after getting through 200 hours of anime i strongly doubt the importance of "comprehensible input”. if anything, you probably want incomprehensible input if you have the willpower for it. more sentences heard if they talk at a faster speed. better tolerance of accents if you hear a lot of nonstandard japanese. i learn a lot of words even if i don't understand the rest of the sentence - e.g. getting a bunch of military terms from galactic heroes. if i look up something like 艦隊 or 提督 in the bilingual dictionary that’s pretty much all the context i need to understand those words. and for specialized vocabulary like that, i can be sure i found the correct dictionary entry just from typing in what i hear without the assistance of subs.

I know I should be reading, but I prioritized learning kanji and one or two common readings for each one, and I have to say, I'm shocked that it's making a difference. When I see words I've never come across, I can guess their readings and meanings half the time just because I know the kanji. I'm seriously considering just memorizing the 2136 jouyou kanji and most of their meanings and readings before I go on to reading.
