He's the minor villian with an unimportant backstory, if any at all, that usually tries to have his way with an important character. The only difference between Rance and the cliche bad-guy henchman is that Rance is a main character, thus has powerlevel plothax, while the later dies very quickly.

The earlier Zeldas were limited by the technical capability of consoles. However, compare it to Windwaker. Link is expressive as hell through a variety of well-done facial emotions. If you go beyond lolcelda, Link stands out as his own character through the adventure.

It's obvious, but you should deploy 6 units per attack. Extra troops help initial Battle Rating.
Use straightforward attackers for Yoshikage and Tourin to quickly inflict damage, and save the great abilities and units with High stats for Baba and Yamagata.
For the last two, Use Kenshin+Uruza Combo, and Natori plus something like White Beam, Double Tulip etc.
Insta-kills or strong ranged attackers for the cavalry help.
Finally, since you defend, focus on lowering their numbers so they do not do much damage, rather than killing them off.
Battle Rating wins are the key.

They're just tough no matter how you look at it. One of their strong points is that they all have the ability to hit anyone in your army, and their stats are high.
Yamagata Masakage is the strongest, try to reduce his action count with Kenshin, Uruza or whatever else if you can. Use ranged attacks if possible because melee units might hurt themselves more than him.
If you have some tacticians or goninjas with buff removal abilities, they might be worth using given that all four generals have all four buffs.
One could write many pages of general advice, but in the end, you have to look at what you have and make the most of it.

Deploy one foot soldier, your worst one at the first attacks with two other bushi. Hope for the assassination, then beat the cavalry units next to their general, win by battle rating. Second: the tactician with 3 action flags is not a big deal, use another tactician so he'll spend his actions removing your buffs, win by battle rating. tldr: Rance is a rapist and that makes him a bad person, even if he has also accomplished some good deeds.
