Which units fill unique rolls and are thus important to get? Units like Medicine, who excels at breaking barriers. I'm worried I'm going to do nothing but focus on pure DPS units.

Global player here, but none as far as I'm aware. Most of the best JP units seem to be pure DPS, whether it's through raw power like Yuuka or special bullets like Toyohime.
That being said, Tewi, Sagume, and Joon's sister are all rated highly by JP players despite being debuff units, so maybe check them out.

It's not the most exciting thing in the world but it's pretty viable, it's funny to see such an aggressive character be best at a stalling strategy.

Sometimes the gacha giveth, and sometimes the gacha taketh. My yuyuko and roulette rolls were abyssmal, but I got both yukari and kasen and bunch of good units this time in only 70 rolls. Enjoy Yukari, she's apparently good for late-game content, and she gets a wedding dress eventually.

Prepare your lw: Ran, Youmu, Yuyuko.
If you want to stall, prepare Reimu, Sanae, and Medicine. A quick note for stalling. You can stall almost any floors that don't hit Reimu's weakness.

You need 7 hits of wood over the course of 3-4 turns and then a something to also clean up the fairies.
Cards that boost SP (Midnight Tea, It's Spring etc.) let you hit those later boosts multiple times in a row.

It's perfectly fine to play as f2p if you're only looking for written stuff and the story. There's nothing that ever forces you to play on a higher difficulty than Normal unless you really like to collect things and want to get everything faster.

I honestly think the writing in this is very good, the main story is interesting, the characters are all very charming, the events are pretty funny, the descriptions for characters and story cards is pretty thorough, and there are references to a lot of print works and lesser-known characters.

If you are talking about those incense woods, I think you can safely use them.
The cap for a level 100 unit is around 500 something (for HP) and somewhere between 70 and 100 for other stats depending on the unit.
Since you get a bunch every time you farm something (and in events? I think), I guess it's okay to go up to the cap.

I was thinking it was a mistake to increase medicine's agility. If Ran opens her LW first it will inflict 2 poison barriers. That way Medicine will always full break on turn 1 with her LW.

There is actually a way to achieve 100% consistency with an MLB Yuyuko, MLB Medicine, and an AOE LW 2hu team. You just need a 1.5 Spirit Power Up card to make sure that Yuyuko has at least 2P for the Wood break on her Spread Shot after her LW turn (her LW refunds >0.5P even if it only hits Marisa).

Whenever Medicine's 2nd skill hits the 10% bad RNG, full auto Yuyuko can reliably break Marisa's last barrier via a boosted Spread Shot. From then on it's a very straightforward clean up. I used this team to farm and MLB Lunatic Marisa's card.

Probably about a hundred bucks. I got desperate for Yuyuko and dropped 80 for a boatload of god cubes. But then I ended up getting her on my 10 roll so I still have all those god cubes collecting dust. I've done the Nitori monthly thing twice and will continue to do so (4 bucks is nothing) and I did the 5 buck guaranteed friend thing once early on. Good thing you start the game with Reimu then who already has her buffs from the jap version and one of the strongest last words with her buffed scaling. Not upgrading units is just shit spouted by people who have no idea how the game works and just imagine weird scenarios in their head. Like what kind of situation are you supposed to be in where a weak unit with her basic spells is somehow going to carry you? Events also increase in difficulty with each one so people who are used to global's first baby event are going to get a rude awakening if they want to farm bosses with their lvl 70 units. People already struggle to beat Red Marisa with good units and tower isn't even out yet.

What's Alice good for? One of my slots in my dojo has gone unused for two days so I figure it's time to start training somebody up. The only thing that bothers me about Alice is that it looks like her third active skill is by far the best (part ACC buff) but she's still only rank 2 so I don't have it yet.

Tanks can be useful in the tower but that is only if you have a team to support them. Otherwise they will eventually just die too or you will deal so little damage that you will die of old age. It also usually requires them to be maxed out because you want as high as possible stats when tanking.

Tank + Mokou + Sanae + Medicine can be a basic one. Mokou is pretty good at stalling surprisingly even though it means doing nothing but spamming her 2nd shot.

Typically, you want to run one tank, one healer, one dots dmg dealer. You can be greedy and run two dmg dealers with one tank like pic show and swap in Sanae to heal Medi when needed. You can stall almost any non-boss floors that don't hit moon. Also, Yukari's focused shot can deal decent dmg because it has def scaling.

This is what happens when you have people pretending to know the game by just reading the jap wiki. Jap wiki for some reason does not factor in tower at all for character rankings. All that the jap wiki ranks is how good characters are at full auto grinding. They also almost never update anything. Youmu is still one of the absolute best characters according to the jap wiki simply because she got a high ranking in the early days. I don't think anyone who actually plays the game in its current state would consider Youmu better than someone like Yuyuko or Suika.

Reimu has the same amount of points as regular Marisa which is extremely sad for a ranking system. Anyone who plays the jap version knows how terrible Marisa is past the first few hours of the game so buffed Reimu being put on her level makes no sense. Those western tier lists that people sometimes post in here make more sense for some characters.

The issue is that global gets tower much faster than jp. You don't have many resources right now and if you want to climb fast, you will have to stall. With a lot of characters, you can just spam lw to climb tower without having to stall.

I am curious to see if people will factor in reincarnation into their rankings. How good would Marisa be if she is reincarnated? How high are her stats then? What about characters who are already good and gain the ability to reincarnate, like Reimu? Will Reimu go up a tier? Assuming they keep adding characters to the pool, you might end up with someone like a reincarnated Toyohime in the future.

Yeah, I lucked out really hard on Yuyuko. Unfortunately, the only costume out right now that I like is Marisa's and I don't use her at all so it feels like a waste. Might expand the school again at some point so a fifth character can get the bonus morale, but as it is I only ever use the same three characters for grinding everything.

There are a ton of really nice costumes on the JP wiki. I whaled a bit for Yuyuko too (glad I did it because I didn't have Youmu either) and they carried me through the event.

I don't regret it, I would not have been able to do anything in the event without them and now I have some God Cubes for later costumes that I really want, like Delinquent Mokou or Halloween Rumia.

You can buy costumes without owning the characters, the game will just remind you that you don't own the character when you buy it. I got the Remi and Flan from the event before ever rolling Remi or Flan.
