I have noticed that every time people kiss in a Japanese text it simply says キスする. It doesn’t seem like there is an original Japanese term for kiss which makes me curious. Why is that?
Did kissing really not exist in ancient Japan and just happens to be a more modern practice? I know that Japanese are less direct in their display of affection, but for example Shunga exists in the same culture, so why no kissing? Does anybody know more about this?

The variance exists quite independent of me or my study habits. All languages with a written form exhibit this to one extent or another (consider, for example, the English still has no widely-accepted means of encoding sarcasm), but it happens to be much more pronounced in Japanese.

Take つつ example. It is almost never used in spoken language, only written. Does English have any such equivalent?

And this does not even touch the issue of homonymous 漢語 which are perfectly unambiguous in written language but almost impossible to differentiate in spoken.
