What planet do we see at the end of Ciconia?

>> No.33437044

It's probably just a stylistic choice or something. The moon being red fits in with the general apocalyptic Revelation theme it has going on.
>And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
>And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

Ange pretended to run the orphanage well in her later years but the truth was the Ushiromiya blood was too strong and she treated the kids like furniture as Grandpa Kinzo would have wanted.
The children were terrified of the lethal beatings she gave out. Some say every so often she started calling herself ‘Aunt Rosa’ on some nights. It was at these that she was most violent.
Only a few kids could escape her by reaching parts of the orphanage that she was too obese to get to.

No, she lives alone until old age, denying the truth (rejecting the knowledge of truth she got from Eva's diary because it's painful to her). That's what accepting ''magic'' means, that's ''keeping the catbox untouched''.

I would prefer the ''bad'' ending be: Ange decides to stay together with her family on Rokkenjima and dying with them, after Battler takes her there. Then they all reach the goldan land together. It would be ambiguous if, in reality, she commited suicide jumping off the skyscraper or if we are seeing a fragment where Ange didn't get sick and actually went with them to the island in 1986, something like that.

The good ending would be her accepting the love of her family, dysfunctional as they were, AND accepting the painful, harsh truth. I don't know the details, but that had to be the foundation.

'Without love it cannon be seen' should not be equivalent to 'without cope it cannot be seen'.

A very cute and wholesome post.

But... I thought about it too much and couldn't enjoy it. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to fall into this trap, but I'd be deathly worried of her getting pregnant at so young age. I don't want Satoko to suffer any more trauma, mental or physical. For one, the baby would be underweight because this Satoko is so small. What if there's a stillbirth? Or some other complications that would make her feel inadequate as a mother? The childbirth would also be really hard and dangerous for her.
I'll gladly become Satoko's doting husband and let her practice babymaking any time she wants, but the condoms must stay intact for a couple of years, until her body grows strong and big enough for safe childbirth!

I know it's a meme at this point but you're unironically viewing the entire situation without love. You're taking Ange's happy life in the end where she has overcome her earlier trauma of her entire family being horrifically murdered, along with her painful relationship with Eva and her loneliness and changed her life around. Rather than being the gloomy child soldier doggedly pursuing the one true truth of Rokkenjima who would have turned into a cold logical killer as we see in the Trick ending, she has settled down into her dream job and occupation of being a writer for children's stories and started up the Fukuin House orphanage again, and helps Tohya find peace with his own internal conflict over the personality of Battler. In the end she's surrounded by people she loves and is doing what she enjoys while being an undeniably happy and content person, and you've discarded all of this to proclaim that she's actually just a lonely old woman.
>The good ending would be her accepting the love of her family, dysfunctional as they were, AND accepting the painful, harsh truth.
She does accept the painful harsh truth that her family are dead and they're never ever coming back, but that doesn't mean she's descended completely into escapist fantasises. In fact she explicitly rejects these escapist fantasies because magical illusions aren't enough to cope and deal with grief. The point of the magic ending was that while Ange accepts the truth, truth in and of itself isn't some axiomatically good thing that we should all value above all else, otherwise we turn into cold and calculating intellectual rapists like Erika. Ange doesn't need to know the exact truth of Rokkenjima, she doesn't need to know that her family on that day were horrific monsters who all killed each other over money and she can hold onto that hope that her family were better people than they were during Rokkenjima Massacre. We see the alternate timelines where Ange does learn the truth, and she ends up throwing herself off the building rather than living a happy and fulfilling life. In this case, what use is Ange learning about the exact details of the murder and letting it dictate her entire life to the point of suicide?

You're right about that being the "ideal" outcome for Ange, but I think resolving the dichotomy that was misses the point of the magic v truth dichotomy: Often people can't form that kind of synthesis. I understand your point of view here, anon, but I can't bring myself to agree. Ange's piece of mind and happiness is built on the foundation of ignoring reality to a certain degree, that much is clear, and I can't support that. I'm not saying that truth alone is everything that matters, but any healthy decision starts with acknowledging the truth and doing the best with it. Would a real person really be able to lead a happy life like that, or at some point your brain would reject the false reality you created for yourself? You can't lie to yourself forever, at some point reality takes its price. There is an interesting parallel with Maria here. She used her magic to escape reality and reject the idea that her mother was leaving her alone to go on vacation with men, even when evidence started pilling up. At some point Maria would grow up and be unable to reject the obvious truth and she would snap. That is not healthy. Escapism is never healthy. That's why I can't accept that Ange had a happy life on a foundation of escapism (and that's my biggest problem with Umineko as a whole).

