What was Ryukishi07 thinking when he came up with Lambdadelta? I mean seriously. It's not something I see being talked about much, just "Oh, Lambdadelta". I can see where the design influence for most of the characters came from, the whole romanticised "Western" thing(mostly Victorian, turn of the century kind of stuff).

Lambda on the other hand is just batshit. She looks like a cake or something.

Thing is you actually see some girls like her in goth clubs... most people have a fairly limited idea of what goths actually look like and wouldn't make this connection, so it's even more bizarre that a japanese guy would come up with this kind of character design given they don't have proper "goth" over there.

Drugs, bro. Lots of them.

Precisely.

Flandre + Subculture Awareness.

She is the most Touhou looking of the When They Cry characters, probably(except Hanyuu). Given there's some gothic lolita influence in some Touhou designs, you could nearly put it down to that but as the OP said it's clearly very "western" style goth, with the whole thrown together halloween theme.

Halloween is mentioned in umineko and how witch love to dress up and act like humans. with the reduced magic toxin or whatever.

So basically witches enjoy dressing up in fancy costumes.
Witches, Creators wear Royality dresses.
Voyager wear Lolita gear

What about Dlanor? look at all those frills.

Dlanor's a rook.

What does that make Beatrice? I know that Maria is a King.

Frills are more of a lolita thing. Lolita is kind of based of Victorian stuff, but cutesified. Umineko's designs are kinda like that too as well as having a more general regal fantasy influence like with Eva's dress but obviously not as cutesified.

Western goth is a mix of what you'd see with gothic lolita, and punky sort of styles, which can mean more or less anything. Goths always get bad rep for being elitist but you can go to a goth club dressed as pretty much anything(including shirt and jeans) and nobody will give a shit. Try dressing up as Lambdadelta in a regular bar and see how elitist people can get...

Actually, Maria's the black Queen.

Battler and Beatrice are probably Kings, since the game hangs on them. Except EP5 threw things off the course.

Ronove/Genji seems like the Bishops.
Kanon is a rook
I think Piece beato would be a queen.
Originally I thought Kinzo would be the queen piece, but I might switch it to Kryie as she has the most aggressive ability and figuring out the culprit.

Yeah, I don't get the Pumpkin. It makes no sense in 3 dimensions. And not a lot in 2 either. The problem with having no animation means we don't really know what it is or does. It could be something that orbits around her.

Reminds me of a Judge badge, actually, which looks similary awkward.

If Maria is the Black King, then Beatrice fits in perfectly as the Black Queen, given what's she's been doing over the first few episodes(before faggotry and gayness happened and she became neutered as a character]

I think of the piece 16 (17 - Battler) as the pawns. Eva promoted to a queen in EP3.

Yeah, I'd also like the note that the witches chessboard's pieces would change with each arc, As it would probably go like this:

Arc 1:
Beato + Stakes(Queen+Rooks+Bishops+Horses) + Goats(Pawns)
Arc 2:
Piece Beato (King) + (Stakes)
+ (Goats)

Arc 3: Beato (King) Virgilia (Queen) + Ronove (Bishop) Stakes (The rest with Lucifer and one other being demoted) + Goats (Pawns)
