ZUN's art is weird in a way that against all logic it seems to just get worse and worse after PCB. But Touhou is shooter series, so art doesn't matter that much.
Ryukishi's stuff is bad. But when you think about it, that makes sense. On Higurashi horrible things keep happening to characters that look horrible. But at least the art stays the same during entire series, so you get used to it.
...I haven't played KEY's stuff yet.

I am a really big fan of genocidekitten's works. A lot of people do not seem to like it though.

Ageed, I love Genocide Kitten. But there's lots of reasons to not like them, like:
1. They're really inspired by western comics.
2. Their stuff is not cute. Sometimes it's just plain creepy.
But no way how you look at it, their art is not bad. I Can't Wait Until Night had some of best shading I've yet seen on Touhou stuff.

That's really the main reason I like it, the fact that it's not cute but infact, as you say, is creepy (apart from a few pictures). It makes it pretty distinct when compared with other Touhou fanart.
I suppose it is pretty "Western" as well, but the though had never really crossed my mind until just now.