I meant to say that is unrealistic to portray Ange as having lived an emotionally stable, happy and fulfilling life on the foundation of self-delusion and escapism. Real life is not like that, and this is a terrible message to portray. Ange was suicidal because she believed her current situation, being lonely, was immutable. I think a more positive message would be to have her understand that she was loved by her family (and maybe one day would meet them again in the golden land, aka the after life) and she could still live a happy life being loved by other people. Amakusa could be made into a foundation for that (but Ryukishi chose to leave their relationship open ended at the end).

>any healthy decision starts with acknowledging the truth and doing the best with it.
I completely agree, but this is what Ange does. At the start she puts up a front and says she'll accept the truth no matter what, but inside Ange still believes that there is some way for her family to come back. The ending is Ange accepting the truth that her family is dead and buried and is her moving on with her life, not letting the events of Rokkenjima dictate her future. The message isn't that Ange should lie to herself forever and that self-delusion is okay, the message is that Ange doesn't need to know the cold hard logical truth of the matter because it has no value or purpose. Ange needs to accept the truth that the Rokkenjima Massacre was the death of her family because it's a defining point of her life and she can't move away from it until she accepts it, but she doesn't need to know the exact specifics of how her family died because all it would do is hurt her.
What's the point of a truth without purpose? If a purposeless truth exists and learning it would do nothing but harm me or drive me to suicide then is that truth really worth knowing?

>At some point Maria would grow up and be unable to reject the obvious truth and she would snap. That is not healthy. Escapism is never healthy.
Agreed, the point of Maria is that her escapism is just childish fantasy of illusions, it's not Maria taking a stance rooted in reality which is why her Mariage Sorciere crumbles to bits as soon as somebody refuses to recognise magic. Maria's fantasy is not shown to be a good way of dealing with grief. Her coping mechanism can be immediately invalidated by other people, she's escaping into a pure fantasy. Ange's approach in the end is the one that works best, or at least R07 believes it is. A "healthy amount" of escapism you could say. She moves on, becomes a better person, acknowledges reality, but still has hope that her family were good people in spite of everything.

>That's why I can't accept that Ange had a happy life on a foundation of escapism (and that's my biggest problem with Umineko as a whole).
Ange's happy life isn't built on the foundation of escapism, it's a mix of accepting the truth and being grounded in reality but living on with hope in her heart and not letting horrific events define her. Umineko is a story in which broken people deal with shit events dealt to them in life in various ways, with a healthy amount of escapism being portrayed as a totally okay thing. In the same way a family member visiting a grave and laying flowers and speaking at their grave is a way of escapism, you can choose to view it without love in the most cold and logical way and say it's just them speaking to a stone that can't hear them or something, but a person with love could view it as a form of closure that brings you comfort and happiness. Just like Ange moving on and deciding not to open the catbox of October 6th 1986 is a form of closure for her.

Yeah but Ange only acknowledges parts of reality, while denying the worst parts. She acknowledges that her family is not coming back so she can have closure, but she tries to ''un-learn'' the truth about her family being extremely dysfunctional and fighting (and maybe even killing each other) for money (we don't know what is written in Eva's diary after all, but Ange does). How does that work? How is that anything other than self-delusion? I don't think this ''healthy amount of escapism'' exists and can sustain itself indefinitely. I also don't like the idea of equating self-delusion with faith. Having faith is believing in an unknown possibility (like the idea that her family is waiting for her in an after life), while self-delusion is intentionally making yourself believe in something you know for a fact to be false (like trying to un-learn the truth she discovered in Eva's diary).

I don't think my views on this lack love, and I'm all for an ending that involved Ange developing faith in good things in a healthy way, but as I said, faith and self-delusion are different things.

