What's even the point of the jlpt?
It's supposed to be an entry requirement for foreigners who want to work in Japan, yet it doesn't test you on your writing or speaking skills.
So I could have N1 levels of reading and listening comprehension, go to Japan and work as a doctor, but then I can't speak to anyone.
(this actually happens here with doctors and it sucks, I have a doctor who can't speak our language properly and it's hard to communicate with her)

Why is "hell" written as 地獄 (ground prison) rather than 死国 (death country)?

They can both have the exact same reading ( じごく ). In fact, when I first heard it (watching Super Sentai), the latter compound was the first one that came to mind. Is it purely coincidence that both compound kanji can have the same reading and have applicable meaning, or was one compound chosen over the other for a particular reason?
