That's probably SL Banetsu Monogatari, it runs between Aizu-Wakamatsu and Niigata. They still operate it but it runs on the Banetsu Saisen which is a different line from the one that links Wakamatsu and Yunokami so it wouldn't reach there even if Wakamatsu wasn't the eastern terminus

Toritetsu have a very bad reputation in Japan because of cases where people have done things like scale fences around stations, which causes the entire line to be shut down due for safety reasons, making people late for work. I've seen signs along tracks that specifically say "do not climb to take photographs"

The suicide forest was pretty cool. Very easy to walk the trails on account of all the lava rock in the ground, very quiet, and very cool even in the dead-ass heat of summer. Apparently all the suiciding goes on deeper into the forest, but I didn't want to venture off too far on my own. You can just barely get the idea through the thick layer of moss on the ground that as soon as you step off the trail it gets extremely treacherous, and I didn't want to break my fucking leg in the woods by myself.

I went through some old, now closed and forbidden route. No sinking, but it was not maintained with a lot of fallen trees on the way and grass at some points. Plus I started during sunset and then actually walked the whole way back after the sun was gone. That was a bit stupid.

Yeah, the other thing is that there were very few landmarks and the place is absolutely enormous with no reception whatsoever, so it seemed very easy to get lost. I saw a couple of lines like these where it looked like people going off the trail came prepared to make sure they could get back to it.

Thing is the forest seems very famous outside of Japan, but not as famous in Japan, except some circles. Or maybe they have heard of it, but until you explain it a bit better, it doesn't click for them. Even for the local people. At the end of the day it is probably like a couple of people a year enter with the intention to die. It is not like going in nature to die is a new thing, special to Japan. Probably Western media just makes it worse by making a big deal out of it.
