again? Better? I'll take your word on it.

They're only good to pass time based on the amount of dialogue. It's boring as shit if there are no lines. Era K doesn't suffer from this as much however.

There is Suwa Moriya 64, but it's an acquired taste. It's basically the same two levels recycled over and over but with coins ("rings") in different locations, and you have to grab coins to get more time, with the goal being to grab every coin and reach the goal before the timer runs out.
If you enjoy just jumping around in Super Mario 64, without much exploration, it could be fun for you, but it's not a full game in terms of content.
The controls also have an unintuitive feature: basically, to jump out of your dive attack, you need to press jump before you land (it buffers your jump inputs, so you can press jump before landing to instantly jump again). The unintuitive part is that if you do the dive attack without buffering your next jump like this, you'll be stuck in a slow dive-slide state that you can't jump out from. Apart from this, the controls are good and similar to Mario 64, except there is no wall-jump.

Sounds good enough to mess around, do you think it will ever be finished or is it an abandoned project?

>> No.37058601

It's an actual finished game, but it was a jam game made in 3 days or so, so the scope of the project is small by design.
It is completely open source, though, so someone could make more content for it if they wanted to. I'm thinking about using it as a basis for a 3D project of my own, since I want to learn to do 3D things: with wall jumping and a way to exit the dive-slide state, it'd be a very solid base for a 3D platformer. The chibi low-poly model is really cute, too, and should be simple to adapt into other characters even for someone with minimal artistic skills (like me).

Yup
Can’t figure out how to impregnate though... is there a message that will play? I think I have the right settings, it says impreg is off by default but I have it turned off... so it should work?

Do people on here still play/remember Age of Ethanols? I remember having a blast with it back in the /v/ soku days

I've see people post about once in a while, so it's remember (but I've never played it myself).

>but I have it turned off
You mean you have it turned on? Because it needs to be on.
That aside, the chances for impregnation are extremely low unless you do it with thick semen on dangerous days.
When you're successful (and when you're not) a message should appear after you go to sleep, but I think you need the menstrual cycle visualization skill (which you get from the 5th achievement in page 4/7) for it .
If you want more details you can enable "display detailed pregnancy chances" on the cheat menu you access by clicking on the stars on the options menu.
