Looks a tad bit overexposed to me, probably what makes the lighting look the way it is.

Also I recall taking a similar local train to either Naoshima or Tottori and yeah as long as the ferns aren't overgrown onto the tracks I think the trains aren't bothered at all.

Are clouds like this common in Japan? It's crazy how they form like that and how beautiful it looks to see such a giant. I don't really look outside my own window much, but I'm pretty sure I don't get such kinds of clouds around here often. I've seen other kinds of pictures of these clouds on Twitter too. It seems Japan benefits from having a flat landscape for the clouds to better show? Maybe that's why too. Although Japan isn't flat, but I'm not really sure how else to explain it.

When I was on Google Maps, the closer you get to the cities, the less they look like poor, run-down small towns. It's actually impressive how many run-down towns there are in Japan. It doesn't even look like anyone lives there which how run down it is, but it's definitely populated.

There aren't, thats why the small villages are dying out. The population is either old enough to be retired and lives from pension and their own vegetables or they drive somewhere else to work. There might be a dam, michi no eki, onsen, resort, school etc in the area that has a few employees.
To be fair, with a car you can commute really far within a relativly short amount of time. If you commute for 40 minutes you could live in the mountains and work in a small city nearby.
Seeing run down shopping arcades with 90% of shops closed on a sunny afternoon always left a really bad taste in my mouth.

From my experience these clouds are common in the summer in Japan. They are thunder clouds, but don't seem to carry a lot of activity. Mainly rain. They seem to spring up late afternoon, at random locations, traveling slowly or staying in one spot.
Very different from Europe, where I'm from. Here thunder often develops above France, and travels hundreds of kilometers north into Belgium, Netherlands and Germany

Corona is a double edged sword. I stayed from October 2019 to October 2020 in Japan. At times it was really inconvenient, like public toilets being closed, no events and no festivals. Campsites, mountain huts and hiking trails being closed really annoyed me. But on the other hand I got to experience Japan with almost no other tourists, except those on a long term visa like me.
I visited Kyoto and my experience was 100 times better than the first time I went in 2016. Although I do feel sorry for all the people that live from tourism.

>gun are usually very rare to find in japan anyway
The rarity isn't because they're really hard to find, just google up a gun store and go there, but because most aren't allowed to have them. Hunters however are, so...

>but... why not?
From the hunter's perspective because it's illegal and fucking around with the law in Japan is decidedly not recommended. From the lawmaker's perspective I don't really know, but the laws in my neck of the woods that say you can only hunt with sufficiently powerful rifles (so no .22lr for moose) are based on animal welfare. Sure bow and arrow can kill, but rifles are easier to use and so less risk of you fucking up, or so is the theory at least.

As an American, I wish our cities were more like Japanese ones. Having lived my life in what some might consider suburban Midwestern hell, with a population of under 27,000 its not too bad, but incredibly boring. Cities here are dangerous, dirty, etc. I wish my town and "actual" cities such as Cleveland or Akron, or Toledo were walkable. Having never left the USA, everything I'm seeing in these pictures and that I've seen elsewhere fills me with excitement, perhaps even jealousy. From the nice walkable cities with local neighborhood grocery stores, gorgeous nature in harmony with modernity and more. Even their religion(s) seem far more interesting or meaningful than Christianity/monotheism. I especially value the spiritual rituals and their place in common everyday life instead of just treating religion as some kind of genie that you only take out of the bottle when you need it.. Would love to visit there some day, and hopefully multiple times. Only problem is, I can't understand any Japanese and that would make me even more subconscious about myself. I'd feel terrible for visiting a country without at least taking the time to learn the basics of their native language. Sorry for the blogpost. Great thread.

I'm not an american and or japanese but I got a question what exactly is the different between Japan and America? What kind of things do you want the US to look more like japan in general?

>> No.33738652

>>33738268
America is a very divided nation, and while sometimes it is overblown by the media, many times it definitely feels like the people live in completely different societies from one another, the people living in different parts of the country could be their own countries even though they share a language and food. This is partially due to how large America is, which we can see historically that large countries are harder to govern. Also, America is very racially and ethnically diverse. It wasn't long ago that it was racially homogenious, not to the same level as Japan, but still very stable. Large, diverse multi-racial or multi-ethnic societies are not stable and viable long-term, the Soviet Union, Russian Empire, Austria-Hungary, and Yugoslavia being good examples. While Japan is nearly entirely Japanese, and has a much more collectivist culture that emphasizes societal harmony and occasional self-sacrifice or selflessness. This feeling of community is something everyone seeks, and at least from afar, Japan seems to have it spades. I also really enjoy Japanese aesthetics, from traditional rustic buildings, modern cities, pottery, etc. The rituals, practices, beliefs/deities, and culture associated with Shinto also greatly interest me. While I'm not a big fan of cramped cities here in America, Japan's cities seem very interesting. The walkability would make life far more convenient, and ironically maybe even help fight the epidemic of obesity in this country. I also really enjoy the philosophy, aesthetics, of Japanese tea culture. Japanese tea is delicious, and much better than the shit we drink here. But I realize that Japan isn't some perfect society, it has plenty of problems we have as well, but worse. I don't wish to be Japanese but I enjoy their society and culture, including exports such as anime, manga, and tea at the surface level.

very interestung post last question if you were a president of united state what kind of problem would you fix and how would you try to change US into more "japanese"?

Presidents and individuals cannot solve the issues alone, especially cultural issues which will take decades to change. If I were president I work to make suburbs and cities as walkable as Japanese cities, change zoning laws to allow for shops and grocery stores to be built in residential neighborhoods with proper implementation. I also greatly envy Japanese public transportation via their Shinkansen. Having a high-speed rail system is current way too expensive, but I would love to commute to my job from the suburbs to the city without having to waste a quarter of a tank of gas each day. I drive 60 miles 1 way twice a day. I would build high speed rail train transit in every state in America, especially in the Midwest. I'd make it state-subsidized so it was cheaper. I'd also make immigration laws stricter and work to deport more illegal immigrants, of course without making a big deal of it like Trump did, which is why he was so heavily opposed.

They closed, sadly, but it was a super nice place to be. Free breakfast, free bikes, computer and arcade and tabletop games, and super chill staff if you're not a goddamn retard like I was. One of the girls would read your Tarot for 500¥.

In my country someone who can afford to live in old house/shop like this in the middle of the city between big apartments are always filthy rich (or at least used to be one). I wonder whether this is also the case in Japan?