We don't know if Ange actually read the diary or not. Due to all the various levels of meta realities going on we see events like Ange opening the diary and reading it and not being able to cope, and then killing herself, but we obviously know that in Episode 8 Ange hasn't read the diary and has kept the catbox closed specifically because she decides not to kill herself and she doesn't turn around in the end. Her seeing what's inside the diary is just meant to show us that Ange genuinely cannot handle the truth, while also giving the readers an answer to what actually happened.

The whole thing is Ange choosing not to become a 'child soldier' and pursue the whole truth of everything, but instead decide to move on. Not like, Ange's adventures of self-delusion where she forgets things she knows to be a fact.

I believe she had access to the diary but makes the decision not to read it. I might be misremembering it, thou. I understand the parallel Ryukishi is trying to make here with Erika, and the speech of Amakusa about child soldiers that ties it all together, but that's just how the author decided to frame things. We're not obligated to agree and accept his own personal views and ideas. In fact, this is what bothers me, that this ended up being the overarching message of the story, portrayed in a positive light by the author's framing.

What if Erika was right and her boyfriend WAS cheating on her? If he really had that much evidence, it's a possibility. Is Ryukishi implying that the correct thing for her to do was to ignore it and live in self-delusion, like Maria does with Rosa? I'm gonna give R07 the benefit of the doubt here and interpret this as the two extremes we should reject and avoid: on one hard Erika and her cynicism and paranoia, on the other, Maria with her coping mechanism of self-delusion.

She makes the decision not to read it, but it's in the context of the meta-world. The only real world scene we see of Eva's diary is when Ikuko decides not to reveal the truth of the diary to all of the journalists. I don't think Ange ever actually had possession of the diary and explicitly read it, it was all just weird meta metaphors for Ange's potential journeys and what ifs.
>We're not obligated to agree and accept his own personal views and ideas. In fact, this is what bothers me, that this ended up being the overarching message of the story, portrayed in a positive light by the author's framing.
You're not obligated to agree with the overarching message and having the opinion that escapism is just inherently bad is a totally okay thing. I just disagree with your initial framing of Ange's life where to paint her as like a lonely old woman who has resorted into escapism when she's pretty clearly happy, and escapism is shown in a pretty nuanced light as opposed to like a purely bad or good light. It's not like a pro-escapism thing, it's a if you think the truth will literally kill you then maybe the truth isn't so valuable thing.

>on one hard Erika and her cynicism and paranoia, on the other, Maria with her coping mechanism of self-delusion.
That's basically my take from it as well, Maria's coping isn't presented as a healthy thing that should be emulated - and while Erika's boyfriend probably did cheat on her, Erika's antics of crushing little girls' magic dreams so she can jerk herself off isn't exactly the best approach either.

My point was less that Ange was actually a sad, old woman and more that her being happy and fulfilled didn't feel believable to me, taking everything into consideration.

>She makes the decision not to read it, but it's in the context of the meta-world.
I don't know what's reality and what's meta-reality for sure in this case, but I'm pretty sure that makes no difference in regard to Ryukishi portraying Ange's decision to ignoring the truth to keep ''the catbox sealed'' as a positive thing, be it literal or meta.

I think R07 made a perfect parallel of the two bad extremes with Erika and Maria, and he could have made Ange to be the sensible one as someone who rejects both extremes and chooses a healthy path instead. In my opinion that's not exactly what happens in the end because Ange's philosophy ended up a bit too close to Maria's, and the author's framing felt a bit off to me. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on some points, anon. I understand your perspective, and I don't think it's absurd or anything, it's just slightly different from mine.

Why? Ange chooses to accept that the murders happened and live on believing that her family were still good people. It's a coping mechanism for grief, but since Rokkenjima is a catbox that can't be opened and she isn't deluding herself into believing that her family will actually come back she can move on and not let Rokkenjima define her. It's like a mother not prying into the particular details of how their child was brutally murdered or something, it's a horrible event and they'll always be sad about it. But I don't think they need to know the gruesome details about how their child was tortured to death in particular to live a happy life later on. Because truth is not a good end in itself.
>he could have made Ange to be the sensible one as someone who rejects both extremes and chooses a healthy path instead
That's what R07 was trying to get across, the VN just doesn't handle it as well as it could have. But like, Ange rejecting Maria's way of living and Maria's fragile reality being shattered definitely isn't meant to be something Ange emulates as a good thing.

