To me, it's just a matter of their role in a narrative.
A pet gerbil is to be loved and taken care of, while a sewer rat should be exterminated as a bringer of dirt and disease, even though they're both small furry rodents.
I can appreciate both family friendly stuff and some degree of abuse, but only if I think the Yukkuri deserved it.
I find works from Takumi and Kiriraitaa abhorrent, just to name some prominent examples, because they often involve abuse of cute little yus whose only mistake was running into an abusive anon. On the other hand, there's something cathartic about seeing a creature weaker than an ant yet host to an ego the size of the moon face cruel reality.

No, miss human won't give sweet-sweets and drop dead just because you told her to.
No, puff-puffing at the ground won't instantly make it sprout vegetables for you to it.
No, you absolutely deserve any punishment you get from invading someone's house and murdering their pet yu, even if you declared that it's your easy place now.

I used to not mind abuse stories, but now I feel as if it's become a bit much, and there's very much a clear escalation of abuse, as folks have become bored with just using a shithead strawman to justify it.

It seems far more mean-spirited. Art depicting reverse farm raiding, with Humans invading the little farms of presumably good Yukkuri because some shithead herd raided someone else's, sonewhere else.

Or burning a baby Yu's feet because it just poo'd wherever because it hadn't been potty trained, an oversight admitted by the narrator.

Or the plethora ot shop-owner stories where they blatantly rob a badged Yu when it's making an effort to pay the listed price of goods, whether by force or simply increasing the prices unduly.

I think that's why I no longer enjoy abuse works anymore - it's just becoming too much and the punishment seems to far outstrip the indiscretion, if the author/artist even bothers to provide any justification at all and not simply punish it for the crime or simply existing.

Embrace true abuse. The suffering is even better when they don't deserve it, to me. Sometimes life is just cruel, and I can admit I get a sick pleasure out of seeing the yu's experience horrible things. I love Kiriraitaa's works because of the scenarios he creates and the types of abuse he uses. Takumi makes incredibly beautiful art but has very generic abuse methods, and rather uninspired plots to his scenarios. Not to mention how he sucks at actually finishing his stories.
