Simlpe explanation: Ange (Battler's step-sister 6 yeras old in 1986) is now 18 in 1998 afer the third game and then she appears in the Meta-world. Then we the readers start reading about her travel and how she arrived there. During her flashbacks about her travel, she also reads Maria's diaries, which are her own personal story, therefore, a flashback about Maria inside a flashback of Ange (it's a flashback because is her reminiscence, even if for us is a flashforward it counts as flashback)