Well, refusing to look into the catbox to discover the truth (if that's something that is actually possible for 1998 Ange) is not the same as avoiding the gruesome details of a tragedy. Knowing if your parents are murderers and responsible for the trauma that defined your life up until that point is pretty relevant, right? Ange is not obligated to learn every detail (like how they killed every family member), but she can't run from the truth and expect to live with no consequences, that's not how the human mind works. A real person would not be able to hold that forever. Imagine waking up every day in doubt about your parents being decent people or cold-blooded murderers? imagine not being able to suppress the desire that someone might've survived? and then imagine that those answers are right there in front of you, you just have to look.

>Knowing if your parents are murderers and responsible for the trauma that defined your life up until that point is pretty relevant, right?
Not really, because again Ange learning about the tragedy won't fix anything. All it does is kill her. The only way her life substantially changes if she pursues the truth is that she kills herself.

>A real person would not be able to hold that forever
I don't want to sound rude, but I think you're projecting yourself onto humans at large. People not pursuing the truth out of fear of what they'll find is something that happens all the time. I imagine if we somehow objectively proved that God doesn't exist, there would be a large group of religious people who wouldn't go out of their way to uncover it because being religious brings them more joy and happiness than not being religious. Or for a more grounded analogy that's relevant to Rokkenjima, family overlooking the crimes of family. If people are willing to go this far, Ange deciding not to look into the specifics of what happened on Rokkenjima and just moving on from horrific past events rather than being caught up in it really isn't that unrealistic.

>>33444805
When Ange speaks of keeping them alive it's in a metaphorical sense of keeping them "alive in her heart". She totally accepts that her family is dead in reality, but as long as she lives her family is "alive" in her heart. Sappy stuff, but you get the point. She's not out here searching for Jooji in the all-you-can-eat buffet she frequents.

The fact that Ange chooses to look away is not unrealistic in itself, that's very human, like you said. But framing that decision as wise and correct, and having no negative repercussions, that's what I can't stomach. She can't do anything to change the past, but she can get closure and move forward with her life. It could even help her completely recontextualize her relationship with Eva. You're treating the truth as some sort of lovecraftian revelation. Knowledge of the truth won't automatically kill Ange, if she changed her perspective a little bit, she would be able to handle the truth and make something positive out of that. Instead, she chooses to ignore the truth and live on the basis of a comfortable illusion.

Well, of course not, but I wouldn't keep the truth from them either. The parents have the right to know the truth, it's not up to me to decide for them. All I can do is to try having tact and empathy, starting with some way of telling them that their daughter was violently killed (which is unavoidable anyway).

Think about the exact opposite situation: when a family member goes missing (specially little kids) and the parents are in deep despair. After months of agony, most of them will tell you they want to know the truth, even if their kid is dead, so they can have a funeral and get some closure. The proactive step I was refering to had nothing to do with accepting everyone is dead and won't come back, is about refusing to have knowledge of the who dunnit because it will necessarily sully the imagine of someone she loves. They can't ALL be innocent (and if Ange believed otherwise she would have no fear of knowing the truth). At first she wanted Eva to be the culprit, but when she progressed on her character development and started pitying Eva, she unconsciously wanted for them all to be innocent. You keep bringing up that it's not believable before just skipping over the believable real life examples where Ange's situation is applicable and people go on to live generally happy lives, same with the moral message. How is "root yourself in reality but don't pursue truth so much that it kills you" not a pretty good moral message?

>is about refusing to have knowledge of the who dunnit because it will necessarily sully the imagine of someone she loves
Refusing to actively pursue knowledge isn't a proactive step, it's literally the opposite of a proactive step because Ange isn't going out of her way to find the knowledge. Ange is continuing on with her life in a normal manner and has accepted reality and lives a happy life for it.

>refusing to know the truth to keep alive the fantasy that they are all innocent IS self-delusion
It's her not pursuing a truth that has no value to her that will only objectively harm her and drive her to suicide. She doesn't need to know what happened because truth isn't valuable in itself. Who cares who murdered who on Rokkenjima? It's a closed catbox, everyone who was on Rokkenjima is dead, nobody needs to answer for anything because the culprit is dead, all the victims are dead. All that's left of the Ushiromiya family is Ange, and Ange has the opportunity to tear her life apart pursuing some useless truth that will kill her, or move on with her life and let the catbox remain closed.

