By the way, about pink haired girl from Sakura no Kisetsu. You probably know this game as "datesim with girls from Evangelion, Rayearth, Saint Tail". But there isn't strong public opinion on what character was reference for that pink haired girl.
Some anon claimed that she is a reference to some girl from Pia Carrot, but that's obvious bullshit, because Sakura no Kisetsu was released before Pia Carrot. And girls look barely alike anyway.
Personally, I think artist tried to make some "teen Chibiusa (from Sailor Moon)" image. Both have pink hair, puffy pigtails, red eyes.
What do you think, oldbros?

I don't like shilling which is why I haven't posted it on here before. But it's hard to find people who are into retro VNs, and this seems like an extremely appropriate thread. A couple months ago I released a short VN which was an open love letter to retro VNs. I've been a huge VNfag for 10 years now, and I wanted to make something that expressed my appreciation for the medium. I literally made this VN for other people who are into retro VNs, so if anyone is interested it's called Digitital Seclusion. You can find it for free on Itch.io. Picrelated.

I should probably mention that I reference a bunch of retro VNs (from PC-98 stuff to '99 and very early 00's stuff). Some of the references are as simple as music choices, and others are more overt.

I agree somewhat. My gripe with artstyles is how even with distinct styles in the references, they still look a little samey season over season.
If anything, it's probably just a difference in hand drawn and something done entirely on a computer. There's a feel to the hand drawn stuff that a computer will never capture no matter how flashy or smooth it looks.

Hard to say. Most of the PC98 review sites are long dead (along with their owners). The biggest PC98 connoiseur in the west, BTAxis, died of a heart attack or something, so no new roms have been released after his death.

There is PC98 image, which is still being maintained, miraculously.

There is also game database, which only hosts images, which at least helps you know what kind of game and content said games have.

Also
>Much of the software out there were simple no-brainer & no-story plotlines where you just rape a girl that pops up on the screen. It was good while it sold, but eventually people became exhausted in spending over 8800 yen for something that had mindless sex after sex with a plotline along the lines of a "bad 1980s American porno."
I find it saddening that the erogame fad from a few years ago basically ended up being this in reverse. There were a few really good games, but it's just descended into boring sex battle RPGs and CG hunts.
