Okay, hypothetical situation.

Lets say I come into a large sum of money, enough to get enough intrest to set me for life, and move to the motherland, Japan. While there I will most likely buy a nice house. Lets say typical suburb home.

If this were to ever happen, just buy gold. There are some trustworthy gold storage sites unrelated to US or London banks and gold reserves. Canada isn't too bad a location to store it in but I can't recall some better international locations. Heck, if you have nationalities with Russia or China, stick with their banks as they'll be better able to withstand a financial crisis once the US dollar is no longer the global currency seeing as they own a large percentage of the world's gold.
