In mythology, Kitsunes/Kyuubi must have a bamboo reed, leaf, or skull on their heads in order to maintain human form.

Ran has neither of these.

How does Ran maintain her human form, or is Ran Yakumo just proof Zun is shitting all over proper Japanese mythology?

also, Ran and Yukari thread.

It's hidden under her silly hat.

You're thinking far too into this, thus making you a huge douche.

Maybe she doesn't have the same rules because she's Yukari's Shikigami

This actually makes sense. If she takes her hat off, her leaf will blow away.

Ran is a not an independent Kitsune, she's a shikigami.

Also, you can't spell "mythology" without "myth".

Tanuki require the leaf. Whether kitsune do or not seems to vary depending on the legend - I've seen it mentioned on Wikipedia, but none of the actual accounts I've read mention any leaf or skull.

As for Ran, she doesn't seem to cast a fox-shaped shadow either, so it seems her human form is just as "real" as the nine-tailed fox.

It's not like ZUN is the only person ever to shit over mythology. Nasu shat over practically everything, and there's a popular marvel comics character devoted to shitting over Norse Mythology.

She is one of the strongest entities in Gensokyo. Maybe the same rules no longer apply?

Or maybe you could just, not think too much into it. How about that? Fox demon with the body of a Goddess needs no reason.

>Japanese shitting on mythology

They do it all the time with their own religions, it's pretty much an expected thing. And VNs tend to be wacky, which doesn't help.

Then again, the kitsune is a *very* old mythical creature, so it's only natural there are variations on the finer workings of the myth.

In mythology, Nekomata do not wear frilly hats or ribbons.

Chen has both of these.

How does Chen maintain her nekomata form, or is Chen Yakumo just proof Zun is shitting all over proper Japanese mythology?

Old hag reading pornography to young fox.

>> No.3365942

I guess this is as good as any thread to bring this up.

I recall reading once, somewhere, that kitsune who have achieved "nine-tail" status will eventually lose all but four tails and gain a divine status, possibly related to their frequent representation as messengers of Inari. Since I don't recall where I read this, I do not know whether my mind has made this up or if I'm sourcing some form of pop culture as historical mythology. Any thoughts?

The lack of magic needed itself is magic. You ain't got to explain shit.

Read this as well, but still haven't tracked down the source of it.
It seems the tail splitting and eventual divinity, which effectively sets an upper "lifespan" for kitsune, is one of few things Japanese mythology has added to the fox ghost line.
