3493684 No.3493684 [Reply] [Original]

I know you'll probably think I'm trolling, but just hear me out, this is my honest opinion, it isn't copypasta or anything.

I recently played Saya no Uta. I never bothered with it because it was spoiled for me even before the translation was out, so I never felt compelled to play it. It was a bit like watching Citizen Kane knowing rosebud was his sled.

Anyway, someone finally convinced me to play it. Considering it's heralded as one of the crown jewels of VNs and is pretty short, I decided I couldn't really put it off any longer.

What the fuck.

I was so incredibly disappointed. I was expecting a masterpiece, instead, I got some sort of Katawa Shoujo meets Tsukihime meets The Twilight Zone plot. I thought the "really, really average" copypasta was trolling, but it really is true.

Here's the Cliffs Notes version of it:

1. Boy gets into an accident and his perception of the world is forever changed (SO ORIGINAL)
2. Guro everywhere. "What if your perception of things was completely changed? What is reality? What does 'real' even mean? " Well, this seems interesting so far. Rather philosophical.
3. CONCEPT IS RAN INTO THE GROUND. Hurr, for Fuminori, normal things are gore and gore is normal. We get it already. HisaoFuminori spends the entire time whining about how terrible his life is. His relationship with his old friends is destroyed.

>> No.3493691

>>3493684
4. Fuminori meets a cute loli with weird traits. BUT OH SHIT, SHE REALLY IS A MONSTER! LOOK AT THE HINTS, it's like I'm really Sherlock Holmes!
5. COMPLETELY FORCED H SCENES. Yeah, yeah, this is nitpicking, because all VNs that aren't sex romp games have forced H scenes. But it was particularly bad in SnU.
6. Totally awesome, not predictable at all things happen. Saya eats humans! He eats the entrails of his former friend and thinks it's pretty good! What a TWEEEEEST.
7. Obligatory rape scene.
8. Fuminori finally learns Saya is a monster. The reader opens a bottle of champagne to celebrate, took him long enough.

9-1. If Fuminori chooses to become normal, he's sent to a nut house. (BUT SAYA, THE DISGUSTING GORE BLOB STILL LOVES HIM ;_;)
9-2. I didn't bother with the other endings, but (correct me if I'm wrong) you either kill Saya and humanity is saved or you don't kill Saya and humanity is doomed. DEEPER THAN EVA.

Really, guys. How do you rank Saya no Uta above Tsukihime? How do you rank it above anything? Every other VN I've read so far is better than Saya no Uta. I seriously couldn't believe I was reading something by Nitro+, everything was so forced, predictable, unnecessary and boring. I was reading something so short and yet was still clicking away waiting for it to end, the only other time I did this was when reading Katawa Shoujo.

>>3493691
Every character other than Fuminori's ex-girlfriend was shit (who I really felt sorry for). Saya was disgusting right from the moment she showed up. The interest the philosophical questions generated in me quickly disappeared when they kept beating dead horses and failed to explore more interesting things. The whole plot looked like it was completely lifted from the script of an old The Twilight Zone episode (remember that pig world episode?), only extremely "faux artsy" and pretentious.

I really, really can't believe you're comparing this with Tsukihime, which will keep you glued to the screen. Even Fate/Stay Night and its shonen-like plot reads better. And this is without mentioning true masterpieces like Planetarian and Ever17. Or things that put you on the edge like Umineko. Or relaxing cute porn games like Wanko that don't aim high, but are satisfying. Or crying games that do exactly what they are meant to do, like Clannad. The list goes on.

Saya no Uta tries too hard to be deep and artistic, but it completely fails to meet those goals. In the end, it's a work that is not very good at anything that it purported itself to be. If I was a Pitchfork reviewer, I'd give it a 0.1/10.0.

So yeah. I'm never trusting you guys again. Thanks for raising my expectations like that.

This tries to emphasize just how drastic the change to GORE EVERYWHERE is.

This can easily be achieved by having the story start with pre accident Fuminori, actually talk to your friends before seeing them as blobs of flesh and actually seeing the accident happen.

Cue blackout in hospital scenes, where you can't see anything and only talk to people for some time and then finally open your eyes and let the brick shitting commence.

This is a general qualm I have about VN's, there is NO setting at all. You're thrown right away in the plot. This is definitely something that got butchered by pacing.

Oh shit, you're from some bizzaro alternate universe world.

Welcome to our dimension, in this world, nearly everyfucking VN ever spends ages at the beginning on shitty slice of life intro scenes. OH BOY SCHOOL AGAIN? THIS IS SO AWESOME IT'S LIKE IM REALLY AN ORDINARY HIGHSCHOOL BOY

Except it isn't 'just' a love story. When people talk about why this game is so great or why they like it, they hardly ever say it's because of the love story.

i completely agree with you, OP, i thought that, while some of the premises were interesting and intriguing, the bulk of the game was gore- and shock-driven, to the point where any sense of depth was overshadowed by the urge to portray things to be as grisly as possible. the endings were actually interesting in their own right, but mostly, the game tried so hard to be shocking that i found it shallow.

i would like to say that it read somewhat similarly to American science fiction. if anything, it felt something like "Childhood's End", which was in some ways poorly written but nonetheless good.

well, Saya no Uta was both poorly written and mediocre. it was somewhat fun to read, but it's neither well-written nor a masterpiece.

Most games spend fucking hours on it. Not enough? it's too much. In fact, this is the biggest problem with VNs. They lack fucking editing. Not just the intro, I mean everything. It's like they're just obsessed with padding it, adding more scenes and more hours which just ends up severely diminishing the overall quality. That is unless you mean the actual substance. Because that's the problem with VNs, they seem to think that just writing a lot will make it good when in the end they've written a lot but very little of it has any substance at all.

Most visual novels and anime tend to try to hard to force feelings onto you and it just makes it horrible but brings out the cryfags who get all emotional when some generic unlikable protagonist dies whom you have 3 hours of connection to. Interesting. I for one enjoyed it despite its flaws that you mention, like the shoehorned sex scenes, and the pacing and setting.
But I think you missed out on the true kernel of the story. The other two ends are far better when compared to the asylum end, and elicit the most emotional response, mostly because they show Fuminori for the bastard that he has become, and how entangled he has grown with Saya.

Overall, I still recommend it. It's good for a shot VN, and it avoids most of the obvious cliches that I've grown tired of reading, specifically high school settings.

I liked the story and the ideas driving it, but I didn't like how little it explored itself.

There was a lot of potential to be something really great here, but it was wasted due to some personality-lacking writing and a lack of length.

It was all too eager to just finish the damn thing rather than explore the interesting concepts. I wanted to see Fuminori create some more crazy murderous scenes. I wanted more detail on his state of being. Maybe we should have seen him before the accident? It jumps in halfway through the story, and then ends abruptly, leaving you wishing for more details.
