As a character, he is generic. You see his type all the time. In anime, movies, games, anything. He's the minor villian with an unimportant backstory, if any at all, that usually tries to have his way with an important character. The only difference between Rance and the cliche bad-guy henchman is that Rance is a main character, thus has powerlevel plothax, while the later dies very quickly.

The earlier Zeldas were limited by the technical capability of consoles. However, compare it to Windwaker. Link is expressive as hell through a variety of well-done facial emotions. If you go beyond lolcelda, Link stands out as his own character through the adventure.

You do not need personality for Zelda games to work.
And Rance does not have DEPTH, but he is not one-dimensional. You see expressions and thought process on so many situations, including ones normal games cannot include, he is fully fleshed out and he has varying reactions.
Not to mention, minor villains differ fucking greatly in presentation.
You overgeneralize.

And to return to the original point, Rance runs in a SINGLE world that is largely established (heck, you already know where he is headed next), Zelda has a fucked up timeline of places and worlds that barely connect and you can have no idea what to predict.

The original meaning of 'Hero' was simply the one who defeats his enemies and protects the common folk (be it monsters, sometimes just another kingdom who they were at war and portrayed as bad guys). Odysseus falls in this largely, as do the heroes of teh Trojan war.
And later on. they used to portray and promote perfection and balance in their works, till certain tragic writers, especially Sophocles and Euripides focused on truly human characters, with their flaws and weakness.
That's when 'tragic hero' was really established.
Since then, hero has grown to include many things.

That's true... hell, Achilles got killed while he was raping one of King Priam's daughters. Turns out the position made his heel an easy target.
Rape was just so common historically it didn't factor at all when considering someone's status as a hero.
Ironic that Rance, while a bit impulsive, matches the traditional definition of a hero more than the other heroes pictured today... he might have been generic then, but today he's quite exceptional.

>> No.3551420

So who is almost as big a rapist as Rance in Ranceverse?

>> No.3551453

You're forgetting that most Greek/Roman heroes were such because they specifically did their duty. Odysseus could have chosen to remain perfectly content on the island and have sex all he wants, even after getting screwed around with for years. Despite this he still goes back home to his wife.

Rance only "protects the common folk" through sheer coincidence of winding up on the opposite side of worse baddies. Compared him Gilgamesh, the very first hero. Gilgamesh started out living extravagantly, taking advantage of his power as king to have the rights of first-nights with a newlywed. When he grows into a hero, he becomes more tame. He goes off to slay the giant Humbaba specifically because he know he will die and he wants to do good for his people, even if he might not survive the fight. Rance just does whatever he wants.

You could say "Oh, it doesn't matter if he raped a lot of women, killed a couple dozen kids, or anything like that. It doesn't matter if 95% of everything he did was for selfish or whimsical reasons. He still killed demons and saved people." Sure, but let's sum up his entire character. Rance isn't a hero. He's not meant to be. He was never designed as a "hero". He's an epic comedian, if anything. Rape was common in war as it did not constitute a real crime until much later in the 20th century. Killing children as well. And anything like that.

And besides, if not for Rance, lots more people would've been raped (Rance limits himself to the most beautiful ones) and killed as well as the existence of a two-class apartheid system would still be working in Zeth. It's obvious, but you should deploy 6 units per attack. Extra troops help initial Battle Rating.
Use straightforward attackers for Yoshikage and Tourin to quickly inflict damage, and save the great abilities and units with High stats for Baba and Yamagata.
For the last two, Use Kenshin+Uruza Combo, and Natori plus something like White Beam, Double Tulip etc.
Insta-kills or strong ranged attackers for the cavalry help.
Finally, since you defend, focus on lowering their numbers so they do not do much damage, rather than killing them off.
Battle Rating wins are the key.

Yamagata Masakage is the strongest, try to reduce his action count with Kenshin, Uruza or whatever else if you can. Use ranged attacks if possible because melee units might hurt themselves more than him.
If you have some tacticians or goninjas with buff removal abilities, they might be worth using given that all four generals have all four buffs.

Well, if the fireman did his job perfectly so he could rape any women in the houses he kept from burning down, he probably wouldn't be much of a hero at all, really.

Yeah, if you want to go by the ancient definition, his firefighting prowess would be Heroic in scope. But then, so was murdering everything male and all the virgin women, children, and non-pregnant women in a conquered city-state so you could take them as your rape-slaves, too.

And just because some older societies were too barbaric to not consider rape (of a woman that didn't still have male relatives to lay claim to her) a crime, it doesn't mean it wasn't wrong.

tldr: Rance is a rapist and that makes him a bad person, even if he has also accomplished some good deeds. If he was just sleeping with consenting women that threw themselves at him, or who he romanced, or who were just as sex-crazed as him, that'd be totally fine.
