What is your earliest otaku memory? How long have you been in the medium? Are there things you wish lasted longer or are you complacent? Sometimes when I'm browsing the net I come across a bunch of old stuff. The internet was a lot different even just 5-10 years ago, or even before that.
What happened other than you just grew older?

I wish this fantasy trend in anime would just die already. It's been years and they're still at it. There is nothing new coming out that scratches that experimental itch of mine either. I still enjoy seasonal shows, but they never make think "goddamn that's some cool cinematography".

Yes I am thinking of SHAFT.

>What is your earliest otaku memory? How long have you been in the medium?
Vague and loose. Playing Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis is my earliest memory, for what it's worth.

>Are there things you wish lasted longer
Who doesn't?

>What happened other than you just grew older?
I'm assuming you're asking about getting jaded and shit? Shit, that's just what happens when you get older. It happens to everyone. Nobody enjoys the exact same things forever(maybe general things like video games, but nothing specific like a specific title or specific album), and continuously generated entertainment will almost inevitably fall in quality. As a whole the world and normal people have more access to the kinds of things we used to get made fun of for enjoying. This is no longer your sekret klub. It's been said many times by many people here in many of these kinds of threads that many old /jp/sies have either become normalfags or killed themselves, and honestly, I think the older you get the harder it is to avoid those two choices. If you do avoid them, you eventually fall into a third category of limbo - not really otaku but not really normalfag.

There's not a lot else to say. Other than that normalfag-not normalfag is a false dichotomy, you're better off as a so-called normalfag and to be loved and fulfilled, and that otaku culture is on borrowed time.

>otaku culture is on borrowed time.
I know. Still, I want it to have a fighting chance before it either changes so much that it is distinguishable from what it once was due to normalfag or corporate influence, or just fades into obscurity like the rest of the early internet.
>This is no longer your sekret klub.
I just find it to be a case of no better alternative. I really can't care any less about sekret klub nonsense. Old /jp/sies succeeded in creating various spinoffs, but for the wrong reasons. In the end, it's those who come after them that suffer for it. Usually for no better reason other than a track record they had nothing to do with. Gatekeeping keeps things in check, but it has more potential to do harm than good. When overdone, can kill any hopes of long term survival.

>There's not a lot else to say. Other than that normalfag-not normalfag is a false dichotomy, you're better off as a so-called normalfag and to be loved and fulfilled, and that otaku culture is on borrowed time.
Everyone is better off being a normalfag or attempting to be one, but there's no point in changing yourself for others in order to be liked. If everyone did that, most wouldn't be here in the first place and would be leading better lives. Maybe I'm just looking at it differently. It usually feels that way.

Twelve years ago when I was in college I read a shitty harem manga someone linked me and decided I'd start watching anime. Fast-forwards to now and here I am, consuming exclusively Japanese media, most of which nobody in the West gives even a little bit of a shit about, waiting for my real life to begin.

That's definitely not the point I was trying to make. I agree with you, but at the same time your degree of normalcy is a choice, in a way, to a degree. You'll never be able to entirely squash your otaku spirit but you can make lifestyle choices, like not being a hikki or neet, getting a gf/bf, etc. You can also make the choice of going to see a movie or staying inside to watch some obscure anime just so you can keep up on "otaku culture"; basically, choosing the more socially acceptable, potentially out of your comfort zone option when two options present the same amount of enjoyment.

I would never advocate anybody "fake it to make it." I myself would die first. I don't know why but I feel all others that have walked "our path" probably feel the same way.

Japanese media always had the potential to go mainstream. Really no hindrances other than language/cultural barrier. Anime, manga, LNs, eroge are brimming with normalfag sensibilities. The concept of moe also has pretty universal appeal like cat videos. There's nothing inherently un-normalfag about this shit.

Watching anime with my big brother at age 10 or so. Soon after I asked my parents to get me a Shakugan no Shana boxset for Christmas. I watched the whole 26-episode thing in one day, and then later watched all of Lucky Star on youtube split up into three videos for each episode. At that point I knew I wanted to become a big fan of this stuff.

I miss that youthful innocence I had, when anime and Japanese stuff seemed like this magical world full of new things to discover. I understand that I'm just too jaded and old to experience that again, but it's still a bit depressing.

14 years ago a younger me stumbled upon Haruhi Suzumiya. Ever since then Otaku culutre has been a part of my life, and I don't regret a moment of it.

To answer your questions, I don't think a day would come when I miss the overambundance of school life and moeshit anime from the 2000s, but god I want to go back now. Every freaking fantasy anime that comes out nowadays feels so similar, with a few exceptions that have really bizarre concepts, or shit like that.

Anime and otaku culture are becoming a lot more mainstream, and its killing off the culture we used to have, and I cherished. I suppose its no different to back then, but people really seem to eat up whatever new popular show is coming out.

As a Haruhifag maybe I shouldn't be talking, but it really feels like the internet has lost some magic as time has gone on, and its not just us getting older.

>What is your earliest otaku memory?
In terms of japanese media? I guess speicifcally trying to hunt down anime related dvds in local video stores which pretty much boiled down to Spirited away and the animatrix. In terms of more generally nerdy behavior placing social orders in for indie graphic novels in a small local bookstore. The lady that owned it was super cool and if her distributor didn't have a book she would just buy it on amazon and then sell it to me. Which was nice since when I was a teen regular bank cards couldn't be used online.
>How long have you been in the medium?
manga since my early teens. I didn't think I started watching anime regularly until I was 18 and had fast internet in college.

>Are there things you wish lasted longer or are you complacent?
Hmm. manga wise I think things are pretty good these days, the English pubs have recovered from the financial crash and are publishing a broader range of titles than they ever have before.

I guess I miss being able to talk about yuri on /a/ but it is what it is.

Kinda wish the booming era of VNs stayed, there's still plenty of course but I miss when it was a popular medium. Phone VNs aren't the same, and gacha games with VN segments and halfassed battle systems might have well been VNs.
