Is going from N5 to N4 in a month too fast? Yesterday I completed Genki II and tried a sample JLPT N4 test. It was fairly easy (vocab 30/34, grammar-reading 30/35, listening 28/30). So I am pretty confident that if I took the N4 test right now, I would pass it easily.

However, I finished Genki I and completed a sample N5 test on 7 February, so I have jumped from N5 to N4 in only a month. (This is due to my school's closure due to the pandemic in February, as I had literally nothing else to do.)

I am now worried that although I can remember almost everything now, the rather rushed speed can make me forget a lot in near future. Will that happen, and what should I do to avoid it?

Moreover, which JLPT level should I take this July? I am thinking of applying for the N3 test, but as my school has reopened and I can only spend at most 1-2 hours per day for Japanese, will the next four months suffice, or should I apply for N4 instead? Also as I am a completely self-studying student who has never used tools other than Genki and Anki, which textbooks should I use, if I am to do the N3?

I finished my first anime in entirely Japanese today. The anime is ‘Cardcaptor Sakura’ (70 episodes) I watched it LINE BY LINE and remember that my first episode took a WHOLE DAY to go through. I was also starting the monolingual transition and learning to make my own Anki cards back then which kinda explains why it took so long, but I could barely follow the dialogue or understand the plot by the end of the episode which was discouraging.

I realised it was because I had zero reading experience since I had spent all my time in Anki. So I read NHK Easy and Yotsuba for a week before coming back to CCS, my second attempt took around 5hrs, and this time I could actually follow the plot from analysing every sentence to the best of my ability.

I pretty much added 80-90% of the unknown words I encountered since I realised how limit my vocabulary was despite grinding both Tango N5+N4. By the end of the anime, I added in total around 1000 new Anki cards (Including dictionary words) The average time per episode eventually dropped to 2hrs so I’d watch 2eps/day.
