You have to remember that the mechs were running for 30 years with no maintenance. They can be easily taken down by a single, well armed guy now, but back during the war, when they were actually being repaired and worked on, they were nearly unstoppable.

It says in one of the short stories that he leaves the city with Yumemi's memory card and builds a projector thing with an umbrella and he goes around to different shelters and shows them the stars. He gets old and collapses outside of a nearly-abandoned bunker and gives his final show to some kids before dying, iirc.

I thought we were supposed to imagine the junker as an old, broken down piece of meat, which is why he has no patience or curiosity towards Yumemi at first. He's not a young man who's out for adventure, he just wants booze. He's sick of everyone, robots and other humans included. That's why I thought that Yumemi helped him rediscover his own humanity and gave him something to live for.
