Right. So I'm thinking about starting FSN. And before that, I'm just wondering, how is it compared to the anime? Is it going to be pretty much just like watching the show except for added monologue and descriptions and such? Or are the differences significant enough to keep one reading?

It's been too long since I saw the FSN animu for me to remember the relative quality of the VN and it, but at least the VN will have new content. The Fate route is different, and UBW and HF routes are completely new content for you. So go for it.

A word of warning though, FSN is a hell of a slow read. All three routes, all bad ends, took me exactly 100 hours according to the game's own timer.

Double clicking doesn't do anything other than show the next sentence twice really fast. Rolling the scrollwheel also just shows the next sentence.

Maybe there is an option for Tsukihime style screen-of-text view hidden there somewhere but I sure can't find it.

It's worth playing the game, even after watching the anime. Sure you don't have all the surprise (but if your are on 4chan, everything must have already been spoiled...), but I think both are worth watching.

The game is way more detailed than the anime, so you should watch it first.
