So I've been reading a translation of Kojiki and I'm on the Emperor Jimmu section. There's a whole paragraph of a song that is just question marks and the footnote says that it's impossible to interpret, even with the help of famed classical scholar Motowori.

I don't understand. Japanese is written with chinese characters, kanji. The benefit of having characters is that the meaning stays the same even when the pronunciation changes. So why is interpreting Kanbun so difficult for native scholars? How could they not know how the jodai tokushu kanazukai are pronounced? How had it not been recorded in some shape or form? Yet in languages like Old English and Old Thai we can perfectly recreate how it sounded and how it was written. What's the difference? Did linguistics just not exist for a few centuries? Were there no minimal pairs?

Is there a good method to consistently learning more japanese? I actually learned enough to pass the n5 exam in a class (though I've forgotten most of the kanji and vocab I learned by now since I'm stupid and didn't keep practicing) but I just can't get into grinding vocab. theres prob just no reliable way of counting the amount of L2 speakers.
i mean with english, you just count the amount of people that get C1/C2 diplomas + foreigners that live in UK/USA (if they live there, they presumably know english).
but with japan, N1 doesnt mean youre fluent, and even people who live in japan dont speak japanese because they just go there to teach english. so you cant reliably count the number of people.