Her proactive step doesn't have to be physical, it's in fact intellectual, the effort she makes to delude herself into the (impossible) fantasy that everyone is innocent as long as she doesn't open the box.

>How is "root yourself in reality but don't pursue truth so much that it kills you" not a pretty good moral message?
it's more like ''root yourself in reality unless that reality might be tough to swallow. In that case skip over the inconvenient, yet highly relevant, questions''. The real, positive transformation for Ange's character would be a change of mindset so she could handle the truth, not to choose ignorance and self-delusion. Just accepting that you're emotionally weak and should give up is the most anti-human spirit message you can possibly get across.

Highly relevant to what? It doesn't matter. Have you ever read about actual cases where people have lost their entire families in a sudden tragedy? The human mind isn't invincible, you're not "emotionally weak" if you can't handle something that horrible. The only way to get past something like that is to get past it, not to dwell on it.

>it's in fact intellectual, the effort she makes to delude herself into the (impossible) fantasy that everyone is innocent as long as she doesn't open the box.
That's not what it is, she's not making a proactive step intellectually at all anymore than you're making a proactive step intellectually to not know Quantum Physics. She just doesn't know. The catbox is an unanswerable question because Ange doesn't know what happened, therefore the possibility that everyone is innocent and that the Rokkenjima Massacre was just an unfortunate accident relating to the explosives kept underneath Rokkenjima is an entirely possible thing. Ange doesn't need to know what happened on Rokkenjima.

>root yourself in reality unless that reality might be tough to swallow. In that case skip over the inconvenient, yet highly relevant, questions
It's not merely tough to swallow, it's an earth-shattering revelation that would emotionally torture Ange for the rest of her life and drive her to suicide. Which is why she's better off not knowing it and leaving it in the catbox.
>Just accepting that you're emotionally weak and should give up
It's a message emotionally damaged people about coping with grief, you have to acknowledge that human beings have emotions and the best way for them to cope with the events is to just move on. Don't let the horrific massacre define you, move on to other ventures. There is literally no reason why Ange should know the truth at all. Ange isn't emotionally weak for not wanting to know the truth, she's human. She accepts that it happened and moves on. Knowing the particulars isn't relevant.

>That's not what it is, she's not making a proactive step intellectually at all anymore than you're making a proactive step intellectually to not know Quantum Physics.
Maybe proactive step isn't the right term for it. Let me put it another way: she was searching for the truth, had the answers right in front of her and decided not to know because she wanted to keep alive the illusion that everyone was innocent. At the very least it was a decision she made. She clearly didn't believe the cause of the incident was just some accident, otherwise she would have no reason to avoid reading the diary.

>It's not merely tough to swallow, it's an earth-shattering revelation that would emotionally torture Ange for the rest of her life and drive her to suicide. Which is why she's better off not knowing it and leaving it in the catbox.
I see your point, but then don't say the moral of the story is to ''root yourself in reality''. You can't have it both ways. And selective choosing what information you want to know is hardly ''rooting yourself in reality''.

>It's a message emotionally damaged people about coping with grief, you have to acknowledge that human beings have emotions and the best way for them to cope with the events is to just move on. I think you're downplaying the truth as unnecessary ''details'' or ''particulars''. Those ''details'' were so important to Ange that meta-Ange got completely mind-broken when Bern revealed them to her. I can understand your point about Ange not being able to handle the truth, I get it. I just don't like that in the end, after all the journey she went through, Ange didn't grow strong enough to handle it and be happy on a better foundation, a foundation of truth.

>she was searching for the truth
No, she was searching for what she wanted which was for Eva to be the culprit. She deemed this to be 'the truth' but in reality Ange does not actually want the truth.
>and decided not to know because she wanted to keep alive the illusion that everyone was innocent
She decided to keep the catbox closed, because opening the catbox leads to an unhappy ending where she kills herself.
>She clearly didn't believe the cause of the incident was just some accident, otherwise she would have no reason to avoid reading the diary
She avoids reading the diary because it keeps the catbox closed. She doesn't know who is behind it, and she wants to keep it that way in the endless sea possibilities.

