If you watch these movies from Yoji Yamada, the director from the Tora-san series, you'll noticed how from period of then years from 1970 to 1980 they are all more of less the same story, like they are spiritual continuations of each other recycling also most of the same cast.
Now I'm sad because I watched the last one of those, "A Distant Cry From Spring".
I really wanted to watch more Yamadas that are not Tora-sans, I have no interest on those. Maybe they're good but it looks such a waste...

For those interested it goes like this:
1970 "Where Spring Comes Late" is a spiritual sequel to 1972 " Home from the Sea".
1977 "The Yellow Handkerchief" is a spiritual sequel to 1980 " A Distant Cry from Spring".
Yes, the "sequels" came "after".

There's also the stand alone 1976 "The Village" that it's also lovely.

One of my favorite filmmaker does that too, he's from that era. His Kerberos saga and Tachiguishi arc (which is part of the Kerberos saga) are very intriguing and thought-provoking.

Watched Himizu today. Pretty good, feel like Sono does better when he holds back somewhat on the schlock and blunt provocativeness, keeps it in balance with the drama and satire. The Nazi scene, for example, was much funnier and more impactful than it would have been had he gone full gonzo.

Pretty good movie. It made me think about my life more than any movie has before. Third Kore-eda film I've seen. After the Storm is still my favorite. Didn't like shoplifters too much but I'm looking forward to the rest of his stuff.

Thank you for not spoiling the end of Dragon Zakura 2, or maybe the invasion of EOPs scared you away, I couldn't get to watch the final episode until just now.
It was obvious what the conclusion was going to be, or rather the genereal structure of how the episode was going to play out. It still managaed to deliver the finale in a satisfying way. I'm sure many people had a problem with the business thriller side story, since the show itself is about school and studying and not Hanzawa Naoki. I was mostly intruiged at first but the conclusion to it definitely didn't feel worth it. They defenitely had something going on and adding more tension to the plot isn't a bad idea but the execution wasn't right. All these full grown adults hedging their bets on the five students passing Toudai is a pretty retarded plan and realistically would've had more contingencies ready. But I understand what the writers were trying to achieve, not just plot-wise but a general message about how teaching institutions should care more and if their methods aren't working then it's time to change them. Though the twist with Takahara being in on the resort plan from the beginning was dumb shock value and it clearly showed how much the writing was becoming confused as to what it wanted to do.
On the subject of dumb writing decisions, I'm personally disappointed that the show didn't follow through with the dark hero approach with Sakuragi Sensei. It kinda did for a couple episodes and then this aspect faded away as he became just another tsundere hero that solves everybody's problems like it's nothing while also giving some sappy speech at the end. This last episode kinda wrote it off as his character developing over time and being less cynical as the story progressed but it felt at odds with what it was trying to achieve in the very beginning. I defenitely enjoyed the more thriller approach it had in the beginning but maybe other people felt differently.

Another strange thing I noticed was the lack of romance story, like the one from the first season all those years back. You'd definitely expect it for this kind of seishuun show but it was pretty much non-existent, which is surprising for the choice of actors they used for the students. It's not to say that the show needed it, since it still was compelling without it, but I take it as a bold choice and challenge for the showrunners to focus more on the other aspects of the show.
However I will bring up how this kinda made the dynamic between the students a bit more clean. Everybody becomes best friends at one point and the relationships are too chummy. But when the plot calls for it they become strained and distant until their problem for the episode is solved. I guess I was hoping for something more down to earth and slower paced. The first season had better student characters and dynamics between them I think. Even if the characters were mostly flaky delinquents. Which is something season 2 changed by having its students just be more normal and relatable to the average viewer yet the writing made them out to be larger than life.
Overall though, I still enjoyed it very much and looked forward to it every week. Season 2 was a much stronger work that even surpasses its predecessor in many ways.

Just watched it yesterday too, very much enjoyed it. The constant comparisons to Parasite made me expect a greater emphasis on the class issues, so I was initially kinda disappointed I didn't get that, but I understand that wasn't really what Kore-eda was concerned with and quickly appreciated the focus on the moral and ethical questions and the notion of the family unit. It had so much heart and made me yearn for hugs and Aki going back to the house was annihilating. Nobody does so much with so little quite like Kore-eda.

Yeah, exactly. It's just that I saw people bringing Shoplifters up in the same breath, because working class and scams, I guess. It really does the film a disservice and paints a wrong picture. Shoplifters is more character-driven, for one, with more nuanced characterization and development thereof and is primarily about the basic human need to belong, what constitutes a healthy and safe environment, social norms and the tricky interplay between selfless care and selfish needs and the critique of capitalism just comes in how material concerns contort and influence interpersonal ties and their growth between people driven to the margins, whereas Parasite's characters are more like stock figures and the movie is more about exploring the conditions and circumstances that make them act in such a way. It's really fun, amazingly constructed and on point, but I also feel like there's not much there I didn't pick up on the first watch, while Shoplifters does come across as more layered and also far denser in terms of dialogue and the unsaid subtleties of character interactions.

Anyway, Bong's best movie is still Memories of Murder and I'm really interested in the baby box movie Kore-eda's doing with his cinematographer and Song Kang-ho.

Completely unrelated to the discussion but I really dislike Zakoshi. Just as a whole and all his bits they just fall completely flat so he just comes off as very obnoxious and gives this "LOOK AT ME" vibe. Which sucks because he's present a lot in later documental episodes and I think he kills a lot of the fun for me.

I hate him too. He has a single gag which I completely don't understand, it's hyokkorihan tier garbage. I really don't know how he keeps getting work, you'd think the public would grow tired of generic screaming by now. She's not particularly charming in this (not her fault, her character is not supposed to be), more like quirky/carefree. Unless you're interested in her nude scenes (there's a couple), it's not worth seeing for Fumi alone. To be clear the movie is not bad, the lukewarm reception is probably due to the high expectations. I don't regret watching it.
