Why did ZUN make her a protagonist? She was just a literalwho enemy originally.

Reimu needed to have a funny quirky lovable sidekick so ZUN included Marisa as a player 2 in the first Windows games other than Satsuki Rin. Just like how Mario has a brother and sidekick called Luigi, Reimu should have one as well.

I wonder if ZUN ever answered this question before in one of his interviews

Not to mention she works wonders as a protagonist, being a self-taught human bystander who gets herself into trouble out of curiosity.