>don't say the moral of the story is to ''root yourself in reality"
It is, Ange explicitly rejects Maria's way of coping because it's fake and not rooted in reality. Remember our entire conversation about Maria's coping mechanism being portrayed as a bad thing earlier? Umineko embraces being rooted in reality.
>And selective choosing what information you want to know is hardly ''rooting yourself in reality''.
Yes, it is. Ange goes from deluding herself into thinking her family will come back one day to acknowledging that her family is dead and living on in spite of it. She chooses not to open the catbox because there's no point in doing it, this doesn't mean she isn't rooted in reality in the same way that a parent doesn't have to watch video recordings of their child being brutally tortured to death for them to be rooted in reality.

>Those ''details'' were so important to Ange that meta-Ange got completely mind-broken when Bern revealed them to her
Yes, and literally kills herself over them. Which is why Ange probably shouldn't know the truth here. They're not relevant to her living a happy life. They ACTIVELY make her life worse.
>didn't grow strong enough to handle it and be happy on a better foundation, a foundation of truth.
I feel like I've said this a thousand times - Ange DOES grow strong and does grow happy on a foundation of truth. At the beginning she is deluding herself into thinking that her family will come back and pursuing the "truth" because she doesn't really care if she lives or dies and just wants to blame it all on Eva. By the end, Ange has accepted that her family have died, chosen not to open the catbox, and has moved on from everything while believing in her family's love for her in her heart.

Ange is a happier and better person overall by the end, and this is rooted on a foundation of truth because she accepts the death of her family and the fact that they're not returning. Her happiness is all that matters here, in the same way that a parent moving on from the death of their child is all they need. They don't need to know whether or not their child was horrifically tortured and suffered before they died. Ange is a much stronger person by the end.

I feel like we are repeating the same arguments over and over, from both sides.
Consciously choosing to ignore reality (who dunnit) is not ''rooting yourself in reality'', it's the exact opposite to that. You keep using the example of parents that lost their child in a gruesome, violent way not needing to see video evidence of the act, but a more appropriate parallel would be for them refusing to know who did this to him because it was, necessarily, someone from their family and they want to keep a happy memory of the whole family. I don't know why you keep bringing the fact that Ange acknowledges the fact that no one is coming back when I never contested this to begin with. That's not the problem. For all the growth Ange goes through, it wasn't enough to handle the complete truth, some level of self-delusion and escapism was necessary for her, and I hate that Ryukishi wrote things this way. If you look at things carefully, Ange is doing the exact same thing that Maria did, but now there is no one alive to break her illusion. As long as she keeps it to herself, it will never be challenged.

Anon, let's wrap this up, let's just agree to disagree. We have fundamentally different views on what constitutes a healthy, sustainable, moral message regarding the end of Umineko.

There are some things that many people just can't handle, in the same way that a person can never become physically strong enough to have their bones resist an industrial hydraulic press. Having your family annihilated can be one of those things, there are ample real world examples to fall back on.

>but a more appropriate parallel would be for them refusing to know who did this to him because it was, necessarily, someone from their family and they want to keep a happy memory of the whole family
Well, it wasn't necessarily someone from their family in Ange's case. Because it's a catbox and the entire point of a catbox is that it's an infinite sea of possibilities where anything can happen and Ange doesn't know the details of what happened. You keep trying to narrow down the possibilities of the catbox, which ignores its entire purpose
>I don't know why you keep bringing the fact that Ange acknowledges the fact that no one is coming back when I never contested this to begin with.
Because you keep saying Ange is running away from truth and that implying that she's just falling into escapist fantasies and ignoring reality, when her entire journey is literally the exact opposite of this with her acknowledging reality, the acknowledgment of which allows her to live happily. She doesn't delve into the details of how her family was obliterated, but this particular truth is not relevant. She doesn't need it to be happy, she needs to move on to be happy.
>For all the growth Ange goes through, it wasn't enough to handle the complete truth, some level of self-delusion and escapism was necessary for her
I mean you yourself said earlier that some level of escapism isn't harmful. In a situation like Rokkenjima where there was a horrific event that occurred over a decade ago that tortures Ange to the brink of suicide and the choice is between her living a happy and fulfilling life at the expense of not axiomatically valuing truth and her killing herself at the age of 18 because of horrific events. The first one is better, inarguably.
>you look at things carefully, Ange is doing the exact same thing that Maria did
She's obviously not, Ange speaks about finding the comfortable middle ground between Maria's fantastical escapism and Erika's hard logic and speaks about both as being a bad thing.
>but now there is no one alive to break her illusion. As long as she keeps it to herself, it will never be challenged.
No, this is literally what happens in Episode 8. When Maria's magic is challenged by Ange it breaks apart because at the end of the day it's pure fantasy. When Ange's magic is challenged by Bernkastel, it doesn't. What do you think the point of this was? Why do you think Ange speaks about turning her back on cruel reality and living in purely illusion as being a bad thing?

