Is there a good resource for studying radicals or kanji's composition thereof? I'd like to be able to guess the meaning (and sometimes pronunciation) of kanji based on the way they are written, e.g. 森.
I've found some resources for Chinese, but I'd prefer a Japanese-specific one.

i almost failed english because the sparknotes were too hard for me to read. reading english is very hard for me because i can't read big paragraphs without zoning out

but ironically i did passable on the reading section of the SAT because it doesn't actually test reading comprehension, the optimal strategy is to cherry pick and skip sentences

finished tokyo ghoul re

there were about 50 characters too many. maybe more. this could have been really good if the story was tighter instead of the convoluted mess it turned out to be. i could barely remember who half the characters when they were being listed during the ending

the biggest problem is that it tries to make you sympathize with the ghouls but instead of making it so that they are reluctant to kill people but do it cause they have to, most of them fuckin love doing it and are sadistic monsters. and those same characters like gourmet and naki end up working with the humans at the end, just had to lol at that.

then to further try to balance it out the investigators are also written in such a way that you are meant to hate them and further empathize with the ghouls but logically you can't because they're killing human-eating sadistic monsters at the end of the day.

it's a real shame, there are a lot of cool elements and worldbuilding that get bogged down at the end by incompetent writing. and despite all this i couldnt stop reading it and i cant figure out why. i guess i just love body horror and monsters that much.

Chances are, it's mostly that your methodology is bad. I tried to learn Kanji for years by banging my head against flashcards and hoping they'd stick before I figured out that learning them by radicals with mnemonics while reading trashy light novels for half an hour a day to help the associations stick was a million times easier. I could have done it all along if I actually bothered asking myself how the material might be broken down in a sensible way.

TL;DR: If you tell yourself you're stupid, you'll stop looking for efficient solutions to problems, which gimps your learning ability.

Ideally, you should take a university-level course and work through Genki 1&2 in a structured setting. If that isn't possible, find a community college that has a Japanese course, work through one or two exercises from the work book every week, and ask the teacher to go over it with you after class. Learning grammar through self-study from a book that doesn't even have exercises (for the most part) is not going to give you the results you're hoping for unless you're prodigy-tier intelligent, and even if you are, it would still be pointlessly inefficient.

Video games all feel like they're made off the same template with slightly different looking character designs.

Last weekend I went on a trip to several towns in Michoacan (central Mexico), and all of the churches, markets, town squares, etc. looked like stuff I'd all seen elsewhere throughout the country and even in Southern Europe and shit. It all feels like it flows from the same fountain.
I sometimes wonder if I should just spend a year looking at a white wall and do absolutely nothing so I can start trying to get my creative juices flowing, but I doubt that'd work. Maybe it'd just weaken them instead. personlly never used ocr but games and comics for kids tend to have furigana so you can lookup unknown kanji fast. i use the jisho radical dictionary to look up unannotated kanji. yeah dragonball is really easy although i was super slow at the beginning because i couldnt figure out the regional accents everybody has. but after a few volumes it started to make more intuitive sense and read a lot faster. the worst is stuff like わりぃ (悪い) where you just have to already know the word to understand it, although you can usually find a japanese entry pointing to the real word by googling word + とは.

Deepl would be a decent alternative to GoogleTranslate if only it limited itself to translating verbatim. They parse sentences slightly more accurately than the other machine translators. I booked my vaccination in Japanese!

I'm feeling very proud of myself. I am really slow at learning Japanese and always shy away from phones. Even phone calls in English make me uncomfortable.

However, needs must so I just did it. I made a phone call. After 15 minutes with a very patient Japanese lady. I managed to book it my vaccinations.

It wasn't exactly Everest. However, it's nice to sometimes be reminded that any progress is good progress.
