>If we wanted to read something as long as YU-NO or as ugly as Sharin no Kuni, we'd read an actual book. Because, you know, no eroge story is as good as real literature, no matter how many crazed otaku try to tell you otherwise. So we'd rather do stuff that's shiny. Yay for minori!

I read visual novels because i have a vapid sense of imagination.

Well, I wouldn't call Fate/Stay Night a masterpiece of modern literature, but it's far better than some books I've read, so I'd say it's as good as "real" literature.

FACT: 10% of all eroges are better than 90% of all books.

Personally, I feel that the visual novel medium could theoretically be a better medium for "telling a story" than a book. You have all the advantages of a book, but at the same time you have an added OST and backgrounds which can do great things to enhance the story.

Not saying though that eroge has succeeded in this, just looking at what could be done with the medium.

>> No.3595522

>>3595462
Fate stay is like a really good YA book. Seriously, they should cut the porn, put it on trees, and It'll be the best YA book since Golden Compass.

Comparing any pop media to great literature is basically just a tool of trolls, but that doesn't mean that pop media can't be good on its own terms. I would say that the quality of the VNs i've read ranks up with the better sf/fantasy stuff.

Not saying though that modern day visual novels have succeeded in this, as I personally believe that few visual novels are even close to being as good as some of the best books.

I would love to force a bunch of literary professors to play through something like F/SN

I agree with the OST part. The visual part should be done by the reader.

At best, an above average fantasy book that would need to come out in 10 installments or so.
VN Viewpoint, focus, plus the use of visuals and music makes such comparisons stupid in the first place.

You get different things from a book, and different ones from a Vn.

Just see how different F/Sn and Zero are.

>> No.3595595

I think more VNs should be done like Umineko/Planetarian/Higurashi, one story without choices that are only in VN form to take advantage of the strengths of the medium. Not saying all things should be like this obviously, but if you are focusing on one story instead of scenarios, it is likely that single story will turn out better, and be literally a audio/visual novel.

>>3595560
But that would be pointless, even Nasu said it's shit.

>> No.3595603

Well, I liked how F/SN made use of the routes. It's all sort of one story, even though the routes are just differing events.

>> No.3595666

>>3595603
As said, not all things. F/SN does it well, Ever17 uses it to build up for the amazing Coco route, many other games use well made routes as well.

>> No.3596462

Still, some VN just go with a DEEP plot so they can fit as many H scenes as possible nonsensically, some are just stupid, Cross Channel had the worst paced H scenes ppacing I've ever seen in harems they were ''ok let's have sex since I'm bored'', plainly stupid
