I'm finally gonna start playing Touhou Project. So I have a few questions:

1. Which game would be best to start from, i.e. the easiest because I suck at bullet hell games.

2. Controller or keyboard?

3. Any general tips.

This thread again.

1. PCB or IN.
2. Pad, if you have a good one.
3. Don't post on /jp/ about it until you're at least respectably good, save the danmaku threads.

>> No.3591617

Easiest is probably Imperishable Night, just don't pick Reimu/Yukari or you won't learn proper bomb timing.

If you don't mind not being able to see the hitbox, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is probably a good starter too.

Also keyboard

>> No.3591632

1. Easiest is probably Imperishable Night but I would recommend starting with PCB normal or EoSD easy modo (yeah, yeah).
2. Keyboard.
3. Hold shift for focused movement, bomb with X when you're in trouble, have fun.

>> No.3591638

They're all the fucking same, just play SA. I don't know why people keep recommending PCB to start with, as if starting with anything else will somehow change a thing.

>> No.3591666

1. Any of them is fine

3. Watch a replay of the one you want to play, it'll help you get an idea of the hitbox.

1.PCB (SakuyaA, slowmodo)
2.Keyboard in my opinion
3.Don't try to save bombs, otherwise you will just die and lose all of them

>> No.3591673

I didn't want to make a thread about this, so I'll ask here; PCB, IN, and EoSD are often recommended, and I started out with them. For some reason, I can manage normal MoF(ReimuA), easy SA and UFO, but I can't beat the former 3 on easy mode.
IMO, MoF is the easiest, but it's never recommended; is that because of the bombing?

>> No.3591682

PCB is best because once you can get past Youmu on normal, the big fun begins.

>> No.3591683

PCB Normal or MoF Normal
Keyboard
Watch a replay, both PCB and MoF Normal are pretty damn easy. Never play IN (especially Border Team) until you learn to deathbomb.

>> No.3591687

1. Imperishable Night.

2. Keyboard. You have to do a lot of right-left tap dodging to do, which simply doesn't work as fast with a controller. And since you're pretty much going to hold the shoot button the entire game, and focus the other half, a keyboard is easier on the fingers.

3. Observe the patterns, predict the bullet paths. A very hard looking situation can often be dodged by barely moving at all. Also, have that trigger finger on the bomb button.

>> No.3591725

>>3591673
On PCB, with SakuyaA you have so many bombs and lives that you can pretty much 1cc Lunatic without knowing how to get past Stage 1 if you just bomb liberally. I'd know because that's precisely what I did. Fucking Letty and Winter Sign.

I don't remember IN Easy, but I know GIL got to Stage 4 literally without moving at all. Just move up to Normal a bit and then go down, perhaps? Same goes for EoSD.

It's easier to go from more inconvenient to more convenient. Whenever I return to EoSD and PCB I find the inability to auto-collect from POC when under full power quite a hassle. Plus no bomb-spamming through stages.

I suppoes UFO could be played first (or anytime), it's so far-removed from the other Windows Touhou shmups anyway.

1: Try them all and play whichever is the most fun for you.

3: Hold shift for focused movement.

>> No.3594062

1. Touhou 1 (Highly Responsive to Prayers), its has much simpler movement, and simpler patterns. Unlike the rest of the series, there is no vertical movement, only horizontal, and there are far fewer bullets on screen at once.

2. Arcade stick or keyboard only. There are only 8 directions, and modern controller analog sticks do not translate well, having a full range for universal motion. A D-pad can also be awkward to use, since you will often make jerking type motions. Both of these things an arcade stick handles well. Few buttons are also required, making the large buttons on arcade sticks quite appropriate. Keyboard also works, but it less desirable.

3. Easy mode is designed for school aged kids. Normal for someone who needs slightly more challenge. The games are designed to be beaten while drunk (age above 20) on hard mode, but lunatic mode is designed to be beatable only when sober.

>> No.3594070

1. Play whatever game has your favorite boss in it. If your favorite boss is someone who appears in multiple games (Cirno, for example) then flip a coin between those two.

2. Try both a keyboard and a controller and use whichever feels more natural to you. People will swear by whatever they choose to use, and there is really no right answer.

3. If you thought you were good at video games, be prepared to have your ego destroyed. That is perfectly natural. Perseverance is a virtue here.

Easy is for people to be able to beat the game, even if they have no skills at games and completely lack hand-eye coordination. It can not be practiced on, the difficult spell cards and shots are all removed.

If you plan to improve, you must start on normal mode, as it will bear some semblance to the harder modes.

The first few levels really aren't that difficult on normal. If you get used to things being too easy, you're just going to feel like you hit a wall when you move up in difficulty.

One problem with easy mode is they remove some bullets that guide you in normal mode. With these bullets removed, you gravitate towards different spots due to bullets removed, and end up trapped later on.

>Another questions :

- Wikipedia says there're 5 titles of Touhou games are in PC-98, and I have to use emulator (I'm not really familiar with emulator) to play it.
Should I just skip the PC-98 titles (Lotus Land Story , Mystic Square) and go straight to Windows games (The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil) ?

- Should I play Touhou by order ? Like "The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil" first, "Perfect Cherry Blossom" second, etc.

- Is it translated ?

Thanks in advance.

Yes

It doesn't really matter, but most people suggest starting with Perfect Cherry Blossom or Imperishable Night. Scarlet Devil is good, but it's age shows.

Most of the windows games have translations.

There's nothing wrong with the older PC-98 games, but I think the quality takes a big jump at EoSD.

I'd play Embodiment of Scarlet Devil first myself. I like how in that game you continue from where you left off when you use a continue instead of the beginning of the level. I can't remember if Perfect Cherry Blossom is like this, but I think it's harder anyway.

Play the PC-98s later but be sure to play them. The music is totally ballin and the boss fights are fun in a way that's different from the later games.

They are also easier on normal mode so they shouldn't take you very long to 1cc if you've done one of the windows games. Except for the very first one which is way too hard to 1cc to worry about, unless you really like clunky danmaku breakout.
