No one plays the game. If you like bullet hells, there are other games more challenging than touhou. If you want to know the story, you should go to wikis. Those dialogs ingame requires tons of explanations on their references so you won't understand anyway.

Just get yourself some hentais, find a doujin circle you like, learn story from MMDs and fandoms. That's a normal learning curve for your newhous.

I need to make a correction on this. Find MMDs and fandoms that interests you, and google the shit out of the unfamiliar characters.

If you want to try out the games, always start with Touhou 8 IN. You should *NOT* start on EoSD. When you are looking for IN, get the latest English patch. There are two English patches for IN, the former one's translation is absolute shit. If you find your IN game's characters speaking in the same tone as I do, that means you've got the wrong one.

Also, enjoy hentais! Touhou-related hentais are endless.

Been on 4chan since 04 and saw the birth of this board, but never got into 2hu because the culture seemed to have a steep barrier of entry even back in the day. But after watching a bunch of vtubers they seem to love 2hus and vocaloid, and they piqued my interest. I like the fan music built around the culture, but where do you even start consuming it? I used to watch your old friend Sion (Yeah, that faggot) during his 2hu sundays streams to give me a perspective but that nigger hasn't been streaming for weeks.

Personally I started with 6 Embodiment of Scarlet Devil because it's the start of current touhou's plot (games before are rarely ever mentioned lorewise), but as a newhou you'll most likely get filtered hard by the difficulty since you can't get the good ending on easy mode.
So best start with 8 Imperishable Night since it's rather easy literally speaking.

Honestly even back then you'd be hard pressed to keep up with all the media.
It's just my opinion friend, I'm mostly nostalgic over the old albums and it's never too late to enjoy them.
You should also take note of the artists who work with different circles as opposed to just one. Collabs tend to be good, of course I can't name any right now.

Eosd isn't hard, it's just crap. Turbo speed unless you find out and hunt down a v sync patch, no hit box, ton of rng in bullet patterns. Not to mention the subjective points like the worst of the worst of ZUNart or the music sounding very dated.
Its only saving grace is that it's a pure bullet hell without any gimmicks. Just you, your shots and your bombs. Nothing else.

Not him but I like the idea of EoSD being the first game cause that way you won't get to experience anything worse than that in terms of...well, almost everything. From something simple to even start the game properly, to the lack of QoL features the later entries have, at least you won't have to worry about anything like that once you're done with it.
But at the same time I can see why people would want to recommend some of the other popular entry points instead. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter that much, if someone liked one game the urge to check another one will eventually be there.

That's not the issue. The problem is that EoSD will run at many times its normal speed on many modern systems unless you patch it. Focused movement isn't saving you from enemies, bullets and players moving at Mach 10. And the soft requirement of needing a patch for the game to be playable makes it a poor first choice.
The art and music are subjective, as I said, so there's little point in arguing about them. My personal opinion is that the soundfont is doing the game a disservice. The tracks are iconic, sure, but the arrangements suck.
