He's far from being one.
The plot armor does actually make sense, considering Avalon it's the reason why he survived and the reason he summoned Arturia again.
He's also not perfect, he makes a lot of mistakes getting others hurt, in the first two routes he pretty much forget about that one girl who's getting beaten by his brother to play the hero, and nearly killed her for the "greater good".

1) The "immortality" that Shirou has disappears when Saber disappears. So in all but one ending Shirou is as mortal as you or I.

2) Sword hax is really only useful against Gilgamesh due to both of them being collectors of weapons rather than masters of a weapon. Shirou beats Dark Berserker and Dark Saber due to Archer's influence (and still dies to Dark Saber).

3) Most of the girls have either loved him/had a crush on him before the VN started. Ilya never really cared for him beyond trying to exact revenge against her father, though being treated like a little sister probably made her happy as it gave her one last chance at having a family. Rider and Saber I guess you could get away with as the only argument I can come up with them is that they both share their Masters' personalities, which makes it easier for them to fall for Shirou (Rider never admits her feeling until F/HA so not sure how accurate it is). Don't forget Caster, who actively tries to kill Shirou in every route.

Anyone else agree that generally speaking, F/SN characters weren't nearly as well and thoroughly developed as Tsukihime characters?

I guess the action scenes were sorta ok in F/SN, but most for most characters, especially Shirou and Saber, you had a clear picture of their entire character 5 minutes into the game. In the character development area, things only started to pick up some momentum during HF, but that wasn't enough to make up for the two earlier routes. Tsukihime is Nasu's best game by a long shot.

Shirou's problem as a character was mostly that he was so unrealistic in his monomania that it was extremely hard to connect with him. Shiki was pretty much an "average Joe" as far as his personality went. Shirou... was Shirou.

Saber's problem was that she acted like a damn robot for 95% of the game.