>let's just agree to disagree. We have fundamentally different views on what constitutes a healthy, sustainable, moral message regarding the end of Umineko
Sure, I really suggest reading the Umineko manga if you haven't already, it clears up the message R07 was trying to tell. It wasn't "escapism and self-delusion is good and there are no downsides to it" because that'd be a kind of fuckin retarded message because nobody unironically believes that.

Ange has the mindset you speak of for basically all of Umineko, and it only serves to make her miserable and suicidal.
It goes back to Amakusa rambling about how Ange is a child soldier, pursuing who did that to her family and trying to get revenge is pointless for her life. All it does is set her on a bad spiral.
The best possible result for Ange is moving on, because when she keeps thinking about it and trying to find the truth she's consumed by despair.
Her "magic" that she learns to get over it are coping mechanisms and by having them she can lead a somewhat fulfilling existence writing children stories and trying to spread happiness.
She's way better off learning to let go than clinging desperately to it.

There is a possibility that no one was the culprit and it was all an accident, but Ange clearly doesn't believe that to be true, otherwise there would be no reason to avoid the truth.
Ange acknowledges reality only partially.
I didn't say some level of escapism wasn't harmful, I said in most cases it isn't life-destroying. What I mean was that: the greater the pain you're trying to bury, the more harmful the escapism tend to be. In Ange's case, it's huge.
Selective self-delusion (escapism) can technically be a ''middle ground'' between Erika and Maria, but I never advocated for that. I wanted Ange to reject both of their ideologies. To acknowledge the truth but reach closure and move on with her life. Erika chased the truth but she never got to achieve closure and never moved on, that where they would be very different.
Bernkastel's red truths were never denied, all that changed was Ange's perceptions of said truth.

I intend to read the manga at some point, I keep reading that it's much better at getting the message across, like you just said. All that I've said so far has been about the VN exclusively. I'l l take all that you've said into consideration as I read it. I'll try to keep an open mind and analyze things from scratch. Maybe I'll change my mind. That's completely wrong, you just have to meet more people to realize it.

Humans are extremely good at ignoring things, we can live without thinking about our inevitable future death all the time.

Ignoring problems that you can't do anything about is honestly the way of happiness, or at least, if someone can't do it then he'll just never be happy, the more you are able to do it and the more happiness you'll get.

Either way she's going to learn some very hurtful truths. Poor Satoko.

The longer this goes on, the more I am convinced Gou can't end in ep24. That''d mean they only have about 60 minutes of usable screentime left.
Assuming episode 22 focuses on Takano's change, elaborates the working relationship of Satoko and !Featherine, shows Satoko finding out the truth about Satoshi + more background events and even shoves in another loop that goes all the way to 1984... Even if that's enough to establish characters' motivations and the backstory, that leaves only 2 episodes to answer up to 17 episodes of damashi arcs AND conclude everything.

Satoshi being in the hospital may cause her to further mistrust some people (in the aspect that she hasn't been told that despite them knowing). If this snowballs this is gonna be pretty much everyone for her.

No, Satoko is almost certainly going to blame Rika for keeping Satoshi a secret. I won't speculate what this means for Satoko's trust of Irie.
But a development where Satoko falsely believes that everyone knew? That seems very unlikely to me.

We don't know what strings !Featherine pulled to get Satoko to 'entertain' her, but it's more than this.
