Some people do enjoy hugging their dolls, others will sit and watch tv with them, sit with them while crafting, or even take photos of them performing the same hobbies as their owner in miniature. I have heard of some people falling asleep with their dolls as well, but usually in the vein of "I'm so glad nothing happened" -- vinyl and resin dolls are pretty sturdy overall, but delicate parts like fingers can be damaged, paint jobs can wind up scratched, and so on.

I've found that each person is drawn to this hobby for a different reason- some view it as a creative outlet and sew clothes for them to wear or use them as photo props. Others enjoy the collecting aspect and seek out rare and discontinued dolls for their collections. Some just enjoy having them around like poseable figurines that look cute in the background of their day-to-day life. There are many different ways to be a doll anon.

I'm not Australian, so I don't know the full extent of the effects, but I do know that no one even bothers to ship dolls under 150cm there.

It's the same with those of us who go after the silicone variety of dolls, just with one extra purpose. Personally, I like cuddling. I've spent the past several years cuddling plushies, and now I want something a bit more substantive. It's good to know that some of these dolls can be cuddled too, because they are very beautiful, and they just sort of invoke that sense of "must hug/protect", y'know?

I'd say /ona/'s a decent enough thread for it thus far, since it can be slow enough already. I've been seeing discussions of them on other boards though, so maybe I could find a place somewhere on this site that's ideal for discussion just of those dolls.

And yes, full size dolls can be somewhat heavy. But that's part of the nice thing about them. They have substance and can feel like another person.

Don't buy parts off ali, they're all bootlegs and will be made of resin or plastic.

I'm not as familiar with European sellers, but dolls.moe carries dolls and parts, and mikiyochii.de has a lot of accessories and does faceups. Pure Neemo were my entry into this hobby, but 1/6 parabox/obitsu dolls are also quite lovely. Happy shopping anon.
