Demon Lord Gele.
(pronunciated Jill, but apparantly "Gele" was spelled officially somewhere)

One of the most evil ruthless Demon Lord ever.
As a human, she was raped, tortured, and all the limbs severed and left for dead.
By the time she became Demon Lord she was already insane.

To prevent the "Hero" from getting too powerful, she took advantage of the Hero system and treated humans as cattles.
She had the Demons make human farms, so the population could be maintained at certain level.

She's the one that turned Gi into a Demon.
Gi defeated her by thrusting Chaos into her heart.
She still didn't die, so Gi sealed her along with Chaos in a separate dimention.

When Rance gained Chaos in III, Gele came back to life.
Rance defeated her (she was weakened, only 1% of her strength was back) then raped her.
He then sealed her again.

But in the thousands of years or so of this going on, Rathowm only manged to get small fraction of souls. He is still largely dwarfed by the original Whale God, and only about 1/600 of his size.

It will take EONS for the well to dry at this rate.

Maoh (Demon Lord) is the lord of the Majin (Demon).
Their purpose is to rule the land, and incite violence.
This keeps the Whale god from getting bored.
So they are not opposition of the Gods.

The Akuma (Devils) spawned from remains of Gods, and their plans is to take over the Gods as rulers of the universe.
They seduce humans to give their soul to them, and collects the souls.

Basically all souls belongs to the Whale god.
But the Devil King, a smaller evil Whale god, wants to take the souls from the world and make himself eventually bigger than the real Whale God, and take over his place.

Hell, run by the Oni, cleanses the soul and "reformats" it to a blank state, and returns it to the Whale.

I played Rance VII and Kichikuou using Atlas just fine. If you can only understand 10% of the story you better get your brains checked.

Also, no need to call Majin or Maoh. Demons and Demon King are fine.

I don't think I could play using an automatic translator. Even if you understand 80%, that's still fully 20% that you don't, and that's just unacceptable. Besides, having to deal with the garbled translation would just ruin any potential focus I could have on the actual in-game event.
I play translations for now, and I started learning Japanese so I'll be able to play whatever I want eventually. It's all good.

I agree with this. While maybe not such a detraction for a light-hearted romp like a Rance game, this totally ruins emotional games like Clannad. The real effectiveness of a dramatic or romantic game comes from your ability to immerse yourself in it and form emotional bonds with the characters. And to me, playing the game in one window while decrypting the babelfish translation in another just completely breaks the immersion.

I don't know about that. Every dialogue has subtleties. Of course you're going to understand the overall story pretty well, but it's just not the same level of understanding.
Maybe it's just me, but I found the stuff that's been posted in these threads (information about the world and setting, not just about the in-game) quite interesting.
I suppose it's different for every person. I know people who play a lot of games (quick playthroughs, just the mandatory stuff), but personally I'm the type to play a game for everything it's worth (working on completing the Rance VII progress report achievements right now), want to know everything about it, and get interested in related info as well.
It's a blessing and a curse.

In that cast you would know that all this info is there. Everything is explained by a lot of side dialogues(how gods work, what majins do, how monsters are reproducing, the cycle of human souls, the history of world - everything is there). It is simple and straightforward IF you actually play through all games and not only partially translated Rance 7.

This was first mentioned in Hanihon vol.3, and then more in detail in Rance Chronicle book.
